San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick opted out of his contract Friday, March 3, according to sources.

Huddle Up: He averaged 187 passing yards and 1.33 touchdowns per game last season along with 39 rushing yards. He only threw four picks last season, which was a vast improvement. He is shell of the dynamic dual threat that took his team to the Super Bowl four years ago. He's a meager QB2 in fantasy.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's new agents, Jeff Nalley and Sean Kiernan, have informed all 32 teams that Kaepernick will be opting out of his contract.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick's fantasy hourglass is getting pretty thin. He could be a midrange QB2 at best right now.

  • Posted: 2/14/2017 10:00pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is open to returning to the team in 2017, according to 'those close to him.' The 29-year-old is due to earn nearly $15 million in base salary, but he can also opt out of the deal and enter free agency, which begins on March 9. San Francisco also has the option of releasing him with little ramifications to their salary cap.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick ended up putting together a pretty nice season, finishing with 16 touchdowns versus only four interceptions, while recording a 90.7 QB rating -- his best since 2013. Furthermore, he averaged nearly 40 rushing yards per game. With a new coaching staff and general manager, San Francisco ultimately may decide to go in a different direction, but if Kaepernick still has a starting job next year, he could end up being a solid QB2 option.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is not expected to be a trade target again this offseason for the Denver Broncos.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick-to-Denver looked like it was going to happen last offseason, but the compensation can never get worked out, and the Broncos ended up sticking with Trevor Siemian and drafting Paxton Lynch. Denver has reaffirmed its commitment to developing both several times already this offseason, so it appears Kaepernick will have to look elsewhere for a potential starting gig if he opts out of his deal with San Francisco.

  • Posted: 12/24/2016 6:04pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 28 of his 38 pass attempts for 266 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Week 16 game against the Los Angeles Rams. He also ran six times for 15 yards and a score, and added a two-point conversion.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick has thrown for 10 touchdowns over his past six games, and outside of that disastrous snow game in Chicago in Week 13 he has been a borderline low-end QB1 or must-start QB2 down the stretch in most fantasy formats.

  • Posted: 12/18/2016 10:51pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 20 of his 33 pass attempts for 183 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 15 game against the Atlanta Falcons. He also rushed three times for 21 yards.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick had an OK game, but he did not have a huge statistical game against the league's worst-ranked passing defense. He remains more of a QB2 in fantasy leagues headed down the stretch.

  • Posted: 12/15/2016 7:10pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (neck) was added to the injury report but was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 15.

Huddle Up: The Falcons defense has given up plenty of points this year, but Kaepernick is still nothing more than a desperation QB2 in Week 15.

  • Posted: 12/6/2016 10:16am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will get the start in Week 14 against the New York Jets, according to offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins.

Huddle Up: After about a month-long run as the second-best quarterback in fantasy behind Aaron Rodgers, the 49ers only allowed Kaepernick to throw five passes and run six times before benching him in the fourth quarter during what was supposed to be a very good matchup against an injury-riddled Chicago Bears defense. The Jets arguably present a better matchup and he'll be at home this time around, but the risk of trusting him outside of a contrarian play in DFS is just too high during the fantasy playoffs.

  • Posted: 12/4/2016 9:52am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will void his contract after the season and will become an unrestricted free agent, according to sources. Kaepernick has not ruled out re-signing with the 49ers during the offseason.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick has posted decent numbers since taking over the starting job and has six touchdowns and one interception over the last three games. Kaepernick can be a low-end No. 1 quarterback against certain opponents moving forward.

  • Posted: 11/29/2016 3:01pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is averaging 62.2 yards per game on the ground. In total, Kaepernick has 373 rushing yards on 46 attempts, including one touchdown. 'He's out there, he's in control and when he sees an opportunity he's taken advantage of it,' offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said. In addition to his rushing success, Kaepernick is averaging 277.5 yards per game through the air with eight touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick has been one of the most pleasant surprises in the fantasy realm after taking over as the 49ers' starter. His running ability gives him a distinct advantage over pocket passers from a fantasy perspective and he should no longer be overlooked. In fact, he should be started this week in a favorable matchup against an ailing Chicago Bears defense.

  • Posted: 11/27/2016 2:00pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 29-for-46 passing for 296 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He rushed a game-high 113 yards on 10 carries.

Huddle Up: Kaep has been more than capable of exploiting favorable matchups in recent weeks. The Niners have midrange fantasy schedule the rest of the way, so keep him in mind for streaming and DFS purposes.

