Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) may never be able to play football again after two surgeries on a fractured and dislocated hip in as many seasons.

Huddle Up: Too soon to rule out Pitta for good, but this latest injury is definitely a career-threatener.

The Baltimore Ravens placed TE Dennis Pitta (hip) on Reserve/Injured Tuesday, Sept. 23, officially ending the tight end's season.

Huddle Up: Rugged turn of events for Pitta, who went down on a non-contact play Sunday. Look for Owen Daniels, who was with offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak in Houston, to assume most of the TE workload. Daniels had a big Week 2 with a pair of TD grabs but has only 5 receptions for 42 yards in the Ravens' other 2 contests.

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) also has a fracture in his right hip, according to a source. Pitta will likely undergo surgery for the dislocated and fractured hip.

Huddle Up: Pitta will miss the rest of the 2014 season. Owen Daniels is now the Ravens starting tight end. He's nothing more than a middling TE2, although his value increases in TD heavy leagues.

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip) suffered a dislocated hip in the Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns. He will have tests Monday, Sept. 22, to check for a possible fracture.

Huddle Up: Owen Daniels will be the Ravens starting tight end if Pitta misses time. Daniels is nothing more than a TE2 but he has more value in TD heavy leagues.

Baltimore Ravens TE Dennis Pitta has been in constant motion in formations during the offseason practices. He's expected to line up in tight end alignments, split out wide and in the backfield.

Huddle Up: This sounds good for Pitta's fantasy value, but no need to push him up between Gronk and Graham just yet; after all, the Ravens still have Gary Kubiak favorite Owen Daniels and rookie Crockett Gilmore. He's solid with upside, but that puts him in a big pile of TEs on fantasy draft day.

  • Posted: 2/28/2014 6:17pm ET

The Baltimore Ravens re-signed TE Dennis Pitta to a five-year contract extension worth $32 million Friday, Feb. 28.

Huddle Up: The Ravens thus avoid a possible TE/WR tag showdown with Pitta, whose deal works out to be at or above the projected yearly franchise tag cost for a tight end. Your move, Saints and Jimmy Graham.

  • Posted: 2/24/2014 2:06pm ET

The Baltimore Ravens have made negotiations with TE Dennis Pitta a major priority.

Huddle Up: The Ravens would prefer to avoid a franchise tag fight with Pitta, who wants to be tagged--or at least paid--like a wide receiver, so the hope is that intensified negotiations will keep Pitta in Baltimore without such a squabble.

The Baltimore Ravens' evaluation of whether to use the franchise tag on free-agent TE Dennis Pitta is complicated by the uncertainty of exactly how much it would cost. It's uncertain if Pitta would fall under the franchise tag number for a tight end or a wide receiver, which is a difference of nearly $5 million. Pitta ran 79.7 percent of his routes last year out of the slot, and that was the highest rate among qualifying tight ends.

Huddle Up: Certainly, Pitta's agent will argue that he be paid like a wideout, while the team would prefer to pay him like a tight end. The Ravens experienced a similar "tweener" situation with Terrell Suggs a few years back; expect the Baltimore front office to resolve the situation in a similar fashion before having their hand forced by some sort of league ruling on Pitta's position.

  • Posted: 2/16/2014 2:45pm ET

The Baltimore Ravens probably will place the franchise tag on impending free-agent TE Dennis Pitta if they are not able to reach a long-term deal with him.

Huddle Up: Pitta was limited to 4 games last season while the Ravens' offense struggled. Now that's far from the only reason, but it does underscore the TE's value to Joe Flacco and the passing attack, so definitely look for the Ravens to keep him around, one way or the other.

The New England Patriots could pursue Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent TE Dennis Pitta this offseason if he becomes available in the free-agent market.

Huddle Up: It's hard to see the Ravens letting the productive Pitta walk, but if he does, the Pats certainly would like to return to their 1-2 TE punch days or at least have a capable fill-in on hand in the strong likelihood that Rob Gronkowski's injury issues continue.

  • Posted: 1/28/2014 3:10am ET

Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak said he has a high opinion on impending free-agent TE Dennis Pitta and believes he will be a big part of the offense next season.

Huddle Up: If you enjoyed Owen Daniels' production in Houston, you're sure to like what Pitta can do for Kubiak in Baltimore--assuming he re-signs, which appears to be high on Kubiak's priority list.
