The New England Patriots released TE Zach Sudfeld Thursday, Oct. 3.

Huddle Up: Could this be the telling sign that Rob Gronkowski's debut is at hand? Maybe so, but in the meantime, it's the close of a much-disappointing chapter with Sudfeld, a first-team member of the preseason all-hype team who failed to even record a reception in 4 games.

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept 11, and is questionable for Week 2.

Huddle Up: That's better than "doubtful," and the Patriots are losing offensive weapons like it's their job. Sudfeld figures to have some sort of bounce-back week after laying an egg last week, assuming he can play and stay on the field.

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld (hamstring) is dealing with a pulled hamstring and his status for Week 2 is uncertain at this point.

Huddle Up: It's just about time to cut bait with Sudfeld, whose preseason star has all but been snuffed out. He got just nine pass routes in to Michael Hoomanawanui's 25 yesterday, and Rob Gronkowski is due back any week now.

New England Patriots TEs Zach Sudfeld and Jake Ballard and appear to have solid grips on roster spots at this point.

Huddle Up: That likely leaves veterans Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui competing for the final TE roster spot, at least until Rob Gronkowski is able to play. Right now, though, Sudfeld is the N.E. fantasy TE you want to start the season, and he'd be a good fit if you already have Gronk in a larger league.

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfield could have a big role on offense this season because his size has allowed him to become a tremendous red zone target during practice and preseason games. Sudfeld could also be used in one-tight end sets because his blocking ability has improved since training camp started.

Huddle Up: The hype train has left the station for Sudfeld, who is no longer just a Gronkowski filler. It looks like he will take over Aaron Hernandez's role as the second tight end, albeit we don't think he will be taking handoffs anytime soon. That means he could have some lasting value for your fantasy team.

New England Patriots TE Zach Sudfeld has been running exclusively with the first-team offense in practice, and he has reportedly been catching everything thrown his way.

Huddle Up: Sudfeld has great hands and he was one of the best route running tight ends coming out of college but he still needs to get stronger. However, the Patriots have little else at tight end right now if Rob Gronkowski misses games while recovering from back surgery. Sudfeld is on the radar as a fantasy sleeper but his value will go down significantly if Gronk is ready to go by Week 1.