  • Posted: 11/20/2016 10:17pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 16 of his 30 pass attempts for 206 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 11 game against the New England Patriots. He rushed four times for 32 yards and was sacked five times.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick had a fairly decent performance against the Patriots in rainy and sloppy conditions. The 49ers can expect better weather in their Week 12 matchup in Miami. He remains a solid QB2 in most fantasy formats.

  • Posted: 11/13/2016 9:47pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 17 of his 30 pass attempts for 210 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 10 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He rushed 10 times for a team-high 55 yards and a touchdown, too.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick fared pretty well against a solid defense actually, and he'll face another challenging defense when the New England Patriots visit next weekend. Kaep remains more of a streaming option if your primary option is on a bye.

  • Posted: 11/6/2016 10:14pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 24 of his 39 pass attempts for 398 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the Week 9 game against the New Orleans Saints. He also ran five times for 23 yards.

Huddle Up: It wasn't all great, as Kaepernick did lose a fumble. He entered with 330 passing yards and two touchdowns in his previous two starts combined, but this line wasn't terribly surprising considering the New Orleans Saints have a terrible pass defense. If Kaep is able to replicate this production in Arizona in Week 10 against a good defense then he can be trusted in fantasy leagues again.

  • Posted: 10/23/2016 9:58pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick completed 16 of his 34 pass attempts for 143 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 7 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He rushed nine times for a team-high 84 yards.

Huddle Up: The 49ers got off to a solid start with 14 points in the first quarter, but managed just three in the final three quarters. Kaepernick hasn't provided a big shot in the arm for the offense or fantasy owners, and he is only worth rostering in the deepest of leagues and those formats which start two quarterbacks. The 49ers are off in Week 8.

  • Posted: 10/17/2016 12:32pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will remain the starting quarterback in Week 7 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick was OK in his first start of the season. What makes him attractive from a fantasy standpoint is his running ability. He led the 49ers with 66 rushing yards last week. The matchup is decent, but he is best used as a cheap play in daily formats in order to spend up at other positions.

  • Posted: 10/16/2016 1:18pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick went 13-for-29 for 187 yards and one touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 6. He also rushed for 66 yards on eight carries during the game.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick had some problems completing passes during the game with 16 incompletions but was able to move the ball with his arm and legs. Kaepernick should keep the starting quarterback moving forward and could be a No. 2 quarterback in most fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 10/12/2016 2:48pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has agreed to a restructured contract that will eliminate the final four years of his contract and make him an unrestricted free agent after the season if he does not pick up the one-year player option, according to sources. Kaepernick's salary for 2016 remains the same, and the 49ers will not be allowed to use the franchise tag if he decides to become a free agent.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick will be the starting quarterback for the 49ers in Week 6 and likely will keep the job if he plays well. Owners may want to see how he performs in Chip Kelly's offense before considering him a fantasy option.

  • Posted: 10/7/2016 9:00pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is working on a restructured deal that would alleviate concerns regarding injury guarantees in his contract, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Huddle Up: By eliminating the injury guarantees, the 49ers may be more likely to play Kaepernick this season. Even if he plays, there is no guarantee he will be productive, so he is nothing more than speculative stash at this point.

  • Posted: 8/29/2016 5:01pm ET

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said he expects QB Colin Kaepernick to be on the roster when the regular season starts but that it is not his decision.

Huddle Up: It appears that Kaepernick is losing the battle for the starting quarterback job to Blaine Gabbert, but head coach Chip Kelly said Kaepernick is still an option. He probably would only be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job and can be avoided if he is a backup.

  • Posted: 8/28/2016 8:53pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick faces a 'very big uphill battle' to make the 53-man roster, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

Huddle Up: If Kaepernick is cut, Blaine Gabbert would have a little more job security. Chip Kelly has worked miracles before with quarterbacks, but Gabbert remains a speculative QB2.

  • Posted: 8/27/2016 5:38am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick went 2-for-6 for 14 yards in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26. He also rushed for 18 yards on four carries. Kaepernick said he believes he still has a chance to win the starting quarterback job.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick appears to be behind Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback position but still has a chance since head coach Chip Kelly has not named a starter yet. He would have more fantasy value than Gabbert but likely would only be a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues if he wins the job.

  • Posted: 8/22/2016 12:42pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in a full warmup practice Monday, Aug. 22. It was his first such participation since Aug. 10.

Huddle Up: Maybe now Kaep can ramp up San Fran's quarterback competition. Blaine Gabbert has been decent in the first two preseason games, but he hasn't really flashed. Kaepernick still has a chance to prove he deserves to start, but neither Gabbert nor Kaepernick are starting caliber QBs in traditional leagues.

