San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) missed his sixth consecutive game in Week 8 Thursday, Oct. 23, against the Denver Broncos, but he could return to practice as early as Monday, Oct. 27. However, Mathews is nearing a return and unlikely to miss more than one additional game, if that. Mathews worked out before the game Thursday, and his right knee was stable and he appeared conditioned.

Huddle Up: Mathews is nearing a return and will resume his place atop the Chargers depth chart, with Branden Oliver taking over Danny Woodhead's role as the pass catching back. Mathews will be a RB2 once he's back in the lineup.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 6:20pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 21, and is not expected to play Thursday, Oct. 23, against the Denver Broncos.

Huddle Up: A much more likely return date for Mathews is Week 9 as the Chargers will have 10 days after Thursday's night contest to prepare for their Nov. 2 game in Miami.

  • Posted: 10/16/2014 9:58am ET

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) continues to rehab from a Sept. 14 injury to his right knee, but he will not play in Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and it might not be Week 8 against the Denver Broncos in a game Thursday, Oct. 23.

Huddle Up: With the Chargers playing on a short week following this weekend's action it wouldn't be at all surprising to see Mathews miss at least the next two contests. Besides, Branden Oliver is doing just fine, thank you.

  • Posted: 10/9/2014 5:56pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) has not started running since he suffered his medial collateral ligament injury in Week 2. There is still a chance Mathews is able to return before the end of the month.

Huddle Up: Mathews hasn't played since Week 2, and while they'd like to have him back for the Oct. 23 showdown against the Broncos, they're not going to rush him back if Branden Oliver can show Sunday that his Week 5 breakout (182 total yards, 2 TDs) was no flash in the pan.

  • Posted: 10/9/2014 12:07am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Huddle Up: Mathews isn't expected to play this week. That would leave Branden Oliver as a RB2/flex play option against the Raiders. Donald Brown is recovering from a concussion but Oliver will see more touches than him this week. Brown has 107 yards on 50 carries since Mathews was injured.

  • Posted: 10/6/2014 10:36am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is likely out another two weeks with a sprained knee.

Huddle Up: The Chargers might be tempted to rush Mathews back if Branden Oliver hadn't played so well last weekend, what with both Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown sidelined. Instead... hey, Ryan, take your time.

  • Posted: 9/15/2014 1:27pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his knee in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, according to a source. Mathews could miss four to five weeks, although he's hoping to return before that.

Huddle Up: Donald Brown will replace Mathews and he should see roughly 15 touches a game. Brown is a high-priority waiver wire addition this week.

  • Posted: 9/14/2014 8:14pm ET

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (knee) is scheduled to undergo an MRI for his injured knee, according to a source. There is concern he might have a sprained medial collateral ligament.

Huddle Up: Mathews was carted off in the third quarter and the injury didn't look good. Donald Brown would see an expanded role if Mathews is out long-term. Brown will be a top waiver wire pickup this week.

  • Posted: 6/18/2014 11:32am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews showed quick cuts and bursts while running at minicamp Tuesday, June 17. He also appears to have added muscle in the offseason, and he's weighing 222 pounds, which is up seven pounds from last August.

Huddle Up: Mathews was an underappreciated fantasy contributor last season after a couple years of disappointing his owners. Expectations haven't been raised too high, and if Mathews' additional bulk allows him to stay on the field he'll be a value fantasy contributor again this year.

  • Posted: 5/28/2014 12:29am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews was not present at organized team activities Tuesday, May 27, so RBs Danny Woodhead, Donald Brown and Branden Oliver took handoffs and caught passes instead.

Huddle Up: Don't get too excited as this wasn't a mandatory practice. Chargers coach Mike McCoy certainly isn't, even though he refused to say why the starting RB didn't show.

  • Posted: 3/20/2014 7:47pm ET

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said that RB Ryan Mathews remains the team's every-down back despite the signing of RB Donald Brown in free agency. "We know Ryan is our bell cow," Telesco said. "He's our No. 1 back. He had an excellent year last year. And we all know what Danny Woodhead can do in his role. We saw that for 16 games last year. And we think Donald can come in and add to that, too, and give us some different options. And a different style, too. The more weapons we can have for Philip Rivers, the better."

Huddle Up: Aside from receiving, Mathews is coming off a career season almost across the board, but Brown's presence figures to cut into his workload even if Mathews remains the starter and gets the majority of the carries.

  • Posted: 1/12/2014 11:07pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) started Sunday's AFC divisional playoff game against the Denver Broncos but finished with only 5 carries for 26 yards in a 24-17 loss.

Huddle Up: As feared, Mathews was simply too banged up to be effective after not practicing all week and didn't play in the second half. But even though the season ended on a down note for Mathews, he did start every game and finished with a career-high 1,255 rushing yards and 7 total TDs.

  • Posted: 1/12/2014 3:32pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews is active for the team's AFC divisional- round playoff game in Denver on Sunday, Jan. 12.

