Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said RB Kevin Smith remains the team's primary running back despite RB Maurice Morris sharing the load with Smith in Week 8 and being effective. Schwartz said the workload split was the result of a shoulder injury to Smith during the game. "I don't think that anything has changed from the fact of Kevin is our lead running back and Maurice is the complementary running back," Schwartz said. Smith started in Week 8 and had 16 carries for 45 yards. Morris had 14 carries for 63 yards.

The Huddle Take: Smith has been dealing with a nagging shoulder injury for some time, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him cede a few carries each week to Morris. However, when healthy (or reasonably close) Smith is the vastly superior back and it appears as if Schwartz knows it.

DetroitLions.com reports Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (shoulder) said he has not suffered any bone damage in his shoulder. Smith said, "I mean, I'm not ready to play if we had to play a game tomorrow and that's from the general soreness, but I'm 22 years old and I usually heal pretty fast. There's nothing. I don't have any bone damage or anything like that. It's just icing down, what you have to do in the NFL. You're not going to be healthy a lot of weeks, so I got to spend most of the hours of the day icing down, getting treatment, to get myself back." Head coach Jim Schwartz said the team is waiting for test results on Smith's shoulder before deciding how to move forward. If Smith is forced to sit out Week 4, he would be replaced by RB Maurice Morris.

The Huddle Take: Don't be surprised to see Morris get the start Sunday, even though Smith could see some playing time. Chicago's tough defense won't be good for Smith's shoulder, so the team will likely just put him in for a few passes, where he excels. Look for Morris to have a solid day rushing for at least one week.

Scout.com reports the Detroit Lions have signed unrestricted free-agent RB Maurice Morris to a three-year deal worth $7 million.

The Huddle Take: Morris was okay in spot relief of Shaun Alexander and as part of a three-headed backfield in Seattle last season. He'll be available to spell Kevin Smith for a handful of carries in Detroit.
