Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins is running with the first team in OTAs.
Huddle Up: The role of Andre Johnson's wingman is wide open, and the Texans spent a first-round pick on Hopkins so it doesn't take too much brainpower to put two and two together here.

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said he could use WR Robert Woods both outside and in the slot position in his rookie season.
Huddle Up: Woods has the savvy to play all the receiver positions, the shiftiness to create problems out of the slot, and enough size to have success on the outside. If Woods is flexible it frees up Steve Johnson and Da'Rick Rodgers to focus on specific roles--more important for the rookie Rodgers as he makes the jump to the NFL. Either way, sounds like Woods will be on the field plenty and is a solid candidate to be the Bills' top pass-catching option after Johnson.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano cleared things up by saying that QB Josh Freeman is the team's starting quarterback Monday, May 20. Schiano had said previously that QB Mike Glennon could "play quickly" if necessary.
Huddle Up: It's no secret Freeman is on a short leash this year as the Bucs opted not to extend his contract. If he plays well he'll be a wealthy man following the season; if he struggles, Glennon is waiting in the wings. Given the considerable talent around him, Freeman should be able to answer the bell--and be a solid fantasy bargain in the process.

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley did not rule out the possibility of QB EJ Manuel being the starting quarterback this season. Whaley said the team likes Manuel's work ethic and leadership abilities but that he will have to compete for the job.
Huddle Up: The Bills didn't spend a first-round pick on Manuel for him to hold a clipboard, and the competition consists of Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson; in other words, Manuel has a pretty good shot at opening the season as the starter in Buffalo.

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said WR Ace Sanders may not participate in offseason workouts until next month because he is dealing with abdomen and hip injuries.
Huddle Up: With Jacksonville's receiving corps wide open after Cecil Shorts, it's a blow to Sanders' chances to contribute immediately if he misses out on these opportunities to pick up the offense.

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert lined up at tight end on both ends of the offensive line as well as a slot receiver during the team's rookie minicamp. Eifert said he believes he is picking up the offense relatively quick.
Huddle Up: Eifert is expected to be the "move" tight end in Cincinnati, with Jermaine Gresham relatively stationary as the "in-line" tight end. They'll still split looks, but Eifert could cut into slot receiver targets as well which would give him a leg up as a fantasy entity.

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy said he is not worried about his surgically repaired toe and does not believe it will be a problem. "It's nothing that I'm thinking about. I'm pretty sure I won't have any problems with it. It's holding up good. The surgery was basically perfect, and now it's about getting back to doing what I know how to do best," Lacy said. Lacy added that he believes he will fit in the offense well this season. "I feel that I can fit into the offense perfectly. They won't have to change anything. I'll be able to go in there and adapt to it. It'll keep defenses guessing," Lacy said.
Huddle Up: Lacy will compete with Jonathan Franklin in what could be a potentially lucrative fantasy role as the primary back in Green Bay. If he's able to stay on the field--both health-wise and from a scheme-fit perspective--Lacy could be a solid fantasy contributor.

The New York Jets are "smitten" with rookie QB Geno Smith, and it's beginning to look more likely that the starting job is his to lose.
Huddle Up: The Jets aren't exactly stacked at quarterback, so for their second-round selection to make a push for the starting job shouldn't be unexpected. Adjust your fantasy rankings of Smith and Mark Sanchez accordingly, assuming your board goes that deep.

Posted: 5/13/2013 11:19am et
Oakland Raiders QB Tyler Wilson is "miles ahead" of where recent Raiders quarterbacks arrived as draft picks. He could possibly climb to No. 2 on the depth chart before the season is over.
Huddle Up: On the heels of the JaMarcus Russell debacle the Raiders haven't exactly invested heavily in the quarterback position, so for a fourth-round pick to emerge and develop would be a welcome boost to the organization.

Posted: 5/11/2013 3:24am et
Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp after undergoing thumb surgery earlier this offseason. He is expected to be limited during the team's rookie minicamp.
Huddle Up: Randle should still be able to take mental reps and pick up the offense, which is critical if he is to be the backup to DeMarco Murray.

Posted: 5/11/2013 3:24am et
San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore said he would be fine with sitting out the entire 2013 season if that is what the team thinks is best. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Lattimore's anterior cruciate ligament looks good, but the team wants him to slow down on his cutting drills.
Huddle Up: Sounds as if Lattimore is setting expectations for dynasty league drafters. Lattimore still has plenty of upside, but right now he appears to be bracing himself for a redshirt season.

