San Francisco 49ers DL Justin Smith (triceps) could be ready to participate late in the team's offseason workout program. Smith is scheduled to undergo surgery this week for a partially-torn triceps.
Huddle Up: Smith Cowboyed Up, played through the postseason pain and helped carry the Niners to the brink of a Super Bowl title, but it's now time for some much-needed down time for the DE, who will be 34 in September and is nearing his final rodeo. Expect a healed Smith to be key contributor and veteran presence on what should be one of the league's top defenses again next season.

San Francisco 49ers DL Justin Smith (triceps) practiced at full strength Wednesday, Jan. 23, and showed no signs of any lingering issues from the injury.
Huddle Up: Smith has had at least 4 solo tackles in each of the Niners' 2 playoff wins so far, and his on-field presence alone has seemed to lift his defensive teammates.
Posted: 1/15/2013 12:52pm et
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said DE Justin Smith (elbow, triceps) came out of the Divisional Round playoff game fine and should be able to play in the NFC Championship Game.
Huddle Up: Smith had 5 total tackles, including 4 solo stops, in the divisional-round win and definitely appeared to come out of the contest no worse for wear.
Posted: 1/8/2013 9:57pm et
San Francisco 49ers DL Justin Smith (triceps) fully participated in practice Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Huddle Up: If Smith can play somewhat effectively through his partially-torn triceps Saturday night, it will be bad news for the Packers, who surrendered the second-most sacks (51) in the league during the regular season.
Posted: 1/5/2013 10:17am et
San Francisco 49ers DL Justin Smith is hopeful of contributing in the playoffs, which begins Jan. 12 for the team. He is trying to play through a partial tear of his left triceps tendon, which he suffered Dec. 16. He is expected to have offseason surgery to fully reattach the tendon. He will likely have a four-to-six-month rehabilitation.
Huddle Up: Smith has been limited by the injury of late, and there's not much anything other than surgery and rehab will do for it at this point. Even if the Niners play into February, the full rehab schedule would put Smith back on the field in time for the start of training camp.
Posted: 1/3/2013 11:09pm et
San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith (partially-torn triceps) said he believes he will be ready to play in the Divisional Round playoff game. 'I think it's just a matter of getting out there and going. You just go out there and play until you can't and be ready. I feel like I'll be ready. I really wasn't trying to pay attention to it (in practice), honestly. You can't worry about it in the game, so try not to worry about it now and go on from there,' Smith said.
Huddle Up: Smith isn't going to be close to 100 percent even if he does play, but he's one of the league's toughest players and a valuable on-field, veteran leader for the Niners.
Posted: 12/29/2012 6:37pm et
San Francisco 49ers DT Justin Smith (elbow, triceps) missed all 3 of the team's main practices this week and he is listed as doubtful for Week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Huddle Up: The Niners' D suffered a big blow when Smith the Week 15 win over the Patriots with a partially -torn triceps and his loss was felt in last week's 42-13 thumping at the hands of the Sehawks. The team is hoping some rest will do the trick with the playoffs looming, but triceps tears and linemen never are a good mix.
Posted: 12/27/2012 6:58pm et
San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith has a partially-torn left triceps, according to a source with knowledge of the injury. The injury likely will require surgery in the offseason, but Smith and the 49ers are hoping he can tolerate the pain enough to be effective during the playoffs.
Huddle Up: It definitely doesn't sound as if Smith will play in Week 17 and would be lucky to be able to function in the postseason. In all, a tough blow for one of the league's top defenses.
