Detroit Lions PK David Akers admitted that he's still not 100 percent following the aggravation that brought on lingering effects of his double hernia surgery last offseason. He hasn't been doing much kicking in organized team activities so far. He's taking it slow so he can be ready to go by training camp.
Huddle Up: No reason to worry about Akers yet, as he has plenty of time to heal before his kicks start to matter.
Posted: 4/7/2013 1:46pm et
The Detroit Lions have signed free-agent PK David Akers (49ers) to an undisclosed deal.
Huddle Up: Akers, a career 82-percent kicker, struggled badly last season, misfiring on 14 FG attempts, including a miss in the playoffs. The Lions, obviously, are hoping a change of scenery will straighten Akers out as they try to replace the retired Jason Hanson.
Posted: 3/6/2013 10:06pm et
The San Francisco 49ers have released PK David Akers.
Huddle Up: One year removed from setting a league record for field goals, Akers struggled and was very nearly replaced for San Francisco's playoff run. He's bound to catch on elsewhere, though it would be tough to find a home with better fantasy prospects than the 49ers provided. The Niners test-drove Billy Cundiff late in the season and could bring him back, but they have all offseason to worry about filling the kicker spot.
Posted: 3/5/2013 12:40pm et
The San Francisco 49ers are expected to release PK David Akers before the start of free agency.
Huddle Up: Akers has been a top-10 fantasy PK in each of the past 5 seasons, but his 13 misses, including the postseason, were far too many for an established veteran, who has to rank among the league's highest-paid kickers.
Posted: 2/6/2013 3:19pm et
The San Francisco 49ers are likely to part ways with PK David Akers and his $3 million salary in the offseason.
Huddle Up: One year after setting an NFL record for field goals, Akers struggled with inaccuracy, injury, and inconsistency for the 49ers. He'll likely find another team to kick for in 2013, but it's unlikely to be a team that provides as many scoring opportunities as the 49ers have.
Posted: 1/31/2013 11:21pm et
San Francisco 49ers PK David Akers attempted field goals during
practice Thursday, Jan. 31, with teammates yelling in order to
create some crowd noise that he will hear during the game. Head
coach Jim Harbaugh said Akers made all of his attempts and that his
mechanics looked very good.
Huddle Up: No matter how well Akers kicks in practice, there are going be some
nervous Niners and San Fran fans if Akers is called on to attempt a
field goal Sunday. That's only to be expected after 14 misses in 44
attempts, including the postseason, this year.
Posted: 1/15/2013 12:34pm et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the PK David Akers
is still the team's starting kicker, and that PK Billy Cundiff is
still on the roster.
Huddle Up: Akers connected on his only FG attempt -- a 36-yarder -- and all 6
of his extra-point tries in the divisional playoff win so there's no
reason to make a switch now.
Posted: 1/11/2013 1:15am et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed PK David Akers
will be the kicker in the team's playoff game Saturday, Jan. 12.
Huddle Up: Akers may have saved his job for now, but it will all be for naught
if he misfires on a key FG Saturday night in what figures to be a
tight game with the visiting Packers.
Posted: 1/9/2013 4:05pm et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he believes PK David Akers is healthy and said he has had good practices going back to last week.
Huddle Up: There have been questions about Akers' health for much of the second half of the season, and his play has done nothing to deflect such questions. If you're in a playoff fantasy league, better hope you're using "team kicker"; otherwise, the safest route is to add someone from another team.
Posted: 1/8/2013 12:45pm et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said there is a leader in the competition between PK David Akers and PK Billy Cundiff but would not say which one was in the lead.
Huddle Up: Regardless of who's kicking Saturday night, there will be some gritted teeth and more than a few crossed fingers if the playoff matchup comes down to potential game-winning 48-yard field goal attempt for the Niners.
Posted: 1/2/2013 2:24pm et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team could decide whether PK David Akers or PK Billy Cundiff will kick in the Divisional Round playoff game by the end of the week but there is no official timetable for a decision. "We'll practice Thursday, Friday and then we'll see if a decision is made after that," Harbaugh said. "Or if it goes into Monday, Tuesday or after. But there's no definite timeline on it."
Huddle Up: The Akers/Cundiff situation makes it tricky if you're drafting a kicker in a fantasy playoff league, especially since you want kickers who will play multiple games and the Niners are a Vegas favorite in the NFC. Might want to make a push for "team kicker" scoring before your draft.
Posted: 1/1/2013 10:52pm et
San Francisco 49ers PK David Akers will remain on the roster and compete with Billy Cundiff, signed Tuesday, to determine who will play in the postseason.
Huddle Up: Akers looked like he would pick up where he left off in a record-setting 2011 season (single-season record 44 field goals) by matching the NFL mark with a 63-yard field goal in the season opener, but a league-leading 13 missed field goals have followed, leaving the Niners no choice but to bring in another leg. Cundiff, though, isn't without his own baggage, missing a crucial field goal in last season's AFC Championship Game and getting cut after missing 5 FG attempts in 5 games with the Redskins this season.
Posted: 12/3/2012 4:43pm et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team is sticking with PK David Akers even though he is working through some things, Monday, Dec. 3.
Huddle Up: Akers is in a mega-slump, and one wonders how long Harbaugh will wait for him to work his way out of it with the playoffs creeping closer.
Posted: 10/16/2012 11:02pm et
San Francisco 49ers PK David Akers (illness) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 16, due to illness.
Huddle Up: Akers should be OK for Thursday's game, but the more pressing issue has been the drop in his performance this season. Akers, who enjoyed a record-setting 2011 with 44 field goals and an 85-percent success rate, only has converted 69 percent of his attempts so far this season, including 6-of-11 from beyond 40 yards.
