New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller received some praise from head coach Sean Payton after the team was surprised to be able to land him in free agency. 'His cutup is unbelievable,' Payton said of Spiller. 'And I'm not talking about last season because I think it became challenging, but you go back a couple of years and start looking at his screen reel, a sweep reel, a return reel.'

Huddle Up: Spiller will be a nice fit in the Big Easy as a complement to lead back Mark Ingram, and should easily see his biggest improvement as a pass catcher after averaging a modest 31.6 receptions per season during his five years in Buffalo.

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints Friday, March 13.

Huddle Up: Spiller, who had only 668 rushes in his first five seasons, is an upgrade over the recently released Pierre Thomas and will be a strong complement for the recently re-signed Mark Ingram. That said, it's shaping up as the usual RBBC in NOLA with Khiry Robinson also in the mix.

  • Posted: 3/12/2015 11:42am ET

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, March 12, according to a league source.

Huddle Up: Two things to keep in mind here: The Saints are not exactly brimming with cap cash, and they just re-upped with Mark Ingram on a new deal. That said, an Ingram-Spiller tandem would be a good all-around fit if the Saints can make it work financially.

  • Posted: 3/3/2015 8:41pm ET

Buffalo Bills free-agent RB C.J. Spiller said Tuesday, March 3, that the Bills called him and thanked him for his services. In summary, Spiller won't be coming back to the Bills next season, as if the impending acquisition of RB LeSean McCoy wasn't enough proof.

Huddle Up: Spiller is only 27 and still has a good amount of tread left on his tires with just 668 carries in five seasons. Still, at 5-11 and 194 pounds, he may be best suited for a complementary, change-of-pace role instead of a full-time starting No. 1 RB gig, and it'll be interesting to see where he lands given the overloaded free-agent RB market and the well-stocked 2015 RB draft class.

  • Posted: 2/25/2015 12:49am ET

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller made it very clear that he's a fan of Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Gailey coached Spiller from 2010 to 2012 with the Bills. 'His offense is going to be very creative,' Spiller said. 'He's going put his players in the best situations to win matchups. Just a humble guy. First class. Goes about his business the right way. He's going to treat his men like men.' The Jets have a hole at running back with RBs Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell poised to leave.

Huddle Up: A Spiller-Gailey reunion is seemingly one of the more plausible rumored free-agency pairings, and in the least could fulfill the Bills' obligations in the Rex Ryan trade.

  • Posted: 2/8/2015 4:27pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller has had his 2015 contract year voided. Assuming no franchise or transition tag, Spiller hits free agency on Tuesday, March 10, when the league year opens.

Huddle Up: Spiller almost certainly will be allowed to test free agency, and while the RB $$$ aren't what they used to be, Spiller will still only be 28 by the time next season rolls around and hasn't had too much wear and tear, averaging only 133.6 rushes over his five seasons.

  • Posted: 1/16/2015 11:00pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller, who will be a free agent this offseason, could be eyeing a move to the New York Jets, where he could be reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey. Spiller could be targeted if Gailey gets the job in New York after Spiller had 1,703 total yards, eight touchdowns and 43 catches in 2012 with Gailey. "There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense," Spiller said. "So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I'd be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it'd be dumb not to give it serious thought."

Huddle Up: N.Y. is only one of several possible landing spots for Spiller, a versatile back who is coming off an injury-shortened season will still only be 28 by the time next season rolls around. Stay tuned ...

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller is a player the Bills will try to re-sign this offseason, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Huddle Up: Spiller was limited to nine games and a career-low 97 touches this past season due to injury, and with Fred Jackson not getting any younger, it would behoove the Bills to have as much proven RB help around as possible with Rex Ryan bringing what figures to be a ground-heavy scheme to Orchard Park.

  • Posted: 1/12/2015 5:58pm ET

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller said he likes the team's hiring of head coach Rex Ryan, because Ryan likes to run the ball and have a physical offense.

Huddle Up: If that's the case Spiller should also like Ryan's decision to bring aboard Greg Roman as the team's offensive coordinator. However, the most important guy in Spiller's career thus far has been the team doctor; that will need to change for CJ to have any fantasy relevance regardless of coach.