Huddle Up: Mathews will give it a go after leaving last week's wild-card game early and not practicing all week. He had 127 rushing yards and a TD on a career-high 29 carries in the Bolts' Week 15 win in Denver, but there remain questions regarding his workload and effectiveness playing through the obviously nagging injury.

  • Posted: 1/12/2014 3:00pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to play in the team's divisional round game Sunday, Jan. 12.

Huddle Up: It's looking somewhat promising, but definitely stay tuned as the RB will test his ankle on-field Sunday afternoon before any final status decision is made.

  • Posted: 1/11/2014 12:55pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was wearing a brace Friday, Jan. 10, and gingerly left the practice field on his way to the locker room. He did not practice all week and is questionable for the divisional round game against the Denver Broncos. Mathews had just one carry in the second half of the wild card win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week and finished with 13 carries for 52 yards. 'The more rest you get, the better everything gets,' he said. 'It is only a week, so I'm just going to do what I can.' The Chargers expect Mathews to do his best to play this Sunday.

Huddle Up: Mathews is listed as questionable and expected to at least give it a go, but given his situation expect Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown to handle most of the Chargers' backfield workload.

  • Posted: 1/9/2014 3:49pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is not participating in practice Thursday, Jan. 9.

Huddle Up: Mathews, who hasn't missed a game all season, insists he'll play Sunday and might have to give it a go after not practicing all week. This appears headed toward a game-day decision.

  • Posted: 1/6/2014 11:39am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is hoping to play in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game. He missed most of the second half of the Wild Card playoff game due to the injury.

Huddle Up: Just as Mathews' quietly solid fantasy season was about to push aside memories of previous frustration, he short-changes those who had put any fantasy faith in him. Danny Woodhead and Ronnie Brown capably filled in against the Bengals and would be asked to do so again in Denver if Mathews' ankle prevents him from playing this weekend.

  • Posted: 1/5/2014 10:51pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) emerged from the locker room after the AFC Wild Card game against the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday, Jan. 5, wearing a protective walking boot on his left foot.

Huddle Up: As suspected, it sounds as if Mathews re-aggravated his bothersome ankle Sunday and finished with only 13 rushes for 52 yards after concluding the regular season with 4 straight games with 24 or more carries. Keep an eye on his status this week in practice as the Bolts prepare for a divisional-round date in Denver.

  • Posted: 1/5/2014 4:57pm ET

Ryan Mathews rushed 13 times for 52 yards and added 2 catches for 12 more yards Sunday, Jan. 5 in the San Diego Chargers' 27-10 wild-card playoff win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Huddle Up: Mathews did most of his work in the first half, and actually finished as the Bolts' third leading rusher as Ronnie Brown (8-77, TD) and Danny Woodhead (15-54, TD) handled the bulk of the second-half touches. CBS' Tracy Wolfson reported the Chargers' said Mathews decreased second-half role was a normal part of the the team's RB rotation, but there is ample speculation that Mathews may have re- aggravated his lingering ankle injury.

  • Posted: 1/3/2014 5:11pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was limited in practice Friday, Jan. 3, but is probable for the team's Wild Card game this weekend.

Huddle Up: Mathews has been hampered by the ankle injury all week, but the expectation all along was that he would play. Should he tweak the injury in-game, Danny Woodhead's workload would increase.

  • Posted: 1/2/2014 5:21pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Jan. 2. He's expected to return to the practice field Friday.

Huddle Up: Mathews is on the same track as last week with the RB sitting out practice early in the week and then returning Friday. It definitely didn't affect him in Week 17 with Mathews rushing for a season-high 144 yards on 24 carries -- his 3rd 100-yard rushing game in his last 4 outings -- but he'll find the going a little tougher this Sunday in Cincy.

  • Posted: 12/30/2013 11:07am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews had a career-high 144 rushing yards in Week 17.

Huddle Up: After burning fantasy owners through the first three seasons of his career Mathews quietly became a reliable back in 2013, hitting career bests in games played, carries, and rushing yardage. He either scored or rushed for 100 yards (or both) in four straight games to end the season, hitting those milestones in seven of his last eight and nine of his last 11 games.

  • Posted: 12/27/2013 10:12pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) was limited in practice Friday, Dec. 27, but is probable for Week 17.

Huddle Up: Mathews finally got on the practice field Friday, and he's there if you need him to fill a RB or flex spot Sunday.

  • Posted: 12/27/2013 12:04am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 26.

Huddle Up: Mathews has missed both of the team's practices this week but the Chargers are still planning on him starting Sunday. See what develops Friday.

  • Posted: 12/25/2013 11:30pm ET

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Huddle Up: Mathews is expected to play this week against a Chiefs' defense that will likely be sitting a majority of its starters. If healthy, Mathews is in line for a big game on Sunday.

  • Posted: 12/25/2013 5:11pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) is expected to play in the Week 17 finale, despite an ankle injury that had him in a walking boot after the Week 16 game. This would be the first time he has played all 16 games in his four-year career.