Posted: 5/11/2013 3:24am et
Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin agreed to terms on a four year contract that will pay $2.85 million that includes $598,876 bonus.
Huddle Up: Goodwin will battle T.J. Graham for the speed receiver role in Doug Marrone's offense. Hey, maybe there's room for two speed guys.

Posted: 5/10/2013 3:13pm et
Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle is wearing a brace over his hand to protect a hand injury.
Huddle Up: The potential handcuff to oft-injured starter DeMarco Murray is already dinged? Ruh-roh.

Posted: 5/10/2013 3:13pm et
The Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with fourth-round draft choice RB Johnathan Franklin on a four-year deal worth slightly more than $2.5 million. Franklin will be able to participate in offseason workouts since he graduated last June.
Huddle Up: Franklin will battle Eddie Lacy for carries in one of the more intriguing backfield battles of the offseason. It can only benefit Franklin to be there for the entirety of the offseason workouts.

Miami Dolphins TE Dion Sims is expected to push for playing time after dropping to 264 pounds from the 280-pound range. The team expects to use him in two-tight end sets with TE Dustin Keller. Keller isn't known to be a great blocker, and Sims will be relied upon to block.
Huddle Up: The Dolphins didn't sign Keller in free agency to sit around, and if Sims is to be the blocking half of Miami's tight end tandem there's definitely a ceiling on his fantasy value as a rookie.

Updating previous reports, Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy didn't have toe fusion surgery before his senior year at Alabama. It was a surgery to correct turf toe. Unlike the typical toe fusion surgery--which hardens the toe completely, limiting mobility--only the bone on the tip of Lacy's big toe was fused. "The joint underneath the toenail was fused to allow the ligament to work better basically," Alabama's team doctor E. Lyle Cain Jr. said. "It's something you do to give you a better push-off. His big toe moves just like a normal big toe in terms of motion... If you fused it completely, it'd give you a stiff big toe and you can't push off and that's a big problem. In Eddie's case, he does not have that. His fusion does not affect his big-toe motion."
Huddle Up: Lacy fell in the 2013 Draft reportedly because of injury concerns, the greatest of which is the turf toe he had surgery on. This is a bit of positive news, that the surgery wasn't as significant or limiting as perhaps some fear. Though it does conjure images of Uma Thurman in the back of a big yellow truck willing herself to "wiggle your big toe". Or Bill Murray leading the troops in "big round of applause to our newest, bestest buddy, and big toe... Sergeant Hulka".

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said the team can play up-tempo offense or slow the offense down depending on the situation. "The thing I want to make sure everyone understands is we do have the ability to huddle and the ability to slow the game down if we wanted to. If we're ahead on the scoreboard and we're in a four-minute situation and you want to slow the game down, we have the ability to do that. We practice both right now and that will continue in terms of tempo. I like playing fast. I think you have a great advantage with that," Marrone said. Marrone said the up-tempo style will allow the team to earn more possessions during games.
Huddle Up: You're seeing more and more teams pick up the tempo, and part of the reason the Bills tabbed Marrone was his ability to implement such a system at Syracuse. Of course, like the kids in the AT&T commercials, fantasy owners want faster and more--specifically a faster-paced offense that runs more plays and gives itself the chance to score more points. Maybe they could tape a cheetah to E.J. Manuel's back...

Posted: 5/9/2013 12:54am et
Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden said he believes TE Tyler Eifert can be a difference-maker for the team if he becomes more of a blocker. Gruden said the team will see what kind of blocker Eifert is during their rookie minicamp and work with him from there.
Huddle Up: Improved blocking would likely keep Eifert on the field over Jermaine Gresham in one-tight end sets; he's already being pegged as the "move" tight end in two-TE formations. Expect the Bengals to find ways to use Eifert to take advantage of coverages geared towards stopping A.J. Green.

Posted: 5/6/2013 11:03pm et
Miami Dolphins TE Dion Sims could see time in two-tight end sets this season because of his blocking ability.
Huddle Up: Sadly, there are few if any fantasy leagues that score points for blocking acumen. There are plenty of other single-tight end teams and more prolific multiple-TE clubs, so Sims is unlikely to make a ripple on the fantasy radar.

There is mutual interest between the Kansas City Chiefs and OT Branden Albert on signing him to a contract extension.
Huddle Up: Since the Chiefs weren't able to get what they wanted in a trade for Albert, and since Andy Reid would love to protect his quarterback with a pair of talented tackles, it makes sense for the Chiefs to pursue some sort of deal that would not only lock up Albert long-term but also reduce the cap hit of the franchise contract he's playing this season under.

