San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was benched in the fourth quarter of the team's Week 13 after he completed only one of his five passes for four yards during the game. He also sacked five times during the game and lost 25 yards. Kaepernick was replaced by QB Blaine Gabbert during the game.

Huddle Up: It is not known if Kaepernick will remain the starting quarterback or if Gabbert will take over the job. Kaepernick played well before Week 13, but owners may want to avoid the 49ers quarterback situation for the rest of the season.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 18 of his 31 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and was sacked seven times in a 33-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Oct. 6. He also ran 10 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Huddle Up: Gabbert was running for his life most of the night, but he continued to show he can make plays with his legs. He is quietly on pace for more than 500 rushing yards, and he could be a bye-week starter in two-quarterback leagues.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert threw an interception and finished with 119 yards passing Sunday, Sept. 25, in a 37-18 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Huddle Up: And the drum beat gets louder. The 49ers have a real problem on their hands. Keep Gabbert as the starter or bench him and go with Colin Kaepernick and the media maelstrom that is sure to follow? Right now, the best thing is to stay away from the Niners' passing game.

  • Posted: 9/18/2016 10:21pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 17 of his 36 pass attempts for 243 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers. He also rushed three times for 10 yards and a score.

Huddle Up: Gabbert isn't a must-start fantasy option just yet, but he has posted reasonable numbers. When bye weeks starts you might want to consider Gabbert as a stopgap option, especially if the matchup is favorable.

  • Posted: 9/12/2016 9:06pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 22 of his 35 pass attempts for 170 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams. He also ran nine times for 43 yards before giving way to backup QB Colin Kaepernick late in the fourth quarter of a blowout win.

Huddle Up: Gabbert didn't look great, and he is a low-end QB2 in most fantasy leagues for a reason. But his running numbers were a bit of an eye opener and he could be useful down the road if he continues to jell with his receivers.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert likely will be the starting quarterback for the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Huddle Up: It appears that Gabbert is the leading candidate for the starting job and would have to struggle to lose the job. Gabbert had some success as a starter last season but would only be a low-end No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 8/26/2016 1:19pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) could start the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, since QB Blaine Gabbert started the first two preseason games.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick and Gabbert continue to compete for the starting job but this will be Kaepernick's first time on the field this offseason. Kaepernick would be the more valuable option for fantasy owners, but neither quarterback should be a No. 1 quarterback for owners.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been the "landslide favorite for weeks" in his battle with QB Colin Kaepernick, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Huddle Up: Caplan notes head coach Chip Kelly "is trying to be fair" to Kaepernick by allowing the quarterback competition to go on this long, but Kaepernick likely missed too much time in the offseason to make it a fair fight. Expect Gabbert to be running the show in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams and make for a sneaky QB2 option for an offense that figures to be playing from behind a lot in 2016.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert appears likely to start the team's preseason opener against the Sunday, Aug. 14, although head coach Chip Kelly hasn't made an official announcement. QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) did not practice Friday, Aug. 12, and his status for Sunday's game is uncertain.

Huddle Up: Reports suggest that Gabbert is the clear leader to open the year as the 49ers starting quarterback and with Kaepernick dealing with a sore shoulder, this isn't a surprise. Kaepernick will get his shot in the preseason too but expect Gabbert to be under center Sunday when the 49ers take on the Texans.

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will share snaps with the first-team offense during preseason games until the team is ready to name a starting quarterback, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Huddle Up: As expected the duel will continue through the first few preseason games, but the onus in on Kaepernick to show more with Gabbert said to be in the lead according to most reports.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is considered an enormous favorite to start over QB Colin Kaepernick in the regular season opener, in the opinion of beat writer Tim Kawakami.

Huddle Up: It's not looking good for those banking on a Kaepernick fantasy rebound, but even if it is Gabbert, he's not likely going to be of much fantasy use in standard leagues, either.

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick head into training camp battling for the starting job under center. Many in the organization feel Gabbert is a better fit in head coach Chip Kelly's offense, and he has a good grasp of the offseason.

