The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports the Vikings have waived QB Gus Frerotte.
The Huddle Take: Hardly a shock once the trade for Sage Rosenfels was finalized. Gus demonstrated last season he still has a little left in the tank and would be a serviceable backup somewhere; problem is, he still wants to start.

The Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings QB Gus Frerotte said he will return to the team next season if he is paid a roster bonus of $250,000 that is due him in March.
The Huddle Take: This is a step back from Frerotte's initial statements that he would only return to the Vikings if he were the starter. And if the Vikings are successful in trading for Sage Rosenfels, Frerotte won't likely be returning at all.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said that he wants QB Gus Frerotte to push QB Tarvaris Jackson for the team's starting quarterback job next season. "We need to put somebody in place that will push him and compete with (Jackson)," Childress said. "I think competition is the nature of the game." Childress added Frerotte has not asked for his release nor indicated that he wants to retire.
The Huddle Take: If Childress intends to head into the 2009 season with status quo at the quarterback position, the only "push" Vikings fans will be looking for is to push Childress in front of a bus. While Frerotte has not asked for his release, he has stated publicly that he will only return to the Vikings if he is assured of starting.

ESPN.com reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said he has had several discussions with impending free-agent QB Gus Frerotte about the possibility of re-signing with the team. Childress said Frerotte could compete for the starting job if he returns.
The Huddle Take: Frerotte's stance has been that he wouldn't return to the team unless he's the starter, so we'll see if the two sides reach a compromise—or if the Vikings make any moves to upgrade at the position.

The Star Tribune reports Minnesota Vikings QB Gus Frerotte believes he has earned an opportunity to start for the team in 2009. "I was only in the offense for six months, so I should get a lot better with another year under my belt," Frerotte said. "I think I've earned the right to be a starter. It wasn't handed to me. I went in and played well and gave everything I had to the team." Frerotte was 8-3 as a starter last season.
The Huddle Take: Frerotte leaned heavily on the Vikings' defense and Adrian Peterson to build that 8-3 record, and his injuries and untimely interceptions opened the door for Tarvares Jackson to regain his starting job late in the season. While there's no question Frerotte can still play a little bit, his age and fragility make it difficult for a team to trust him as a starter.

Yahoo! Sports reports Minnesota Vikings QB Gus Frerotte, who is pondering his future, felt he was the best option at quarterback for the team and should have started the team's playoff game. 'I just don't know what to think right now. It was a very frustrating experience, because I felt like I should've been the one playing,' Frerotte said. 'That might sound selfish, but I think I would've given us the best chance to win. I'm going home to St. Louis (on Monday) to be with my family and figure out where things stand, but the way things played out at the end really makes me question things.'
The Huddle Take: This one is just an interesting note, because the reality is that he is probably right on with this comment. However, not much can be done now and the Vikes will likely move on without him, which probably won't hurt his feelings in the slightest.

Minnesota Vikings QB Gus Frerotte (back) was limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 18. Frerotte is improving and said he is 100 percent. However, he will not start in Week 16.
The Huddle Take: It's odd that he's 100 percent yet still not starting. Suffice to say young Tarvaris Jackson will be on an extremely short leash this week, since it seems Frerotte is good to go.

Minnesota Vikings QB Gus Frerotte (back) was limited in practice Friday, Dec. 12, and he is not expected to play in Week 15. He is listed as doubtful for the game.
The Huddle Take: Frerotte continues to be hampered by his back injury which makes him an even more questionable start than usual for Week 15. If he is out of action then backup quarterback Tavaris Jackson should get the starting nod for the Vikings.

Judd Zulgad, of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said it is possible for QB Gus Frerotte (back) to start in Week 15 without practicing this week.
The Huddle Take: No doubt the Vikes are leery of going forward with Tarvaris Jackson since a playoff berth is in reach. Expect Frerotte to play if it is at all possible.
Posted: 12/8/2008 7:02pm et
Minnesota Vikings QB Gus Frerotte (back) left the team's Week 14 game with a lower-back bruise, but head coach Brad Childress did not give any new information about Frerotte's status for Week 15. Childress said Frerotte would start if he is healthy. QB Tarvaris Jackson could start the game if Frerotte is unable to play.
The Huddle Take: Childress was tight-lipped when asked about Frerotte, which doesn't seem like a good sign regarding the quarterback's effectiveness this week against Arizona. The Cardinal pass defense is pretty close to Detroit's in terms of yarage allowed per game, and even though Arizona's given up 27 touchdowns to Detroit's 19, expect Minnesota to lean very heavily on the running game if Jackson plays. Not only will Adrian Peterson likely get plenty of carries, Chester Taylor will get quite a few as well. Rushing-wise, Arizona has only given up 10 touchdowns on the ground.
