Shonn Greene - RB - Tennessee Titans
(7/28/2014 1:34pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Tennessee Titans RB Shonn Greene needs to lose five to ten pounds during training camp, according to the coaching staff.
Huddle Up: This isn't good news for a guy trying to win a starting job. Greene is coming off a year where he averaged 3.8 yards per carry and there have been reports that his roster spot in Tennessee may not be secure. All signs are pointing to rookie Bishop Sankey being the Titans top RB this season. Sankey currently carries an ADP of Round 5.
Frank Gore - RB - San Francisco 49ers
(7/28/2014 1:34pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is unlikely to play in the preseason this year. RBs Carlos Hyde and Jewel Hampton have both looked good so far during training camp. The injuries to RBs Kendall Hunter (knee) and LaMichael James (elbow) have left the team thin at the running back position. RB Marcus Lattimore isn't practicing yet due to physical limitations and not the mental side of his recovery from a significant knee injury in college.
Huddle Up: With the 49ers thin at RB, it makes sense that the team doesn't want to risk injury to Gore. Hyde will get plenty of opportunities to shine this preseason and secure a job as the 49ers No. 2 and goal line back this season.
Ray Rice - RB - Baltimore Ravens
(7/28/2014 10:50am et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Baltimore Ravens RB Ray Rice did not appeal his two-game suspension.
Huddle Up: Ray Rice should thank his lucky stars the NFL is more concerned about performance enhancing drugs and DUIs than domestic violence. Bernard Pierce will get the bulk of the carries while Rice sits, and if Rice doesn't perform significantly better than he did last year he may return to a jobshare rather than the feature back workload he's been used to.
Chris Rainey - RB - Indianapolis Colts
(7/28/2014 10:50am et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating an earlier report, the Indianapolis Colts released RB Chris Rainey for a violation of team rules.
Huddle Up: With Vick Ballard out there was an opportunity for Rainey to carve out a roster spot behind (or alongside) Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw. Instead, he's looking for work.
Rishard Matthews - WR - Miami Dolphins
(7/28/2014 10:50am et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Miami Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews stood out Sunday, July 27, with a series of catches that anointed him the unofficial star of the workout.
Huddle Up: The Dolphins could use a little good news, especially in the passing game. Matthews will be battling for a complementary role in the Miami passing game, but with Bill Lazor at OC and Ryan Tannehill at quarterback there could be enough improvement for more than just Mike Wallace to be a fantasy factor.
Kyle Rudolph - TE - Minnesota Vikings
(7/27/2014 11:33pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
The Minnesota Vikings have signed TE Kyle Rudolph to a five-year extension worth $36.5 million Sunday, July 27.
Huddle Up: There are high fantasy hopes for Rudolph this season with the addition of new offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who has a track record of featuring tight ends (Jay Novacek, Antonio Gates, Jordan Cameron) in his offenses.
LaMichael James - RB - San Francisco 49ers
(7/27/2014 11:33pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James (dislocated elbow) likely will miss the entire preseason but should be ready for the start of the regular season.
Huddle Up: In the meantime, newcomers Carlos Hyde and/or Marcus Lattimore will have more of an opportunity to establish themselves in the Niners' RB rotation and that very likely could keep James' contributions to a minimum after getting only 44 total offensive touches in his first 2 seasons.
Lamar Miller - RB - Miami Dolphins
(7/27/2014 11:33pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller will be used much like Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy was last season. That means he should see quite a few passes headed his way. He'll have to hold off Knowshon Moreno (knee), but Miller seems to be clearly in the lead in the backfield.
Huddle Up: Miller had 100 fantasy points on 203 offensive touches, including 26 receptions, last season to finish 38th among all NFL RBs, and with Moreno sure to carve out a role once he gets healthy, it's hard to envision Miller getting that many more opportunities this fall.
Christine Michael - RB - Seattle Seahawks
(7/27/2014 11:33pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Seattle Seahawks RB Christine Michael left practice early Sunday, July 27, after dinging his right shoulder. Head coach Pete Carroll said Michael should be able to return Tuesday, July 29.