Posted: 5/6/2013 11:32am et
Cincinnati Bengals RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis is expected to see the most carries this season. It would also be a surprise if both RBs Bernard Scott and Giovani Bernard made the team.
Huddle Up: The Bengals need a change-of-pace option to BJGE, and Scott has been unable to fill that role so it would make sense that Bernard will be Cincy's RB2--and an intriguing PPR/performance league fantasy option as well.

Posted: 5/4/2013 11:05am et
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson made his debut Friday, May 3, at the team's rookie minicamp. He showed his speed and versatility, taking a majority of his repetitions with the first-team offense. He lined up in the backfield and at receiver during the two-hour practice.
Huddle Up: It will be interesting to see how the Jaguars opt to use the athletic Robinson. With Justin Blackmon down for the first four games of the season there will be opportunities at receiver, and with Maurice Jones-Drew coming off a foot injury and still unhappy with his contract there could be backfield touches to be had as well.

Posted: 5/3/2013 9:32pm et
Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said there is no timetable for DE Dion Jordan's return. "He's going to get himself well as quickly and completely as he possibly can, whenever that is," Philbin said. "And when the medical people deem that he's healthy, he will be joining us on a full-time basis."
Huddle Up: Jordan is recovering from shoulder surgery, but the hope is that he'll be ready to roll by the start of training camp.

Posted: 5/3/2013 4:05pm et
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James could have the inside track as the team's backup running back behind RB Doug Martin, according to general manager Mark Dominik.
Huddle Up: There's your handcuff alert, though hopefully Martin doesn't go down and your league isn't so big so as to require you to lock up Martin's backup.

The Green Bay Packers are undergoing some changes to their offensive line for the 2013 season. In addition to moving OT Bryan Bulaga to left tackle, the coaches have flipped OG T.J. Lang and OG Josh Sitton, moving Lang from left to right guard and Sitton from right to left guard. OT Marshall Newhouse, OT Don Barclay and OT Derek Sherrod will compete for the starting right tackle spot.
Huddle Up: The Packers are hoping experience and health will lead to improved line play, as they did not address the position during the first two days of the draft and added just one (tackle David Bakhtiari) on Day Three. The sacks don't seem to bother Aaron Rodgers, but this line isn't well-suited for run blocking and could throw a wet blanket on the climbing fantasy value of rookie running back Eddie Lacy.

Posted: 5/3/2013 9:50am et
Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated OT Branden Albert will start at left tackle this season while OT Eric Fisher will start at right tackle.
Huddle Up: Albert's presence allows the Chiefs to ease Fisher into the NFL at right tackle before sliding him across after Albert presumably leaves via free agency following the season.

Posted: 5/1/2013 5:40pm et
The Cincinnati Bengals could use CB Onterio McCalebb at wide receiver during offseason workouts because they are looking for a position to use him. The team thinks he is too small to play running back, which is where he played in college.
Huddle Up: The fasted player at the 2013 Combine, McCalebb was moved to cornerback during the Bengals' rookie camp in addition to working as a return man, his primary position. He would likely play the slot if lining up at wideout, given his smallish stature, and it's difficult to see him making a meaningful fantasy contribution outside of the return game.

Posted: 5/1/2013 5:40pm et
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley said the team sees RB Le'Veon Bell as a three-down running back. Haley said Bell was the top running back on the team's draft board.
Huddle Up: Bell will have an opportunity to be the Steelers' feature-back role, though he'll have to beat out Isaac Redman and/or Jonathan Dwyer for either the top spot or a lead role in a backfield committee. Obviously, Bell's fantasy value climbs the more he's on the field.

Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix said Tuesday, April 30, that the team had a first-to-second round grade on WR Da'Rick Rogers, whom the team signed as an undrafted free agent. "Being from Tennessee, I've known his background," Nix said. "He's from Calhoun, Georgia, I knew him when he was playing in high school. The guy's got tremendous talent. He's made some bad decisions. It's gotten him in trouble. Got him out of the University of Tennessee, from an All-SEC performance in his sophomore year, and he goes to Tennessee Tech where he has a so-so year. He played down to the level of competition, really. But this guy's talented. He can play. The ball's in his court. He goes by the rules, and does like he's supposed to, or he goes somewhere else."
Huddle Up: There's little question about Rogers' talent, but off-field concerns knocked him all the way out of the draft. He'll have an opportunity in Buffalo, and if he can stay out of his own way he could emerge as a key component in what might turn out to be a talented Bills' receiving corps.

