Detroit Lions PK David Akers had a successful 63-yard field goal off the right goalpost in practice Monday, Aug. 19, and any doubts about his leg strength after an injury-plagued 2012 should be put to rest.
Huddle Up: Akers' leg strength hasn't been the question of late. Rather it's been his accuracy, hitting only 69 percent (29-of-44) of his attempts last season for the Niners. He's competing with Norwegian import Havard Rugland for the job ably held by Jason Hanson since the early 90s, but Akers' 15 years of NFL experience gives him a leg up on the much-hyped but new-to-the-game Rugland.

Detroit Lions PK David Akers admitted that he's still not 100 percent following the aggravation that brought on lingering effects of his double hernia surgery last offseason. He hasn't been doing much kicking in organized team activities so far. He's taking it slow so he can be ready to go by training camp.
Huddle Up: No reason to worry about Akers yet, as he has plenty of time to heal before his kicks start to matter.