Huddle Up: Michael is a hot fantasy commodity growing even warmer as Marshawn Lynch's holdout continues, but injury issues could tap the brakes a little as the second-year RB doesn't exactly have a proven NFL track record (18 carries for 79 yards) to fall back on.
LaMichael James - RB - San Francisco 49ers
(7/27/2014 8:43pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating an earlier report, San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James suffered a dislocated elbow in practice Sunday, July 27 and was carted off the field.
Huddle Up: Just when it appeared James was in line for more work following the ACL tear suffered by fellow RB Kendall Hunter last week, the injury bug strikes again in the Niners' backfield. Unlike Hunter, though, James should be able to return to the field, but for now, it means more reps for second-round pick Carlos Hyde behind starter Frank Gore.
Scott Chandler - TE - Buffalo Bills
(7/27/2014 8:43pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Buffalo Bills TE Scott Chandler suffered a groin injury Sunday, July 27. WR Kevin Elliott is suffering from concussion-like symptoms.
Huddle Up: With backups Tony Moeaki (hamstring) and Chris Gragg (dehydration) already out, it leaves the Bills pretty thin at TE with Will Smith currently the only man standing. We don't yet know the severity of Chandler's injury, so keep an eye on this developing situation.
Geno Smith - QB - New York Jets
(7/27/2014 2:36pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
New York Jets QB Geno Smith received 16 snaps with the first-team offense during practice Saturday, July 26, while QB Michael Vick received three snaps. Smith has received 42 starter reps in three practices while Vick has received 12 snaps.
Huddle Up: Nothing unexpected here as it's going to be up to the newcomer Vick to outplay and unseat the second-year Smith this preseason. Smith will also hasten a change under center if he can't show he's cleaned up his decision-making after turning the ball over 26 times as a rookie.
Robert Meachem - WR - New Orleans Saints
(7/27/2014 2:28pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
New Orleans Saints WR Robert Meachem (undisclosed) and Kenny Stills (quadriceps) are not participating in practice Sunday, July 27.
Huddle Up: Details are sketchy, but there has been nothing to indicate that these are anything more than minor issues at this point. At the same time, though, it's opening the door for more opportunities for first-round pick Brandin Cooks.
Trent Richardson - RB - Indianapolis Colts
(7/27/2014 2:28pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Indianapolis Colts RB Trent Richardson has not been participating in training-camp practices because of a soft-tissue issue, according to head coach Chuck Pagano. Pagano said the team is being careful with Richardson and want him to be 100 percent before he returns to the field.
Huddle Up: With fellow RB Vick Ballard's season already over before it got started, the Colts are counting on a bounce-back season from Richardson more than ever and certainly aren't going to take the chance of aggravating a minor issue in the opening week of camp.
Bernard Pierce - RB - Baltimore Ravens
(7/27/2014 2:28pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens RB Bernard Pierce left practice Saturday, July 26, because of an illness.
Huddle Up: Repeating, it's an illness, not any sort of injury, for the RB who for now is slated to be the Ravens' starter the first 2 weeks of the season.
Tony Moeaki - TE - Buffalo Bills
(7/27/2014 2:13pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Buffalo Bills TE Tony Moeaki (hamstring) will be out a significant amount of time with a hamstring injury. TE Chris Gragg (dehydration) is expected back by next week.
Huddle Up: Moeaki can't seem to stay on the field -- he's already missed 33 of a possible 64 games so far in 4 pro seasons -- and it looks like starter Scott Chandler isn't going to have much competition for the time being.
Mike James - RB - Tampa Bay Buccaneers
(7/27/2014 2:13pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James has been working with the second- team offense. Bobby Rainey and rookie Charles Sims should still figure into the mix as well.
Huddle Up: It's a bit surprising given that Rainey emerged as the main man last season after starter Doug Martin went down and Sims is the squad's third-round draft pick, but there's still 6 weeks and 4 preseason tilts until we get to the games that count -- giving the new coaching regime plenty of time to make depth-chart tweaks.