Huddle Up: He has been quite good this season, and the Chiefs might be sitting their starters.

  • Posted: 12/23/2013 12:49am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (ankle) suffered a left ankle injury in the fourth quarter of the Week 16 game against the Oakland Raiders. Mathews went to the locker room, returned and re-entered the game. However, after the game he was wearing a protective boot over his left foot.

Huddle Up: Walking boots are never good signs, but hopefully it's precautionary. Mathews has done a nice job this year, and he has stayed healthy. Watch his status throughout the week.

  • Posted: 12/13/2013 12:17am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews rushed 29 times for a season-high128 yards and a TD on Thursday, Dec. 12 in a 27-20 win over the host Denver Broncos.

Huddle Up: Mathews has paid off handsomely for those rolling with him in the fantasy playoffs as he had his second straight game with 100 rushing yards and a TD. He also matched his career high in carries (29) for the second straight week. He figures to keep getting work as the Bolts have obviously benefitted from some offensive balance in their late-season playoff push.

  • Posted: 12/11/2013 12:42am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews has four 100-yard rushing games this season, and only Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (five) and Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy (five) have more. He carried the ball 30 times in the Week 14 game against the New York Giants, and he is more than happy with the extra workload. 'I'm a firm believer of 'go as long as you can',' head coach Mike McCoy said. 'I've got no problem with the running back (handling a high volume.'

Huddle Up: Even more impressive, Mathews hasn't missed a game and has quadrupled his 2012 rushing TD total (4-1) while sharing the backfield load with newcomer Danny Woodhead. He's still not a dependable week-in and week-out No. 1 RB, but he's proven to be well worth that mid-round fantasy pick.

  • Posted: 11/29/2013 11:42am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) is expected to play in the team's Week 13 game.

Huddle Up: Mathews tweaked his hamstring Week 12 and did not return to action. He's been limited during the practice week, but indications now are that he'll be on the field Sunday so fantasy owners can plan accordingly.

  • Posted: 11/28/2013 10:48pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) was limited during practice Thursday, Nov. 28.

Huddle Up: Mathews was back at practice after missing workouts on Wednesday and is expected to play in Week 13 vs. the Bengals. Mathews, however, has been dealing the hammy off and on for a few weeks now, and fantasy GMs might want to consider a more dependable RB option with the stakes now higher.

  • Posted: 11/27/2013 6:51pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) missed practice Wednesday, Nov. 27, after aggravating his hamstring ailment in Week 12. Head coach Mike McCoy said Mathews still has a chance to play in Week 13 versus the Cincinnati Bengals, though.

Huddle Up: If Mathews can't go, Ronnie Brown will see an increase in touches and is worth flex consideration in deeper leagues. However, Mathews' absence would mean a bigger workload for Danny Woodhead as well, so Brown would be a risky play.

  • Posted: 11/25/2013 11:14am ET

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) aggravated his hamstring injury in the third quarter of the Week 12 game.

Huddle Up: Mathews has been playing well this season, but a hamstring issue can be troublesome. Keep an eye on Mathews' practice status heading into Week 13. Danny Woodhead would be in line for an uptick in workload.

  • Posted: 11/25/2013 1:09am ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) left the Week 12 game against the Kansas City Chiefs due to a hamstring injury.

Huddle Up: It took much longer than most anticipated, but Mathews has landed on the injured list. Hopefully it's not too serious; keep an eye on his status throughout the week.

  • Posted: 11/15/2013 5:04pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 15, and is listed probable for Week 11.

Huddle Up: There's seemingly always a question mark hovering over Mathews, but for now, consider him good to go for what appears to be a juicy matchup against the Dolphins.

  • Posted: 11/14/2013 1:17pm ET

San Diego Chargers RB Ryan Mathews (hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday, Nov. 13.

Huddle Up: Mathews missed some time in the first quarter of the Week 10 loss to the Broncos but returned and finished with 61 total yards and a rushing score. Danny Woodhead remains very involved in the Bolts' RB picture, but Mathews should have some success Sunday against a Miami defense surrendering the second-most fantasy points to opposing RBs.

  • Posted: 11/7/2013 10:07pm ET

San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt said the team still has confidence in RB Ryan Mathews despite giving him only one touch in the second half of their Week 9 defeat at the hands of the Washington Redskins. 'I feel great about Ryan,' Whisenhunt said. 'There has never been any indication that we haven't felt great about Ryan. Last time I checked, he's the only back in the league this year that's had two consecutive 100-yard games. I don't understand why you wouldn't feel good about him. We have complete confidence in him. In my mind, he is a good football player.' Whisenhunt hinted that the game plan called for something else, especially when the team was near the goal line with time expiring.

Huddle Up: Week 9 was brutal (34 yards on 7 touches) for Mathews' fantasy owners who were just starting to get excited about the RB with Mathews coming in off back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. The Bolts will likely need more of Mathews if they hope to control the clock against Peyton Manning & Co. this Sunday.
