San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald needs to tap his potential in the team's two tight-end set in 2014, in the opinion of Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.
Huddle Up: 8 catches for 119 yards and no TDs certainly qualifies as disappointing for the 2013 2nd-round pick. A big second-year step forward is most definitely in order.

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald (undisclosed) was back at practice Tuesday, Aug. 20.
Huddle Up: The 2nd-round pick from Rice made a strong first impression, hauling in 4 passes for 66 yards in the Niners' preseason opener and still leads the team despite failing to catch a pass in the 2nd game. With san Fran's WR corps not in the best of shape, McDonald could see action with starter Vernon Davis in 2-TE sets this season.

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald is expected to be the team's No. 2 tight end this season. He should be able to adapt quickly to blocking during training camp after being used mostly in the slot during his college career.
Huddle Up: The Niners' TE2 role is one that Delanie Walker turned into moderate success last year before leaving via free agency. And with Vernon Davis expected to line up as a wide receiver to help offset the loss of Michael Crabtree, McDonald could see an uptick in productivity over what Walker did last year.
