Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor worked with the first-team offense in place of RB Andre Ellington (neck) Tuesday, July 29. Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com believes the move means that Taylor is ahead of RB Jonathan Dwyer in the battle for the No. 2 RB job.
Huddle Up: The Cards' No. 2 RB gig is intriguing as many wonder how many carries Ellington will be able to shoulder, but also be mindful that it's still more than a week before the Cards play their first preseason game and the depth chart may shuffle several times before the dust settles.
Kelvin Benjamin - WR - Carolina Panthers
(7/29/2014 11:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin said his knee felt better Tuesday, July 29, and he could be back sooner than expected. Benjamin suffered a bruised left knee in practice Sunday, July 27.
Huddle Up: Keep an eye on the first-round pick whom Cam Newton and the Panthers are counting on to lock down a starting role in a completely overhauled WR corps.
Bishop Sankey - RB - Tennessee Titans
(7/29/2014 11:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey earned praise from head coach Ken Whisenhunt for his quick cuts and willingness to lower his shoulder during practice Tuesday, July 29. Whisenhunt also said that Sankey was drafted in part because he is a good fit for the offensive system.
Huddle Up: Sankey, the first RB selected in May's draft, continues to look like the best fantasy RB bet in Tennessee with veteran Shonn Greene slow rounding into camp form coming off a pair of knee procedures in the last year.
Calvin Johnson - WR - Detroit Lions
(7/29/2014 11:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is taking part in fewer reps in training camp this year than in years past and said he is trying to be smarter about his approach to practice with the goal of staying healthy the entire season. 'I'm older now,' Johnson said. 'I'm not diving for the balls anymore (in practice). Coach Caldwell has a big emphasis about us staying off the ground. I'm not playing every play in practice but they're working me in. I'm out here trying to get my extra running in after (practice) so I can keep my wind up.'
Huddle Up: Megatron still will only be 29 in Sept., but is coming off a 2013 season in which he matched his career low for games played with 14 and had three-year lows in catches (84) and receiving yards (1,492).
Giorgio Tavecchio - PK - Detroit Lions
(7/29/2014 11:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Detroit Lions Ks Giorgio Tavecchio and Nate Freese both missed field-goal attempts from nearly 50 yards during practice Tuesday, July 29, and the two remain in a tight competition for the starting kicking job.
Huddle Up: No rush here, and don't expect things to be decided until most -- if not all -- of the preseason has run its course.
Marshawn Lynch - RB - Seattle Seahawks
(7/29/2014 8:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch has been fined $275,000 for missing his sixth straight day of training camp, per collective bargaining agreement rules.
Huddle Up: Ouch -- that's quite the Beastly penalty as the stalemate continues. In the meantime, the fantasy stocks of backups Christine Michael and Robert Turbin continue to climb.
Andre Ellington - RB - Arizona Cardinals
(7/29/2014 8:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (neck) will return to practice Wednesday, July 30, after sitting out Tuesday, July 29.
Huddle Up: Good news for the speedy second-year back who has generated much fantasy buzz this offseason as he assumes the starting role in the desert.
Pat Angerer - LB - Atlanta Falcons
(7/29/2014 8:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Atlanta Falcons LB Pat Angerer left practice Tuesday, July 29, with an undisclosed injury. Angerer reportedly appeared to be favoring his right leg.
Huddle Up: Angerer was brought in to ease the pain over Sean Weatherspoon's season-ending injury, but the former Colt isn't without his own injury issues, having missed a combined 10 games over his last 2 seasons in Indy. Keep an eye out for further updates.
Ahmad Brooks - LB - San Francisco 49ers
(7/29/2014 8:00pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
San Francisco 49ers LB Ahmad Brooks restructured his contract to give the team $2 million more in cap space, according to a source.
Huddle Up: With NaVorro Bowman likely to miss the first half of the season, the Niners will be counting heavily on Brooks, who is coming off career highs last season in total tackles (60), passes defensed (7) and sacks (8.5).
Steven Jackson - RB - Atlanta Falcons
(7/29/2014 8:00pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Steven Jackson injured his hamstring Monday, July 28, which is why he wasn't practicing Tuesday, July 29. Head coach Mike Smith said Jackson will be ready for the team's first preseason game.
Huddle Up: Something to definitely monitor as Jackson missed 4 full games last season and finished with a career season lows in rushing yards (543) and yards from scrimmage (734).
Jairus Byrd - S - New Orleans Saints
(7/29/2014 8:00pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (back) practiced for the first time this offseason Tuesday, July 29. Byrd will gradually make his way back and did not take part in full-team drills.
Huddle Up: The ball-hawking safety and prize free-agent acquisition (22 interceptions and 5 fumble recoveries in his first 5 seasons) is coming off offseason back surgery and it could even take a few regular-season games for the Pro Bowler to hit his full stride.
Anthony McCoy - TE - Seattle Seahawks
(7/29/2014 5:59pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Seattle Seahawks TE Anthony McCoy (Achilles') reportedly tore his left Achilles' in practice Tuesday, July 29. McCoy would likely miss the entire 2014 season.
Huddle Up: You really have to feel for McCoy, who missed all of last season with an injury to his right Achilles'. In the meantime, Zach Miller and Luke Willson remain atop the Seattle TE depth chart, and we'll have to see if the defending champs add anyone else for depth purposes.
Andre Johnson - WR - Houston Texans
(7/29/2014 5:59pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson left practice Tuesday, July 29, with a strained hamstring.