  • Posted: 8/21/2016 7:40am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) displayed improved velocity on his passes during pregame warmups Saturday, Aug. 20, and remains on target to resume practicing this week, according to head coach Chip Kelly. The team remains hopeful that he will play in the next preseason game versus the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick is engaged in a battle this preseason for San Francisco's starting quarterback job with Blaine Gabbert. Although Kaepernick has a higher ceiling, neither player should be viewed as anything more than a QB2 in traditional fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 8/16/2016 7:37pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 16, as he continues to deal with his dead arm. Kaepernick has not thrown a pass in six days.

Huddle Up: A sure sign that Kaepernick is expected back later than sooner is that the Niners signed free-agent QB Christian Ponder on Tuesday. In the meantime, it's looking more and more like Blaine Gabbert will win the Niners' starting gig by default.

  • Posted: 8/15/2016 9:08am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) isn't expected to be out of action much longer and could play in the second preseason game against the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 20, head coach Chip Kelly said.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick is facing an uphill battle to win the starting job from Blaine Gabbert. The eventual starter should benefit from Kelly's system and finish as a midrange QB2.

  • Posted: 8/12/2016 10:59pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) said he is not too concerned about his sore throwing shoulder and expects to be available for the preseason opener against the Houston Texans Sunday, Aug. 14.

Huddle Up: Blaine Gabbert is reportedly the clear favorite to open the season as the 49ers starting quarterback, so Kaepernick can't afford to miss preseason games. Kaepernick should be considered questionable for Sunday's game. Either way, it appears to be Gabbert's job to lose at this point.

  • Posted: 8/12/2016 4:22pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) was limited during practice Friday, Aug. 12, because of a sore shoulder. He was expected to share first-team snaps with QB Blaine Gabbert during the first preseason game Sunday, Aug. 14, but the injury may change things.

Huddle Up: Those banking on Kaepernick fantasy comeback season first need the QB to at least overtake Gabbert, and right now he's lagging behind. Let's see if he can fight through the issues and make up some ground here in the next week or so.

  • Posted: 8/5/2016 8:46am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has shown more of a willingness to run with the ball on zone read plays so far this offseason. Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said those runs have not been by design. "Our offense takes what the defense gives us," Modkins said. Kaepernick and QB Blaine Gabbert are in the midst of a position battle for the starting quarterback job.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick has more fantasy value than Gabbert because of his running ability, but neither are consistent options. Whoever wins the gig should be drafted as a fantasy backup.

  • Posted: 8/3/2016 8:30am ET

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert have taken an equal amount of reps in practice with the first-team offense so far in training camp. Both have been sharper working with would-be starters than the second team. Head coach Chip Kelly noted the preseason games will be critical.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick and Gabbert are battling hard for the starting job, but the winner will be a low-end QB2, at best, in most fantasy leagues. The only time the San Francisco starter should be active in fantasy is out of desperation or in formats which require two starting signal callers. DFS owners may consider either passer for matchup plays.

  • Posted: 7/26/2016 10:45pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has received medical clearance to participate fully in training camp, according to a source. Kaepernick had a torn left labrum repaired this offseason in addition to surgery on his right thumb and left knee.

Huddle Up: That means we'll have two healthy combatants for what figures to be one of the more intriguing and tightly contested QB battles of August. Let the duel begin ...

  • Posted: 6/10/2016 11:24am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick doesn't anticipate any issues between him and the organization this season, even after requesting a trade earlier in the year. 'I'm here, I'm a 49er, I'm excited for this offseason, the work that I can put in this summer to get ready for training camp and to come in and compete,' Kaepernick said. Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee), who had multiple offseason surgeries, also expects to be healthier and bulkier when training camp rolls around.

Huddle Up: The S.F. QB derby between Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert looks to be a dead heat right now, and the former's health will go a long way in determining the opening-week starter.

  • Posted: 6/7/2016 4:00pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) isn't cleared to take part in the minicamp, but head coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick will do individual drills on the side.

Huddle Up: It's been a slow offseason so far for Kaepernick, who looks as if he'll have some catching up to do in training camp if he's to beat out Blaine Gabbert for the starting gig.

  • Posted: 6/7/2016 12:18pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) won't be cleared for minicamp this week, but the team is hoping he receives clearance closer to training camp.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick needs to get on the field to have any chance of wresting the starting job from Blaine Gabbert. Getting reps in Chip Kelly's offensive scheme would also be beneficial as well.

  • Posted: 6/3/2016 11:06am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) does not have a timetable for when he will be cleared for football activities, according to offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins. Modkins said it's important that Kaepernick is cleared when he's healthy.

