Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton and the passing game must improve, but offensive coordinator Hue Jackson took some of the blame for Dalton's struggles in 2014. 'I'll be the first to tell all of you that I don't think I did a good enough job of getting him to where I think he needs to be,' Jackson said. 'That's one of my biggest responsibilities in my mind this upcoming year. He played well at times. There were times where there was inconsistency, and I've got to get him over that hump.' Jackson knows Dalton must cut down on his turnovers, and the infusion of healthy receivers next year should help.

Huddle Up: Yeah, inconsistency is still a problem with Dalton, but thanks largely to his battered pass-catching corps last season, Dalton threw for a career-low 19 TD passes and matched his career low with 3,398 passing yards. Even if does show some regular-season statistical improvement, though, his future in Cincy likely depends on if he's able to get the Bengals over the playoff hump.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton is not expected to enter next season with competition at quarterback, as the Bengals are not expected to draft another quarterback this year. "He's our guy, and we're not going to shy away from that," says offensive coordinator Hue Jackson of Dalton, and quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese offers: "He was better with the intangibles this year and the ball was better coming out of his hand. You could see that right away when he came back from the last offseason." Jackson is a fan of backup QB Jason Campbell, and the team was impressed with young QB A.J. McCarron.

Huddle Up: Dalton hit career lows with 481 attempts, 3,389 passing yards and 19 TDs this past season as the Bengals shifted to a more ground-oriented approach. It also must be noted that No. 1 WR A.J. Green, wideout Marvin Jones and TE Tyler Eifert all missed time as well with the latter two missing essentially the whole season. In summary, to be near enough to move him out of QB2 territory.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton showed improvement this season and is expected to become a better quarterback next season, according to head coach Marvin Lewis. Lewis said he is glad that Dalton is on the team.

Huddle Up: Dalton's 0-4 playoff record aside, the QB's regular-season numbers also took a dip this past year as he thew a career-low 19 TD passes and matched his career low with 3,398 passing yards while posting his second-worst passer rating (83.5). It sounds Dalton is in line to return for his fifth season as the Cincy starter, but that could change of course, if the Bengals decide that Lewis and HIS 0-5 postseason record are no longer good enough.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (illness) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 25.

Huddle Up: Nothing but a day off Wednesday with the flu for Dalton, who should be good to go by the time Sunday night's showdown with the Steelers rolls around.

  • Posted: 11/7/2014 12:57pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton's 30.3 completion percentage Thursday, Nov. 6, is the worst completion percentage in a game with at least 25 attempts in franchise history.

Huddle Up: Dalton struggled to be sure, but he wasn't helped by more than a few drops from the Cincy receivers. Also working against Dalton: Joe Haden playing like vintage Joe Haden instead of the imposter we've seen much of this year, and the positive domino effect that had on the Browns' secondary.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton completed 10-of-33 passes for 86 yards and three interceptions Thursday, Nov. 6 in a 24-3 home loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Huddle Up: Dalton was simply horrific, compiling the lowest completion percentage (30.3) and passer rating (2.0) and the second-lowest yardage total of his 56 career regular-season starts, and was pulled in favor of Jason Campbell in the fourth quarter. As a result, it was predictably a struggle for WRs A.J. Green (3-23 on 10 targets) and Mohamed Sanu (2-20 on 7 targets) as the Bengals' offense was held without a TD for the second time in four games. Dalton now has 8 TD passes and nine interceptions in 9 games this season, and the restlessness in Cincy is growing palpable.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has not been hit once on 63 dropbacks so far this season.

Huddle Up: Pressure, as it is with most QBs, has been especially bothersome to Dalton. Still he's been kept clean and Dalton's responded with a 40-of-61 performance, 553 yards and a pair of TDs without a turnover against the Ravens and Falcons. Tougher tests loom, though, against the Patriots and Panthers after the team's Week 4 bye.

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has agreed to a six-year, $115 million extension with the team. The league hasn't received the paperwork for the deal yet, but it is expected to be finalized Monday, Aug. 4.

Huddle Up: The contract is mostly front-loaded, with Dalton earning $17 million guaranteed and a chance to earn $19 million more through escalators. Dalton is now one of the Top 10 highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL but still only a QB2 for fantasy purposes.

  • Posted: 7/13/2014 3:57pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said he wants to help QB Andy Dalton improve his play this upcoming season. 'We are tethered together. And I'll jump off a building with this guy,' Jackson said, 'because I believe in the things he's trying to accomplish with his career, and I think I can help him.'

Huddle Up: Look for the Bengals to offer immediate help by calling more running plays. Dalton aired it out a career-high 586 times last season -- ranking eighth in the league -- but look for that number to drop with a running game featuring Giovanni Bernard, BenJarvus Green-Elllis and second-round pick Jeremy Hill.

Cincinnati Bengals beat writer Geoff Hobson believes the Bengals will sign QB Andy Dalton to an extension before the start of the season.

Huddle Up: If Dalton does get an extension offer, look for the guarantees to be few and definitely expect the team to have an early out if the QB can't show more consistency and get the Bengals over the postseason hump.

  • Posted: 5/11/2014 11:33pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton will remain the starter, despite a fifth-round selection of Alabama QB A.J. McCarron, according to Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson. 'This pick is not about Andy Dalton,' Jackson noted.

Huddle Up: If Cincy wanted to seriously push Dalton, they would've drafted a QB a lot earlier than Round 5, but make no mistake, this is a crucial year for the fourth-year QB to show better consistency and clear the postseason roadblock given his 0-3 playoff record as a starter.

  • Posted: 4/22/2014 3:39pm ET

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton said his agent has talked with the team about a contract extension but no deal is imminent at this point.

Huddle Up: Suffice it to say this coming season is a prove-it or lose-it year for Dalton, who is in the final season of his 4-year, $5.2 million rookie-year deal.