Posted: 5/1/2013 2:09am et
Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley said he expects third-round pick WR Markus Wheaton to play both inside and outside. The team likes the speed he possesses.
Huddle Up: The Steelers let Mike Wallace walk in the offseason, then replace the former third-round speedster with... a third-round speedster. Expect Wheaton to move quickly into Pittsburgh's receiver rotation alongside Emmanuel Sanders and Antonio Brown, much like Wallace did in posting 756 yards and six TDs as a rookie.

Posted: 4/29/2013 11:05am et
The Kansas City Chiefs are still looking to deal OT Branden Albert, even though talks with the Miami Dolphins are dormant. The Detroit Lions, San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals could be fits.
Huddle Up: If the Chiefs are set on unloading a quality left tackle, they'll find takers; however, if they're trading for draft picks the payoff is now a year away. Then again, if he stays in KC he walks at the end of the season with no payoff at all.

Posted: 4/29/2013 11:05am et
The Buffalo Bills are taking a low-risk, high-reward chance on WR Da'Rick Rogers, who was signed as an undrafted free agent Saturday, April 27. Rogers had the physical tools to be a draft pick, but poor off-field judgment hurt his stock and raised red flags. "It's frustrating, but I did it to myself," Rogers said at the NFL Scouting Combine. "And I realize how hard I have to work now that I'm behind the 8-ball. It's going to make me work that much harder."
Huddle Up: Rogers is incredibly talented and has a real opportunity in Buffalo. He could battle Robert Woods and T.J. Wright for the starting job opposite Stevie Johnson, but at minimum he should be in the regular receiver rotation.

Posted: 4/27/2013 12:12am et
The New Orleans Saints traded RB Chris Ivory to the New York Jets for a fourth-round draft pick. The Jets are expected to sign the newly-acquired Ivory to a long-term contract, according to sources.
Huddle Up: The Saints finally got the compensation they were looking for, and the Jets likely have their feature back. So much for Mike Goodson's mini-run as a sleeper candidate.

Posted: 4/26/2013 11:05am et
The Buffalo Bills' selection of QB EJ Manuel in the first round of the NFL Draft likely means the team will incorporate the read-option as part of their offensive scheme.
Huddle Up: Read-option is the hot trend in the NFL right now, and Manual is the quarterback in this year's draft class who most closely resembles Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin in terms of running ability with at least a modicum of passing acumen. So it makes sense that Doug Marrone and the Bills would take advantage of that skill set.

Posted: 4/26/2013 11:05am et
The Miami Dolphins will resume trade talks for Kansas City Chiefs OT Branden Albert Friday, April 26, after they did not select a tackle in the first round of the NFL Draft.
Huddle Up: The Chiefs are still seeking a second-round pick, but in a deal with Miami that pick would now be the 22nd pick in Round 2 (which the Dolphins received from the Colts) rather than the 10th pick in the round (which the Dolphins traded to Oakland during Thursday's first round). The alternative for Miami would be to enter the season with Jonathan Martin and Will Yeatman as their starting tackles, which wouldn't be conducive to providing Ryan Tannehill with the time necessary to go deep to new acquisition Mike Wallace.

Posted: 4/22/2013 9:58am et
The New York Jets are have offered a sixth-round pick for New Orleans Saints RB Chris Ivory. They are likely to offer a fifth rounder, which may be enough to get him.
Huddle Up: In New Orleans, Ivory would be log-jammed behind Darren Sproles, Pierre Thomas, and Mark Ingram; in New York, he'd be the top candidate to start on a run-first team behind a pretty good run-blocking offensive line. If the trade goes through Ivory will pop up on fantasy radars, likely with too much hype to be considered a true sleeper candidate.

Posted: 4/19/2013 10:29pm et
The New York Jets have made an offer for New Orleans Saints RB Chris Ivory. The Jets are interested in trading for the Saints running back.
Huddle Up: Now that Ivory is under contract, the Saints can trade him. And right now the Jets' starting running back is Mike Goodman. Ivory has flashed ability when given the opportunity, so a starting gig in New York would make him a bona fide fantasy factor.

Posted: 4/19/2013 5:09pm et
The New Orleans Saints re-signed RB Chris Ivory Friday, April 19. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Huddle Up: On the surface it appears as if Ivory will be buried in the Saints' committee backfield, but there's been significant buzz about him to the point that the Saints may consider trading him. A player can't be traded until he's under contract, so don't write off Ivory as a fantasy entity just yet.