Huddle Up: It's a battle that's more intriguing to NFL Nation in general than the fantasy realm, and neither is viewed as much as a QB2 given the uncertainty and the myriad offensive question marks with the San Fran offense. Even though Gabbert is the slight favorite to win the job, Kaepernick has more upside simply because he's done it before.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has turned heads during the offseason and he has really surprised with his athleticism. 'On the field, I know (head coach Chip Kelly) talked about his athleticism. I felt the same way. I didn't know he was as athletic as he was. Throwing the ball, too. He can make all the throws that you need. He has a really good skillset and we're excited about that,' quarterbacks coach Ryan Day said.

Huddle Up: Gabbert has demonstrated athleticism in the past--not Colin Kaepernick athleticism, but more than enough to move in the pocket and provide the occasional running threat as well. He's a good fit for Kelly's offense, and if he demonstrates he's a better passer than Kaepernick--or at least is healthy, something Kaepernick has yet to prove--he'll get first crack at running the 49ers' attack.

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are on similar ground, according to head coach Chip Kelly. 'I think they're similar,' Kelly told KGMZ-FM. 'They have a similar skill set. They're both 6-foot-4-plus. They both can really run, which will help keep plays alive. Obviously we're not a quarterback-run offense, but if the quarterback can run, you can use a little of that to your advantage. And they both have extremely strong arms. So, from a skill set standpoint, the two of them are kind of cut out of the same mold.'

Huddle Up: Kaepernick needs to get healthy and on the field to make this any sort of quarterback competition; otherwise Gabbert gets the job by default. And Kelly QBs tend to put up solid fantasy numbers, so there's some fantasy upside to whomever wins the job.

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has impressed new head coach Chip Kelly with his athleticism in offseason workouts. 'He's extremely athletic,' Kelly began. 'It's interesting, the three of them, if you look at Driskel, Blaine and Kap, they're all 6-4 plus, and all can run. All of them are at 4.6 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) or under 4.6, which is kind of rare to have three guys that can do the same thing. It's beneficial to you.'

Huddle Up: Tall, athletic quarterbacks... sounds like Chip is in heaven. Gabbert was surprisingly effective after taking over last season, and he has to be considered the favorite to be helming Kelly's offense when the season starts--and reaping the fantasy benefits that come with said role.

  • Posted: 5/15/2016 2:06pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016. Kaepernick has not been cleared to fully participate in offseason workouts at this point but may be able to participate during the mandatory minicamp in June.

Huddle Up: It's truly an open competition after Gabbert replaced an injured and ineffective Kaepernick last season, and it'll certainly be one of the most-closely watched position duels in August.

  • Posted: 4/14/2016 5:24pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert could be a reclamation project of new head coach Chip Kelly this season. Kelly is supposedly more attracted to the idea of making Gabbert better than drafting a quarterback, according to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.

Huddle Up: Gabbert hit career highs (min. 8 games played) last season for passer rating (86.2), yards per attempt (7.2) and rushing yards (185) while going 3-5 as a starter, and he could indeed be the Niners' No. 1 guy if the still-persistent Colin Kaepernick trade rumors prove to be true and the increasing likelihood that both of the draft's top two QB prospects will be gone before the Niners pick seventh overall in the first round.

  • Posted: 3/25/2016 3:25pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert's size and skill set impressed head coach Chip Kelly, who said Gabbert would be in competition with QB Colin Kaepernick to start. 'He's big,' Kelly said. 'I'd never really dealt with Blaine because he came into the league before I came into the league, but just how big and physical and impressive he is. He's a 6-4, 245-pound guy that can really run. I thought the last part of the season he played really well. It'll be intriguing to work with him, too.'

Huddle Up: Gabbert threw for 2,031 yards, 10 TDs and seven interceptions in eight starts while posting the best QB rating (86.2) of his career. Add in Gabbert's mobility -- a strong fit for Kelly's system -- and the Niners and their new coach at least have a semi-solid QB to start with if they can't work things out with Kaepernick.
