Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is on pace for 328 carries, while rookie RB Jeremy Hill is ticketed for 152 for a total of 480. That would be the most by two Bengals backs in a single season, shattering the previous record of 405, set in 2000. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson isn't estimating how many carries each will get on a given day, and said Wednesday, Sept. 17, that is varies from series to series. He calls plays on the sidelines rather than up in the booth so he can sense the ebb and flow of the game. 'It's the way things unfold. But Gio is the starting tailback on this football team. So at the end of the day, he's going to get some chances that maybe everybody else doesn't get until he proves he can't or the other guy proves that he's better,' Jackson said.

Huddle Up: No surprises here, not even Jackson's backfield tandem being on pace to set records for usage. You knew Hue wanted to run the ball, you knew Gio would be the lead guy, and you hoped Hill would prove up to handling his share of the load; thus far all have proven true.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard will likely see more touches than RB Jeremy Hill in Week 1, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Huddle Up: More touches? Bernard's fantasy owners are most certainly hoping so with their man being drafted, on average, a full 100 picks before the second-round pick who's coming off a strong preseason showing.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is expected to be utilized early and often in 2014. One beat writer expects 230 carries and 70 receptions.

Huddle Up: Fantasy owners wouldn't mind seeing Gio get 300 touches this season, a reasonable workload that shouldn't overly tax the smaller-in-stature Bernard. The key will be if Jeremy Hill (or Rex Burkhead, or BenJarvus Green-Ellis) plays well enough to earn a chunk of carries that will keep Gio fresh without compromising the Bengals' offensive success.

Cincinnati Bengals running backs coach Kyle Caskey indicated the team would like to get RB Giovani Bernard more involved in the passing game this upcoming season. 'We want to do more with him because he can do that,' Caskey said. 'It's not just put him in the slot. We want him everywhere on the field. Make people guess where's he at. You have to make a decision to either play the run or play the pass. What do you do when he's on the field? He's a lot like [Detroit Lions RB Reggie Bush] where you have to be aware at all times.'

Huddle Up: Bernard was targeted 71 times and did have 56 receptions as a rookie, which ranked 8th among all NFL RBs last season. Count on him being one of the top backs off the board in most PPR leagues this summer.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard said he expects a wild playbook from new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson in 2014. 'For me and Benny, I think we've done a good job thus far. I think we can continue to keep doing a good job,' Bernard said. 'We just got to go into it with an open mind, and he's (Jackson) going to create this craziest playbook ever, but it's going to be fun. I'm excited for it.' Jackson is expected to move the Bengals to a more ground-and-pound offensive approach including Bernard and RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

Huddle Up: Bernard had 226 touches to Green-Ellis' 224 last season, but look for the margin to swing more in favor of the second-year RB if both players are back in Cincy next season.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard finished with 99 yards on 12 carries in the Week 14 game against the Indianapolis Colts, just missing his first career 100-yard game. He also added 49 yards on four receptions.

Huddle Up: A great game to start off the fantasy playoffs, but BenJarvus Green-Ellis was the one getting into the end zone. Bernard should have PPR value, but the Law Firm is going to be in the way.

  • Posted: 11/8/2013 4:53pm ET

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden wants to limit RB Giovani Bernard's workload in the second half of the season in order to keep him fresh and healthy. In the last four games, RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis has 60 touches to 52 for Bernard. 'To say we're going to give the ball to Gio 25 times each week is kind of unrealistic,' Gruden said. 'He needs spelling. He needs a bigger back in there like BenJarvus to take 10, 12, 15 carries a game.' Bernard (ribs) was limited in practice for a third straight day Friday and is listed as questionable on the injury report.

Huddle Up: Bernard injured his ribs late in his standout Week 9 Thursday night performance against the Dolphins, and has needed the extra days to recover. With limited touches, his owners are going to have to hope 1 or 2 of them are signature big plays from the rookie.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said he does not expect RB Giovani Bernard (rib) to miss much time after suffering a rib injury during the team's Week 9 game.

Huddle Up: Bernard was having have a huge game before leaving late with a rib injury. We'll know more about his status during the week but hopefully Bernard will be able to play against Baltimore next Sunday.

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (ribs) suffered bruised ribs in the fourth quarter of the team's game Thursday, Oct. 31, but the injury isn't believed to be serious.

Huddle Up: At least the rookie delivered with 104 total yards and 2 TDs before departing the game in the fourth quarter. He'll also have an extra few days of rest with the Bengals not playing again until a week from Sunday.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard left the team's Week 9 game in the fourth quarter Thursday, Oct. 31 because of a rib injury and did not return.

Huddle Up: With his team down 17-3, Bernard got the Bengals back in the game with a pair of second-half rushing touchdowns and finished with 104 total yards on only 13 touches. There was no immediate word on how serious the injury is, but at at least the rookie will have a few extra days to recover with 10 days until Cincy's Week 10 contest.
