It never fails. You get your starting quarterback and start focusing on other areas when BAM - back-up quarterbacks start to fly off the shelves before you are ready. Chances are that you really only need the guy for a bye week replacement, so you start feverishly start looking at matchups that week. Let me help. Consider the top 12 quarterbacks according to the Average Draft. Let's run through them to see who you should consider for your QB2. Obviously if a top 12 QB still exists, you might want him more than just some guy to cover one week for you. But if bye week coverage is most important...

If you drafted... Bye Best Very Good Good Okay

There are always other considerations aside from mere bye week replacements. Michael Vick has a number of nice spots to be used but can you rely on him being healthy later in the season? Or still the starter? Week nine has three starting quarterbacks taking their bye so don't wait too long to get a back-up. Taking a back-up can also consider other factors like Matt Ryan who will be in Seattle in week 16 when hopefully you are in your championship.

For those late season byes - Brady, Romo and Wilson in particular - realize that a lot can happen in the first two and a half months of the season. Expecting to nail a bye week optimally in the summer is tough since you cannot know the situations that will exist that deeply into the season. The bottom line - the earlier the bye, the more you need to be proactive in getting a suitable replacement for that week. You should always look to upgrade your roster every week anyway so you may be on your third back-up quarterback by the time Russell Wilson takes off in week 12.

The names above should be the first 12 taken in nearly every draft and as such any of them are likely a better QB2 option for you if they are still on the board. After all, quarterbacks do get injured and at least one or two will miss significant time. Best to own a replacement for every week instead of just one.

For those of you who like to make your own call, the table below shows the NFL schedule for all teams and below each weekly opponent is the point advantage the matchup yielded as of last season. Point advantage is derived by considering the average points allowed to a quarterback as zero points and then showing the number of points away from the average each matchup was. Hands down - the Saints were wonderful to quarterbacks last year. Playing in Seattle? Not much fun.

And remember - the quality of the quarterback is more important than the quality of the opponent.
