MLive.com reports Detroit Lions WR Dennis Northcutt likely will beat out WR Ronald Curry for the team's slot receiver job during training camp.
The Huddle Take: The slot is where Northcutt has excelled in his career, and with a big tight end threat and double coverage on Calvin Johnson, this could be a nice little sleeper situation developing. Keep an eye on how things go in early August.

The Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions newly added WR Dennis Northcutt said he knows a lot of the team's offense already. He studied the team's playbook on his way home from Detroit on an airplane after taking his physical with the Lions. He said by the time training camp arrives, he will know the entire offense. He is expected to play in the slot, but Northcutt mentioned he can play anywhere.
The Huddle Take: Northcutt projects, as of now at least, as the Lions' No. 2 receiver behind Calvin Johnson -- unless you believe Keary Colbert, Ronald Curry or one of the other eight players listed on the Detroit WR depth chart will supplant him in that role. If Northcutt does play mostly in the slot, he would be comparable to Mike Furrey, whose best season with the Lions was 2006. That season, Furrey had six touchdowns and 1,086 yards receiving.

John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Detroit Lions have traded S Gerald Alexander to the Jacksonville Jaguars for WR Dennis Northcutt, according to multiple sources. The trade was agreed upon Friday, June 26, and is expected to be finalized next week.
The Huddle Take: Northcutt will compete with Ronald Curry for looks in the slot in Detroit, as he's not likely to unseat either Calvin Johnson or Bryant Johnson as a starter.

The Times-Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars WRs Torry Holt and Mike Walker will likely start minicamp as starters on the outside and WR Dennis Northcutt will work as the team's slot receiver in three receiver sets.
The Huddle Take: Rookies Mike Thomas, Jarrett Dillard, and Tyquan Underwood will fight for spots behind that trio, along with the likes of Troy Williamson, D'Juan Woods, and Nate Hughes.
