The New England Patriots worked out free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Eagles) Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Huddle Up: New England has been a stop on the preseason itineraries of just about all the big-name free agents, including Plaxico Burress, Jeff Demps and now Kafka. Second-year QB Ryan Mallett recently was elevated to the Pats' No. 2 spot behind Tom Brady, but Kafka's athleticism is alluring. If he doesn't hook on with the Pats, expect him to land somewhere else soon.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of four teams reportedly interested in free-agent QB Mike Kafka (Eagles).

Huddle Up: Top backup Brady Quinn suffered an undisclosed injury in the preseason finale, and K.C. doesn't know if he'll be able to practice come Monday. That only leaves only second-year QB Ricky Stanzi behind Matt Cassel, but he could be let go if the Chiefs land Kafka.

Updating a previous report, the Philadelphia Eagles released QB Mike Kafka after not being able to find a trade partner Friday, Aug. 31.

Huddle Up: Kafka, a backup in Philly the past 2 seasons, fractured his hand Aug. 9 and missed most of the preseason. That opened the door for third-round pick Nick Foles and former Buffalo Bill Trent Edwards to have standout preseasons and lock down roster spots as Michael Vick's backups.

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka (hand) was able to take a few reps in practice Monday, Aug. 27. It was his first time on the field since suffering a fractured left hand Aug. 9. He did not indicate whether or not he will see playing time in the team's preseason finale Thursday, Aug. 30. Head coach Andy Reid said he will decide after practice Wednesday, Aug. 29, whether or not Kafka will participate in the game.

Huddle Up: While Kafka has been out, it's opened the door for rookie third-round pick Nick Foles, and the University of Arizona product has shined under the preseason lights, completing 63 percent of his passes for 507 yards and an NFL exhibition-leading 6 TDs. Nothing's been made official, but the rookie looks as if he's supplanted Kafka as Philly's backup QB.