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said he hopes WR Rod Streater will be able to continue his improvement in 2013. "I want to see him start where he left off, but I want to see continued improvement," Allen said. "I think the guy's got talent. I think he's a good route-runner. I think he's got good ball skills. I think he'll go up and attack the ball. I think he's a tough kid. I think he believes in a lot of the things I'm looking for in a football player."
Huddle Up: Streater flashed his ability last season and should see even more opportunity with Oakland's receiving corps thinned this offseason; of course, those gains may be offset by Terrelle Pryor taking over as the Raiders' quarterback.

Posted: 2/20/2013 9:24am et
California WR Keenan Allen is nursing a sprained posterior cruciate ligament that will prevent him from working out at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Huddle Up: It's a competitive wide receiver class this season, and Allen is expected to be among the top picks at his position. Missing out at the Combine could ding his draft stock if some of the other elite wideouts show well in Indy.

Posted: 2/18/2013 11:53am et
Southern California QB Matt Barkley will not throw at the NFL Scouting Combine. He might run, but will not throw until his Pro Day March 27. Doctors who have examined and worked with Barkley are convinced he has made outstanding progress from a separated shoulder. He already has been cleared to throw at his Pro Day. Barkley's shoulder is said to be 85 to 90 percent recovered. NFL teams will receive medical information from Dr. James Andrews to back up Barkley's decision not to throw at the Combine. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, it's indeed a medical decision as to why Barkley is not throwing.
Huddle Up: Barkley can use the shoulder injury as a reason for not throwing at the Combine, but the fact of the matter is most top-end quarterbacks prefer to throw at their Pro Day--to their own receivers, following their own script of throws.

Posted: 2/2/2013 12:03am et
Southern California QB Matt Barkley said he is not sure if he will be throwing at the NFL Scouting Combine. "It seems to be the trend not to (throw at the combine), and I don't feel that I have to," Barkley said. "We'll see when that time gets closer. It will be more of a game-day decision as to whether I'm going to. I want to do as much as I can. ... I don't feel I have to necessarily prove anything," Barkley said. He is expected to throw at a pro day after the combine.
Huddle Up: More and more college QBs are opting to skip the throwing portion of the combine, choosing instead to throw to receivers they are familiar with and using a script of throws they develop themselves; Barkley seems to be following that same plan. He's also coming back from a shoulder injury and may want to take as much time as possible to heal before auditioning for an NFL job.

Posted: 2/1/2013 3:53pm et
Baltimore Ravens C Matt Birk said he's willing to donate his brain post-mortem for research on chronic traumatic encephalopathy.
Huddle Up: Birk is using the Super Bowl pulpit to encourage other active NFL players to donate their brains as well to further the research being done on the connection between football and brain injuries. Plus, he went to Harvard so his brain must be really, really big.

Posted: 1/30/2013 11:33am et
San Francisco 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and secondary coach Ed Donatell have strong 3-4 defensive scheme credentials and might be on the radar of the New Orleans Saints for their defensive coordinator vacancy.
Huddle Up: Several 49ers assistants have had to put their job search on hold during their Super Bowl run, but in the case of the Saints that may wind up being a blessing in disguise.

Posted: 1/25/2013 3:14pm et
Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said the team is searching for a running back in this year's draft. "We need that shifty back that can come in and be that change-of-pace guy who can catch passes out of the backfield, a guy that can run routes and get one-on-one with a linebacker," Mayhew said. "That's what Jahvid [Best] gave us, a guy with some juice, some elusiveness." Oregon RB Kenjon Barner, Stanford RB Stepfan Taylor and Florida RB Mike Gillislee were the most impressive at the Senior Bowl this week, and Taylor is the most complete back of the three.
Huddle Up: The Lions cobbled together a backfield last season but it was primarily plodders; if they're looking to replace Best's speed and shiftiness, Barner would be an obvious candidate.

Posted: 1/25/2013 3:14pm et
Pat Dye, agent for South Carolina RB Marcus Lattimore, said Lattimore is scheduled to begin jogging next week. Lattimore recently met with Dr. James Andrews and was told that his torn lateral collateral ligament and posterior cruciate ligament have healed. Dye also said Lattimore is on a rehab from his torn anterior cruciate ligament that will allow him to be ready for the 2013 season.
Huddle Up: Lattimore has tons of potential, and after what Adrian Peterson accomplished in his first year following knee surgery teams may be more willing to take a chance on a player coming off such an injury. It's still aggressive to expect much from him as a rookie, but it's at least worth tracking where he lands and how his rehab goes heading into the season.