Jordy Nelson - WR - Green Bay Packers
(7/26/2014 1:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Green Bay Packers WR Jordy Nelson signed a four-year, $39 million extension with $14.2 million guaranteed, according to a source.
Huddle Up: The Packers wanted to keep at least some of their receiving corps intact for Aaron Rodgers after losing Donald Driver, Greg Jennings, and James Jones the past few seasons. With Nelson locked in, the Pack can turn their focus to free agent-to-be Randall Cobb.
Kendall Hunter - RB - San Francisco 49ers
(7/26/2014 1:47pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the Friday, July 25, practice, according to a source. Hunter will subsequently miss the entire 2014 season.
Huddle Up: Hunter was expected to see a bump in workload as a compliment to Frank Gore. Now the Niners will turn to Marcus Lattimore and Carlos Hyde to round out their backfield committee.
Ace Sanders - WR - Jacksonville Jaguars
(7/26/2014 1:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee is expected to see some work in the slot during training camp and the preseason with WR Ace Sanders suspended.
Huddle Up: If and when the Jaguars get all their receivers assembled--assuming Justin Blackmon returns from suspension and the team re-signs Cecil Shorts in the offseason--Lee would be the most likely slot candidate anyway. And you would think the Jags view him as an upgrade to Sanders, so if the outside spots are filled when Sanders returns Lee may still keep the job. Either way, it's another opportunity for the rookie to get on the field sooner rather than later.
Toby Gerhart - RB - Jacksonville Jaguars
(7/26/2014 1:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Jacksonville Jaguars RB Toby Gerhart can handle the workload of a starting running back due to his build and frame, according to general manager Dave Caldwell. The GM also took issue with the opinion Gerhart cannot be a home-run hitting back.
Huddle Up: Gerhart may have to create his own holes behind a rebuilt line in Jacksonville, so a little girth to his frame isn't a bad thing. It's easy to forget he was a Heisman finalist in college and is a more complete back than he's been given the opportunity to show as Adrian Peterson's caddy in Minnesota--though he may not have the blazing speed you associate with a home-run back.
Cecil Shorts - WR - Jacksonville Jaguars
(7/26/2014 1:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts has plenty of company, but general manager Dave Caldwell indicated Shorts is a big part of the plan going forward. The team drafted WRs Marqise Lee and Allen Robinson, but Caldwell said it 'was to compliment Cecil, not replace him.'
Huddle Up: A little Shorts news if you own him in a dynasty league. Shorts is in the final season of his contract, but it sounds like the Jaguars view him as part of the solution once Blake Bortles is at quarterback. The question, of course, is are they holding a spot for Justin Blackmon as well?
Andre Ellington - RB - Arizona Cardinals
(7/26/2014 1:08pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington is ready to be the bell cow in the offense, according to head coach Bruce Arians. The big thing for Ellington will be his development as a pass catcher.
Huddle Up: Ellington has yet to see more than 15 carries in an NFL game, but he added weight this offseason in anticipation of a larger workload. The Cardinals have Stepfan Taylor and Jonathan Dwyer to run between the tackles so they may not have to overwork Ellington there, but the plan is for Ellington to see 20-plus touches on a regular basis. Fantasy owners are salivating, though the question remains whether or not he can hold up to such a workload.
Tyrann Mathieu - S - Arizona Cardinals
(7/26/2014 1:00pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) said he is about six to eight weeks away from being able to play in a game.
Huddle Up: The hope is that Mathieu is back on the field by early October, so plan your fantasy drafting of the Cardinals and/or Mathieu as an IDP accordingly.
Fred Jackson - RB - Buffalo Bills
(7/26/2014 1:00pm et)  Share this news item on Facebook! Tweet this news item!
Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (leg) suffered a lower leg injury during practice Friday, July 25.
Huddle Up: Meanwhile Bryce Brown has looked great in the early going. It's too early in camp to be overly concerned about Jackson's injury, but if he's out of the lineup and Brown is on the field looking good it could shuffle the Bills' backfield committee.