  • Posted: 12/24/2014 1:13am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller has just a 30% chance to re-sign with the team as an unrestricted free agent during the offseason, according to Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News. 'The writing was on the wall for Spiller the moment the Bills traded for running back Bryce Brown in May, and nothing that has happened this season makes it any more likely the team's 2010 first-round pick would return for a sixth season,' Skurski wrote.

Huddle Up: Spiller certainly appears to have run his course in Buffalo, but he's only 27 and should find a fairly decent market for his services in the offseason.

  • Posted: 12/19/2014 3:46pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) has been added to the active roster and is probable for Week 16 against the Oakland Raiders.

Huddle Up: Spiller looks like he'll play for the first time since Week 7, but he's certainly a fantasy gamble at best as it's unlikely he'll assume a usable workload right off the bat. Fred Jackson still should receive the bulk of the touches, but they figure to be down as well given the extra backfield mouth to feed.

  • Posted: 12/17/2014 9:08pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) has not yet been added to the active roster from the short-term Reserve/Injured list. The Bills must add him by Dec. 24, but they must make that move by Saturday, Dec. 20, if they want him to be eligible to play in Week 16 against the Oakland Raiders. Spiller was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and he said he's feeling good. The team hasn't made a decision on whether he'll play against the Raiders.

Huddle Up: Even if Spiller plays he'll be hard to trust in Fantasy Super Bowls. Spiller enters a crowded Bills backfield and he's going to be on a snap count in his first game back. Only owners really struggling for a Flex option should turn to Spiller if he's active.

  • Posted: 12/17/2014 4:33pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Huddle Up: Spiller has returned to the 53-man roster following his 2-month injury absence, but he's likely going to need to be a full-practice participant before he's declared active and cleared to play Sunday in Oakland.

  • Posted: 12/15/2014 3:57pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder) will reclaim a roster spot this week, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Spiller has been cleared and it will be decided if he plays based on how he practices, Marrone added.

Huddle Up: If Spiller plays, he won't have much fantasy value even in a good matchup against the Raiders. Spiller joins a crowded backfield and will likely be on a snap count. He'll be much too risky for owners to insert into lineups for Fantasy Super Bowls.

  • Posted: 12/1/2014 8:46pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (shoulder), who is on the short-term Reserve/Injured list, has been making good progress in his effort to return before the end of the season, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Spiller can resume practicing with the team Wednesday, Dec. 3, if he's ready. He won't be able to return until Week 16 against the Oakland Raiders, however.

Huddle Up: Spiller could return in time for those playing in the fantasy semifinal or championship rounds, but if you've made it that far it's unlikely you'd need to roll the dice on on a RB coming off a 2-month layoff.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 2:47pm ET

The Buffalo Bills placed RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) on short-term Reserve/Injured Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Huddle Up: Spiller's season may not technically be over, but for the majority of fantasy purposes it is as he wouldn't be able to play until Week 17 at the earliest, provided all goes well with his recovery.

  • Posted: 10/20/2014 10:44am ET

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (collarbone) is out for the season, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Spiller's injury came after Fred Jackson had already exited the game with a groin injury, leaving the Bills with only Anthony Dixon at running back. As there were already trade rumors regarding Spiller, he may have played his last game in a Bills' uniform.

  • Posted: 10/17/2014 10:14am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller is pressing, which presents part of his problems right now, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Spiller is looking to hit the proverbial home run with every play.

Huddle Up: Spiller is a home-run back whose opportunities have been cut dramatically; what did you expect him to do? Unless Spiller is dealt before the upcoming deadline or there's a reshuffling of duties in the Bills' backfield, it's difficult to see anything changing in Buffalo--and until Spiller actually starts hitting some home runs, that's bad news for his fantasy prospects.

  • Posted: 10/16/2014 9:58am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller said he's not worried at all about playing just 12 snaps in Week 6. "I always said you take advantage when you're in there, do everything you possibly can to make plays for your team," Spiller said. "So I'm not caught up in how many snaps I get. Obviously you want to play more, but certain things happen throughout the game, and you have to go to different packages. I'm not concerned."

