Karen Guregian, of The Boston Herald, reports New England Patriots TE Chris Baker has emerged as the team's top tight end. TE Benjamin Watson recently returned from an undisclosed injury, and he mostly played on special teams during the team's most recent preseason game.
The Huddle Take: Baker is tied with Randy Moss for the Patriots' team lead with two touchdowns, and both of them came from Tom Brady. With no real go-to guy in the running game, it wouldn't be at all surprising if a few red zone looks were directed at Baker this season.
Posted: 3/6/2009 6:15pm et
Updating a previous report, the Boston Globe reports New England Patriots TE Chris Baker signed a five-year deal worth $14.4 million. However, the contract can turn into a two-year deal worth $5.3 million if the Patriots do not pick up a $1.2 million option bonus in 2011.
The Huddle Take: With Randy Moss and Wes Welker as the primary targets, Baker will be at best a secondary option in the Patriots' passing game.
Posted: 2/27/2009 1:17pm et
NFL.com reports the New England Patriots have agreed to terms with free-agent TE Chris Baker. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The Huddle Take: Baker brings a little AFC East insight and a decent helping of versatility to the Patriots, who have been inconsistent with their use of tight ends the past few seasons.
Posted: 2/20/2009 2:00pm et
The NFL Network reports the New York Jets have released TE Chris Baker. The Jets would like to re-sign Baker, but he will test the free agent market before deciding on which team to sign.
The Huddle Take: Baker and the Jets squabbled last offseason when Baker wanted to be released; now he'll get his opportunity to see if he's as valuable a player as he believes he is.
