San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is heading what is dubbed 'Camp Hoyer' prior to the start of training camp. At least 10 quarterbacks, wide receivers, tight ends and running backs attended workouts Monday, July 10, and Tuesday, July 11.

Huddle Up: Leadership shouldn't be a surprise from the veteran quarterback. It's a good sign that he and the offensive players are coming together, though, especially under a new regime. Unfortunately, Hoyer's leadership doesn't translate to fantasy football success. He's a bye-week replacement at best.

  • Posted: 5/29/2017 2:44pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is confident heading into his second stint with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator in 2014 when Hoyer quarterbacked the Browns. Hoyer said his familiarity with Shanahan's offense makes it easier for him to call plays, adding that it comes naturally to him now.

Huddle Up: Shanahan's offenses are usually exciting, but there's not a lot to be enticed with regarding San Francisco's offense, including Hoyer. The fact that he is the starter should not persuade people to draft him as a starting fantasy quarterback. At best, he is a bye-week replacement in good matchups.

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is No. 1 on the depth chart, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, followed by QB Matt Barkley and QB C.J. Beathard. 'We are bringing C.J. here to develop,' Shanahan said.

Huddle Up: At best, Hoyer is a low-end QB2 as long as he is the starter in San Francisco. Beathard projects as a career backup.

  • Posted: 3/16/2017 8:14pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer said he won't be content being a backup quarterback, and he believes he will have a leg up in a quarterback competition because he is familiar with head coach Kyle Shanahan's system.

Huddle Up: At this point, Hoyer has to be considered the frontrunner to start for the 49ers next year, but he shouldn't be viewed as more than a low-end QB2.

  • Posted: 3/12/2017 5:55pm ET

The San Francisco 49ers are likely looking at positions other than quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft after signing QB Brian Hoyer and QB Matt Barkley, according to Bucky Brooks of NFL.com.

Huddle Up: If the 49ers do pass on one of the top quarterback prospects, it will likely mean Hoyer opens the year as the starter, but he would only be a low-end QB2 candidate.

  • Posted: 3/11/2017 8:20am ET

The San Francisco 49ers will continue to look for quarterbacks this offseason despite signing Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley in free agency, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, who added he doesn't know whether the team will address the position in the free agency or the draft.

Huddle Up: This news hardly qualifies as a surprise, as neither Hoyer nor Barkley were signed to be the long-term answer. It does reduce the need for the 49ers to use the second pick of the draft next month to take a quarterback, although it certainly doesn't take them out of the market. Given the lack of a blue-chip passer in the draft, however, it appears the most likely scenario at the moment involves starting Hoyer in 2017 and hoping Kirk Cousins will sign with San Francisco next offseason.

Chicago Bears impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer could be pursued by the San Francisco 49ers, according to beat writer Matt Barrows.

Huddle Up: Even if Hoyer were to end up with the starting gig in San Francisco, he would be a low-end QB2 at best.

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list with a fractured forearm Monday, Oct. 24.

Huddle Up: Jay Cutler has been cleared to play, so he'll take over for Hoyer with Matt Barkely now serving as the backup. Cutler has been underwhelming this season and during his Bears tenure, though, and the Chicago quarterback situation is one to avoid.

  • Posted: 10/23/2016 7:25am ET

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) is scheduled to undergo surgery Sunday, Oct. 23, on his broken left forearm. He will be sidelined for at least eight weeks and could be placed on injured reserve.

Huddle Up: Matt Barkley will serve as Chicago's starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, with Jay Cutler (thumb) out indefinitely, but he is not a viable fantasy option. It had been hoped that Hoyer could make a late-season return but the odds of that happening now appear slim.

  • Posted: 10/22/2016 7:13am ET

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) is expected to undergo surgery to repair the broken radius bone in his left arm suffered during Week 7's game against the Green Bay Packers, according to a source. A late-season return has not been ruled out.

Huddle Up: QB Jay Cutler (thumb) remains out indefinitely, so Matt Barkley will be Chicago's primary signal-caller for the foreseeable future. However, Barkley is not a viable fantasy option and all Bears pass-catchers are likely to experience a dip in production for as long as he's in there.

  • Posted: 10/20/2016 7:27pm ET

Updating a previous story, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) was diagnosed with a broken left arm, according to head coach John Fox.

Huddle Up: With Jay Cutler (thumb) still out indefinitely, Matt Barkley is now in control of the Bears' offense. Hoyer can consider himself lucky in the sense he suffered the injury on his non-throwing arm, but he is still looking at an extended absence in all likelihood. Barkley has looked competent so far, but his presence is still a downgrade for all Chicago pass-catchers.

Updating previous items, Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (forearm) will not return to the Thursday, Oct. 20, game against the Green Bay Packers due to a forearm injury.

Huddle Up: Not much is known about how long Hoyer will be out, although things did not look good when Hoyer left for the locker room. For now, QB Matt Barkley is in the game, and QB Jay Cutler may have just gotten a reprieve in the short term. Stay tuned to see what the Bears do for their next move.

  • Posted: 10/20/2016 6:13pm ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer (arm) was shaken up in the second quarter of the Thursday, Oct. 20, game against the Green Bay Packers. QB Matt Barkley was seen warming up on the sidelines, but Hoyer was also seen walking the sidelines before heading to the locker room holding his left arm.

Huddle Up: This is a fluid situation, so stay tuned for further details on whether Hoyer comes back in or Barkley has to finish the game.

  • Posted: 10/17/2016 4:48pm ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer is the first quarterback since at least 1960 to throw for at least 300 passing yards in four straight games.

Huddle Up: Not bad for a backup quarterback eh? Hoyer has taken the starting job from Jay Cutler and run away with it. It seems unlikely that Cutler would retain the starting position when he returns to good health. Hoyer's success can't be ignored. He's a low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 this week facing a subpar Green Bay Packers pass defense.

  • Posted: 10/16/2016 3:02pm ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer went 30-for-49 for 302 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 6.

Huddle Up: Hoyer has thrown for at least 300 yards in every game since becoming the starting quarterback and has six touchdowns during that span. He will be facing the Green Bay Packers on short rest in Week 7 and can be considered a low-end No. 1 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 10/9/2016 7:51pm ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer completed 33 of his 43 pass attempts for 397 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 5 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Huddle Up: Hoyer continues to shine with three straight 300-yard performances and two touchdowns in each of the outings. Hoyer has performed like a low-end QB1 since taking the reins for the injured Jay Cutler. He'll look to continue in Week 6 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

  • Posted: 10/9/2016 8:06am ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer could win the starting quarterback job if he continues to play well while QB Jay Cutler (thumb) is sidelined.

Huddle Up: Hoyer has thrown for at least 300 yards and two touchdowns in each of the last two games and likely will stay in the lineup if he continues to play well. Owners in daily fantasy leagues should consider Hoyer a starting option, and he could be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues.

  • Posted: 10/2/2016 1:58pm ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns in a 17-14 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Huddle Up: If Hoyer keeps this up, we could have a case of a backup unseating an injured QB. You may want to pick up Hoyer and stash him on your bench to see what happens when Jay Cutler returns -- if he does.

  • Posted: 9/24/2016 7:38pm ET

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer has pointed out throughout the week that he has not had many reps with WR Alshon Jeffery this season.

Huddle Up: Despite the lack of reps, you can expect Hoyer to look Jeffery's way early and often against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 3, assuming Jeffery can play through a knee injury. If Jeffery is on the field, he has WR2 upside in all formats.