Huddle Up: Spiller is doing a fine job of toeing the company line, but the reduction in touches is taking a big bite out of his fantasy value.

  • Posted: 10/13/2014 10:42am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller played just 12 offensive snaps Sunday, Oct. 12, and had six rushes for 19 yards.

Huddle Up: A banged up Fred Jackson didn't see a whole lot more work, with 10 carries and four receptions, but he was clearly on the field much more frequently than Spiller. Spiller is still a home run threat, but right now he's basically a pinch hitter with limited opportunities.

  • Posted: 10/7/2014 9:31pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller managed just four yards on six first-down carries in Week 5. For the year, he has nine negative runs and is averaging a career-low 3.5 yards per carry.

Huddle Up: Spiller only has 1 TD so far and has been outgained, in terms of total yards, in 4 of 5 games this season by veteran backfield mate Fred Jackson, who is averaging 4.7 yards a carry. Keep your fantasy expectations lowered until you start to see Spiller's stats start trending in the other direction.

  • Posted: 9/4/2014 2:09pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller is the team's primary kickoff returner.

Huddle Up: This likely isn't what Spiller owners had in mind when hoping for an increased workload this season. Spiller last returned kicks full time in his rookie season of 2010, and -- make of it what you will -- had a career-low 98 offensive touches that season.

  • Posted: 8/13/2014 7:36pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller has not been talked about with other teams, according to general manager Doug Whaley. "Again, no one, I'll tell you guys and you know I'm a straight shooter. We have not been contacted by any teams. I can probably see where people see our depth at running back and try to connect the dots with teams that don't have depth, but, again, nobody has contacted us," Whalen said.

Huddle Up: Spiller is a free agent at the end of the season and with Bryce Brown waiting in the wings, this could be his last year in Buffalo. However, unless a strong offer comes the Bills way in the next couple of weeks, expect Spiller to remain with the team for the 2014 season as part of a talented backfield committee. Spiller is currently a bit overvalued with an ADP of late Round 3.

  • Posted: 7/16/2014 12:34am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller will likely touch the ball 20 times per game if the offense is operating efficiently, according to BuffaloBills.com.

Huddle Up: Spiller has averaged 15.6 touches per game in each of the past 2 seasons, and unless Fred Jackson (15.8 per outing in 2013) misses a significant portion of the season, it's going to be tough for Spiller to hit that mark, especially considering that FA signee Bryce Brown also is now in the mix.

  • Posted: 7/15/2014 3:06am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller recently said there's a noticeable difference in the team's running game with a year of experience under the new offensive system. At the same time, Spiller admitted there's still work to be done before the season starts.

Huddle Up: It makes sense that if the team is more comfortable with the system they'll be able to run it more efficiently. The Bills ran the ball well last season, so if Spiller can stay on the field maybe he'll finally live up to the fantasy hype that's surrounded him since he was a first-round pick a few years back.

  • Posted: 5/30/2014 6:25pm ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) said he feels great while taking part in organized team activities this week. Spiller wasn't the same after battling through an ankle injury for most of last season. "I don't feel nothing, I feel great," said Spiller. "This is the best I've felt since 2012 when I had that great year. The ankle feels wonderful. I just have to keep doing what I need to do to stay healthy this whole season and try to go out there and make plays."

Huddle Up: No question, a healthy Spiller makes for a happy fantasy owner. And as he's seemingly recovered from the issue that plagued him last year, that's a good place to start. We'll see how long it lasts.

  • Posted: 5/3/2014 12:04am ET

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller said there is no timetable for when contract extension talks with the team will start but is interested in staying with the team. Spiller is entering the final year of his contract but will have to hire a new agent before talks can begin.

Huddle Up: Given the way Spiller has tended to get nicked, it is hardly a surprise the Bills are in no rush to commit long-term money. The current market for running backs doesn't help Spiller either, but he could capitalize by more consistently making the big plays he's known for and driving up his price... or at least finding a way to stay on the field.
