New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said he believes WR Jerrel Jernigan has the opportunity to step his game up during offseason workouts since he will be the main slot receiver with restricted free-agent WR Victor Cruz sitting out the workouts. 'I think it's about time that he steps up. And I think we feel he has enough ability and he's been here now long enough. Until Victor gets back, he'll be the main guy inside at the slot position. It's a chance for him to shine and step forward and do the things that we believe he can do,' Gilbride said.

Huddle Up: Depending on the Cruz situation, the 2011 3rd-round pick could suddenly find himself thrust into the thick of the fray after catching only 1 pass over his first two NFL seasons. And even if Cruz and the Giants do patch things up, Jernigan likely needs to show some tangible progress or his roster spot could be in danger.

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan could see playing time as the No. 4 wide receiver next season. He also is expected to be a factor as the team's kickoff and punt returner.

Huddle Up: Jernigan, a third-round pick in 2011, has a total of 3 receptions for 22 yards in 2 NFL seasons, but now moves up on the depth chart with Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden gone. However, as a long as Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks are still occupying the top spots and remain reasonably healthy, Jernigan's fantasy upside is limited.

New York Giants WR Jerrel Jernigan could be used as a kick returner next season if the team wants to lighten RB David Wilson's load as a returner since he is expected to be the starting running back.

Huddle Up: Jernigan only has 3 receptions in his first 2 seasons, and it looks like returning kicks will be the best way for the 2011 third-round pick to get on the field with the Giants stacked at WR ahead of him.
