New York Jets QB David Garrard will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for the team's starting quarterback job, and if he stays healthy, may very well be the Week 1 starter, according to a rival team executive.

Huddle Up: Garrard, who hasn't taken a regular-season snap since 2010, is the forgotten man in the Jets' new-look QB circus with the drafting of Geno Smith and the headlines surrounding incumbent Mark Sanchez. Garrard's path to starting likely would involve Sanchez's release and Smith's obvious inexperience -- a scenario that really isn't too far-fetched given the lofty numbers in Sanchez's contract and the concerns surrounding Smith.

The New York Jets signed QB David Garrard Monday, Mar. 11. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Huddle Up: Garrard will serve as the safety net to Mark Sanchez. He's slightly more low-profile than the Jets' previous backup quarterback.

The Carolina Panthers might show an interest in free-agent QB David Garrard (Dolphins). He has a history with offensive coordinator Mike Shula, and the team might have a need for a backup quarterback if QB Derek Anderson is not brought back.

Huddle Up: Garrard at least has a similar skill set to Panthers' starter Cam Newton so the team wouldn't have to change much if the No. 2 man was pressed into action. Still, Garrard and his reps are going to have to do some strong selling after the QB has missed the past 2 seasons with injuries.

The New York Jets are nearing a deal with free-agent QB David Garrard.

Huddle Up: If he's able to stay healthy--something he's had trouble with the past few seasons--Garrard offers competition for Mark Sanchez, or at least a safety net if (when?) Sanchez struggles.

Updating a previous report, the New York Jets worked out QB David Garrard (Dolphins) Thursday, Feb. 28, but they have concerns about his age and previous injuries.

Huddle Up: Concerns might be a a kind term as Garrard turned 35 on Valentine's Day and hasn't taken a meaningful NFL snap (regular-season or playoffs) since Dec. 26, 2010.

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard was released Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Huddle Up: This is one of the sad tales this preseason as Garrard went from being the front- runner to start for the Dolphins to the waiver wire once again.

Posted: 8/30/2012 4:22pm et

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard (knee) may not make the final roster because of the knee surgery he had early in camp. Garrard indicated earlier this week that he is not able to jog or put any real pressure on his knee.

Huddle Up: The twists and turns of the NFL definitely turned against Garrard, who prior to the preseason was in line to be the Dolphins' starting QB. Now, it looks like rookie Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore will be running the show in South Beach, while Garrard, who missed the 2011 season with a back injury, will once again be looking for work.

Updating previous reports, Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard (knee) said doctors told him he is expected to miss two to four weeks after his arthroscopic knee surgery. Garrard said nothing happened during practice and it is just wear and tear over the years.

Huddle Up: The Miami quarterback situation continues to be musical chairs and throwing injuries into the equation makes it all the less appealing. Until Ryan Tannehill takes over, the starting quarterback in Miami will be a temporary job for whomever has it.

Posted: 8/6/2012 11:45am et

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard appears to have the inside track on the team's starting quarterback job. Garrard continues to take the majority of snaps with the first-team offense. Head coach Joe Philbin said the team's starting quarterback competition remains very close at this point, and that he's been pleased with the performances of Garrard, Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill thus far in training camp. The Dolphins maintain they won't name a starter until after the third preseason game, but Garrard is leading the race so far.

Huddle Up: Garrard might have limited fantasy value as a bye-week replacement if he's healthy and able to add some running stats to his mix, but until the Dolphins get some receivers the only real fantasy value from this group is Tannehill in dynasty leagues.

Posted: 8/3/2012 7:11pm et

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard appears to be the clear favorite for the starting quarterback job, but his performance during the first two preseason game will factor in heavily in the decision.

Huddle Up: Garrard may have gotten the early jump on incumbent Matt Moore and first-round pick Ryan Tannehill, but it's far too early to jump to any conclusions here. The preseason games will tell the story. Garrard sat out last season with a back injury and clearly has the most starting experience out of the bunch, but none of the three figure to be anything more than a deep-league fantasy backup this season.

Posted: 7/27/2012 3:58pm et

Miami Dolphins QBs Matt Moore and David Garrard split reps with the first-team offense during practice Friday, July 27. Moore received the first snaps during team drills.

Huddle Up: Rookie Ryan Tannehill remains unsigned. Conventional wisdom says Garrard edges out Moore for the start on Opening Day.

Posted: 7/9/2012 11:44am et

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard appears to be slightly ahead of QB Matt Moore and rookie QB Ryan Tannehill for the starting job, but head coach Joe Philbin characterizes the battle as "close." The starter will be determined on the field during training camp and into the preseason. First-round pick Ryan Tannehill is not completely out of the running for the No. 1 job with the team, but he received by far the fewest first-team reps during offseason workouts.

Huddle Up: The Dolphins have a pair of capable place-holders while Tannehill adjusts to the NFL, with Garrard holding the early edge. Miami's passing game isn't particularly fantasy-friendly, but if the back injury that cost Garrard the 2011 season has healed he brings a little something to the table as a runner.

Posted: 6/18/2012 2:22am et

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard reportedly appeared crisp in organized team activities, and he has done extra work to strengthen the muscles in his back following surgery. Garrard is not considered a long-term option at quarterback, but he could very well win the three-way battle with QBs Matt Moore and Ryan Tannehill if he proves to be durable.

Huddle Up: The Dolphins don't have much in the way of a receiving corps, so their quarterback isn't likely to be much of a fantasy helper anyway. And at this juncture there's no clear-cut winner, making this a situation to avoid on draft day.