Huddle Up: This was reported as an early-camp strain and nothing more at this point, but it immediately conjures up painful memories of the WR's hammy-hampered 2011 campaign (7 games) in which he recorded career lows across the board with 33 catches, 492 yards and 2 TDs.
Josh Gordon - WR - Cleveland Browns
(7/29/2014 5:59pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Cleveland Browns WR Josh Gordon will argue that second-hand marijuana smoke caused a positive test, and that he should not be suspended in an appeal hearing Friday, Aug. 1.
Huddle Up: Nothing definitive here to alter any draft strategies -- just the latest update on 2013's top fantasy WR and his ongoing battle to avoid a year-long suspension.
Phillip Tanner - RB - Indianapolis Colts
(7/29/2014 3:52pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
The Indianapolis Colts signed RB Phillip Tanner (Cowboys) Tuesday, July 29. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Huddle Up: Indy continues to bolster its backfield depth in back of Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw following Vick Ballard's season-ending Achilles' tear last week. There's no real fantasy implications here unless the backfield injuries continue.
David Wilson - RB - New York Giants
(7/29/2014 3:52pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating a previous report, New York Giants RB David Wilson left practice with a neck burner Tuesday, July 29.
Huddle Up: The Giants and Wilson's fantasy owners can only hope this isn't a surgery-related setback for the RB who had just been cleared after recovering from last season's neck procedure. Updates will be forthcoming from the team.
Brian Hoyer - QB - Cleveland Browns
(7/29/2014 2:00pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) is outperforming rookie QB Johnny Manziel so far in camp, and the starting quarterback job has been Hoyer's job to lose, as observed by Jason La Canfora. Hoyer looks crisper with his mental speed, including actions in the huddle, at the line and during plays. Hoyer is not gun-shy as his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament continues 'to wow the Browns,' according to La Canfora. Manziel also has acted somewhat guarded around his new teammates.
Huddle Up: Hoyer is certainly the man if you need to draft a viable starting QB for right now, but Johnny Football still remains the best option for those fantasy GMs looking farther down the line.
Jimmy Clausen - QB - Chicago Bears
(7/29/2014 1:54pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Chicago Bears QB Jimmy Clausen was accurate with his throws during practice Monday, July 28, and he led a touchdown drive during a two-minute drill. Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com believes Clausen is 'very much' in the mix for the backup QB job.
Huddle Up: Hey, who knows, Clausen could find himself in fantasy play at the controls of one of the league's top offenses if something happens to starter Jay Cutler. Jordan Palmer and 6th-round pick David Fales also are in the running for the No. 2 QB gig so stay tuned.
Cam Newton - QB - Carolina Panthers
(7/29/2014 1:54pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) isn't running outside of the pocket during training camp, but he has been able to plant in the pocket to make throws without any complications.
Huddle Up: All indications are Cam is right on track and even ahead of schedule, and the Panthers certainly aren't going to have the QB scrambling all over and pushing things during the early stages of camp.
Odell Beckham Jr. - WR - New York Giants
(7/29/2014 1:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) will not play in the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 3.
Huddle Up: It had certainly been heading that way with the first-round pick dealing with a nagging sore hammy, but the Giants still do have 4 more preseason contests after Sunday's HOF Game so the rookie will still have time to get back on track and establish his role in the N.Y. WR corps.
Pierre Garcon - WR - Washington Redskins
(7/29/2014 1:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating a previous report, Washington Redskins WR Pierre Garcon could return to practice Wednesday, July 30, after suffering a minor hamstring injury in practice. "I'll be good," Garcon said. "No need to really rush it, or trying put everything to the wall right now. It is the first week of training camp."
Huddle Up: The vet Garcon definitely has the right outlook with Washington's first preseason contest still 9 days away.
Aaron Dobson - WR - New England Patriots
(7/29/2014 1:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating an ongoing story, New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson underwent surgery March 10 to have a screw permanently implanted into his injured left foot. Dobson had a stress fracture fixed, and the initial prognosis of two to three months is now an overly optimistic timetable. He began running in July but has not showcased any change-of-direction work in practice.
Huddle Up: The games that count are still more than a month away, but in the meantime, Dobson -- who's on the PUP list -- is falling behind fellow second-year WRs Kenbrell Thompkins & Josh Boyce and FA signee Brandon LaFell in the battle for WR pecking order on the squad.
Chris Ivory - RB - New York Jets
(7/29/2014 10:32am et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is likely to be the team's goal line back, according to running backs coach Anthony Lynn.
Huddle Up: Before you hit the panic button on Chris Johnson's fantasy value, keep in mind that CJ?K tends to score more touchdowns from 50 yards and out than he does from five yards and in so this shouldn't ding his stats significantly. It does, however, give Ivory some value in TD-heavy scoring systems.
Rod Streater - WR - Oakland Raiders
(7/29/2014 10:32am et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Oakland Raiders WR Rod Streater (concussion) is dealing with a concussion, head coach Dennis Allen confirmed Monday, July 28.
Huddle Up: Streater should be among the Raiders' top receivers, but any time you're dealing with a concussion it puts the timetable on hold. Worse, after one concussion a player is more susceptible to future concussions, so you can officially move Streater into the "injury risk" category.
Jerrel Jernigan - WR - New York Giants
(7/29/2014 10:32am et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan is expected to compete with rookie WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) for a starting spot.
Huddle Up: Beckham is not helping himself by missing time with a hamstring injury. Jernigan has been a solid contributor and offers Eli Manning and the Giants a nice fallback plan.
