Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata (concussion) did not participate in practice and has been ruled out for Week 12.

Huddle Up: Fellow RB Jerick McKinnon (back) is listed as probable, and newly signed Ben Tate could get some work as well.

  • Posted: 10/13/2014 10:42am ET

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon played 58 offensive snaps in Week 6, while RB Matt Asiata played in just 15. McKinnon had 11 rushes for 40 yards and a team-high six catches for 42 yards.

Huddle Up: Not much of anything was working for the Vikings' offense, but it's interesting that McKinnon grabbed such a large share of the workload. Not that Asiata is anything special, but the expectation for McKinnon was that there would be a learning curve as he transitioned from option quarterback in college to NFL running back. Going forward expect Asiata to still have a role in the Vikings' offense, but it very well could be the junior role in Minnesota's backfield job share.

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata played 44 offensive snaps Thursday, Oct. 2, or 56 percent of the offense, while RB Jerick McKinnon played 30 snaps, or 38 percent of the offense.

Huddle Up: Asista finished with 15 carries for 72 yards and McKinnon carried 7 times for 24 yards and added 22 receiving yards on 3 catches, but neither scored on a deeply disappointing night for the Minnesota RBs given that the Packers had entered the game as one of the league's most generous teams in terms of fantasy points allowed to opposing RBs. Perhaps, though, it was simply a matter of QB Christian Ponder's poor play dragging down the entire offense, and better days should lie ahead for Asiata and McKinnon.

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon ran for 135 yards on 18 carries in the team's Week 4 win over the Atlanta Falcons, but head coach Mike Zimmer is hesitant to call him an every-down back, with RB Matt Asiata also in the mix. Zimmer prefers a committee approach at running back, because it poses more problems for defenses. Asiata is more of a between-the-tackles runner, while McKinnon presents a change of pace with his speed and quickness on the edges. McKinnon also isn't very polished in pass protection.

Huddle Up: Asiata had 23 touches to McKinnon's 19 last week, and it's reasonable to expect roughly the same ratio going forward here with the 2 backs. Asiata, though, deserves the fantasy edge, as the short-yardage back who's displayed a nose for the end zone (4 total TDs) so far.

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata figures to get a majority of the touches in Week 2 against the New England Patriots with RB Adrian Peterson deactivated. RB Jerick McKinnon is also expected to see touches.

Huddle Up: Asiata will see the majority of the carries this week, while McKinnon has long-range upside. With Peterson's future unclear, both backs are on the fantasy radar. Asiata will get his shot first to be the primary ball carrier but if he struggles, the talented McKinnon is waiting in the wings.

Minnesota Vikings RB Jerick McKinnon could see the field more than backup RB Matt Asiata because of his ability as a receiver and change-of-pace runner outside or between the tackles.

Huddle Up: Asiata would be the likely 20-carry back if Adrian Peterson were to go down, but as far as a complementary back receiving a half-dozen touches a game McKinnon is the more likely candidate. Assuming All Day stays on the field, however, neither holds much in the way of fantasy value.

The Minnesota Vikings have re-signed exclusive rights free-agent RB Matt Asiata. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Huddle Up: Adrian Peterson owners, meet your new handcuff with Toby Gerhart now playing for the Jags.

  • Posted: 3/25/2014 2:04pm ET

Minnesota Vikings RB Matt Asiata is working to serve as the primary backup to RB Adrian Peterson now that RB Toby Gerhart (Jaguars) is gone. The team elected to keep the exclusive rights free agent, signing him to a one-year, $570,000 contract this month. General manager Rick Spielman said the team is looking for depth at running back, but the team hasn't displayed an urgency to address the spot the first two weeks of free agency.

Huddle Up: Let's see how the rest of the Vikes' offseason plays out, but Asiata is the odds-on favorite as the Adrian Peterson handcuff role occupied by Gerhart the past several seasons. Asiata did make some waves in the fantasy postseason a year ago with his 3 rushing TDs in Week 15 and his 115 rushing yards in Week 17.