Huddle Up: Ideally Kaepernick would be taking plenty of reps in the Niners new offensive system. If he remains out too long it will be difficult for him to unseat Blaine Gabbert as San Francisco's starter.

  • Posted: 6/1/2016 10:29am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, knee, thumb) has still not been cleared to participate in practice but he has reported for every organized team activity this offseason. Kaepernick has been taking mental reps during practice. He is scheduled to receive a $400,000 bonus if he participates in at least 90% of the offseason workouts. Kaepernick may not receive clearance for full participation for the mandatory minicamp in a few weeks.

Huddle Up: $400K is a solid incentive to show up, and any reps mental or otherwise Kaepernick can get in the Niners' new system can only help. This still projects to be a training camp battle, with some fantasy upside for whoever is handed the keys to Chip Kelly's offense in San Francisco.

  • Posted: 5/18/2016 9:19am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. '[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing,' Kelly said. 'I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do.' Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

Huddle Up: Expect Chip to play this battle out throughout camp, and maybe even into the season. Given the dearth of receivers in San Francisco it's tough to bank on either QB for fantasy help this year even given the productive history of quarterbacks in Kelly's offenses.

  • Posted: 5/6/2016 12:43pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) is doing an 'awfully good job' with his rehab, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Huddle Up: All signs point to Kaepernick sticking around, making a full recovery and competing to regain his starting QB gig in San Fran. We'll keep monitoring his offseason, though.

  • Posted: 4/21/2016 4:28pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's trade discussions with the Denver Broncos are dormant, according to Broncos president John Elway.

Huddle Up: Unless the Niners wind up getting a QB high in the draft, Kaepernick might stay and battle it out with Blaine Gabbert for the starting role as the former would still be looking at a significant pay cut if traded to the Broncos.

  • Posted: 4/14/2016 9:45am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's trade to the Denver Broncos could be done, in the opinion of ESPN analyst Mark Dominik. The deal likely hinges on the 49ers drafting a quarterback.

Huddle Up: The Broncos have freed up cap space, so their hurdle would be coming to terms with Kaepernick on what pay cut he'd be willing to take. The Niners could wait to see what quarterback they can acquire with the seventh pick, but it's pretty obvious Kaepernick is not in their plans regardless of whether or not they select a quarterback. Not sure what QBs are available for them would

  • Posted: 4/5/2016 11:17am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will not take a pay cut in order to be acquired by the Denver Broncos, nor will the 49ers pay off part of the deal to make a trade happen.

Huddle Up: Tough to fault a guy for hanging on to an additional $7 mil for a lower-pressure backup job on a team with lower expectations. Next year when the 49ers can unload him without the cap hit he can either build on whatever success he finds in San Francisco this season or start fresh elsewhere.

  • Posted: 4/3/2016 1:52pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is owed $11.9 million in 2016, and the Denver Broncos want the 49ers to pay $4.9 million of his salary to facilitate a trade. The 49ers have been unwilling, according to a source. A high-level source says 'it would take two seconds' for the teams to finalize the proposed deal. The compensation in the trade is a non-issue, per sources familiar with deal. It will be a mid-round pick and sources from both teams said that will not be any holdup and they can 'finalize it with one phone call.'

Huddle Up: Some contract and cap wrangling is all that stands in the way of a deal, and it sounds like it will get done sooner rather than later. Kaepernick's numbers -- particularly his key passing stats -- are trending the wrong way since he became a starter in 2012, but perhaps leaving an all-around declining organization and taking over the reins of the defending champs is just what Kaepernick needs, reduced salary or not.

  • Posted: 4/1/2016 12:26am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was not released prior to the deadline Thursday, March 31, and Kaepernick's $11.9 million will now be fully guaranteed for 2016. Kaepernick could still be traded, however, especially as the NFL Draft nears.

Huddle Up: Kaepernick's injury recovery kicked in the guarantee, but that doesn't mean a team that trades for the QB couldn't ask him to take a pay cut.

  • Posted: 3/31/2016 3:50pm ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick would have to reduce his base salary to around $7 million if the Denver Broncos were to land him, according to a source.

Huddle Up: The Kaepernick-to-Denver rumors have quieted a bit of late, partly because the Broncos are up against the cap and might be turning their focus toward drafting a QB and/or finding a cheaper veteran option.

  • Posted: 3/29/2016 11:04am ET

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will remain with the 49ers. The team would have to fully guarantee his 2016 base salary now if he remains on the roster past April 1.

Huddle Up: The Niners seem willing to pay Kaepernick $13 million to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job, as opposed to releasing him and getting nothing in return but a salary cap hit. There is still time for another team to make an offer the 49ers can't refuse, but at this point that seems unlikely.
