San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is the team's starting quarterback, and the team intends to keep it that way for a while, according to general manager Tom Telesco.

Huddle Up: So much for the drama of a three-way trade involving the second overall pick in the upcoming draft. Now we'll just have to wait for the Browns to start making their move.

  • Posted: 4/21/2015 5:15pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has been present for the start of off-season workouts this week, as expected. It is business as usual for Rivers.

Huddle Up: Rivers played through a nagging rib issue and finished ninth among all QBs with 349 fantasy points a season ago, but the trade rumors linking the 33-year-old QB with the Titans aren't going away so see where Rivers and the Bolts stand after we get through the draft.

  • Posted: 4/15/2015 9:24am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is under contract for one more season, and he has expressed a desire to play out his deal. However, the Chargers might be interested in trading up to draft University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 pick currently held by the TennesseeTitans. Tennessee head coach Ken Whisenhunt was the Chargers offensive coordinator in 2013, and offensive coordinator Jason Michael was on the San Diego staff, too.

Huddle Up: The Chargers worked out Mariota Tuesday, adding fuel to the fire. It would be an intriguing move that would immediate give Titans receivers additional fantasy value, but there are plenty of hurdles for the Chargers, who currently pick 17th, to overcome before we start speculating on Rivers-to-Justin Hunter.

  • Posted: 3/19/2015 11:21pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers likely will not be traded even though he plans to play out his current contract, according to sources. The team wants to sign Rivers to a long-term contract and could use the franchise tag on him next offseason.

Huddle Up: In either case, expect Rivers to remain the S.D. QB for at least a couple more seasons after finishing ninth among quarterbacks with 349 fantasy points last season.

  • Posted: 3/19/2015 12:26am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers isn't currently thinking about a contract extension with the team, but he believes he'll play out his current contract that ends after the 2015 season. 'What I can control and all I know as of today, I am signed up for one more year,' Rivers said. 'I guess things could change, but with all the uncertainty in many aspects, I don't see it changing before camp gets here, and when camp gets here I'm even more certain to play it out.' He won't rule out playing in Los Angeles if the team moves there, but there are more appealing cities for he and his family. The Chargers could put the franchise tag on Rivers for 2016, and there is speculation brewing that San Diego is prepared for a future without Rivers.

Huddle Up: Word on the street is that the Chargers might also be considering making a run at Marcus Mariota. Whether that would require including Rivers in the trade remains to be seen, but it would certainly ease the transition for both team and player if Mariota had a year to understudy behind Rivers before taking over the team next year. It's a process similar to when the Bolts let Drew Brees leave and handed the job to Rivers.

  • Posted: 3/18/2015 12:04am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) has been working out nearly every day at Chargers Park, although not to the level he normally would be at this time of year. Still, he declared Tuesday, March 17, that he will be ready for the team's offseason program. There are also rumors the team could be interested in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota, and the team could be preparing for a future without Rivers. There have been no talks between the team and Rivers, and the team could conceivably place a franchise tag on him next offseason.

Huddle Up: Rivers, who will turn 34 in December, threw for 4,286 yards and 31 TDs last season but also tied for the league lead with 18 interceptions and has thrown 64 picks over the last four seasons. The Bolts also have had only two playoff berths and one postseason win over the last six seasons so they may indeed be mapping out the road ahead.

  • Posted: 2/20/2015 4:55pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the team will have discussions on a contract extension at an appropriate time, but no discussions are scheduled for this week according to general manager Tom Telesco.

Huddle Up: Rivers' current 6-year deal runs through this season, and an extension would essentially tie the 33-year-old QB to the Bolts for the rest of his career.

  • Posted: 2/11/2015 12:05am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) said he doesn't need surgery to repair the bulging disk in his back. 'At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery,' Rivers said. 'We'll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I'm back to my regular workouts and running around. Me and my wife played a little tennis the other day. I've hit the golf ball a few times, so I'm actually on the up and up. So I'm pretty excited.'

Huddle Up: No postseason berth and a month-and-a-half away from the weekly NFL grind can do wonders, and it looks like the 33-year-old Rivers could enter his 12th pro season in 2015 without having to go under the knife. Stay tuned ...

  • Posted: 1/18/2015 11:45pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers will not play in the 2015 Pro Bowl, even though a roster spot has opened up.

Huddle Up: Yeah, don't think anybody thought Rivers was Pro Bowl-bound after he gutted out the back issues, namely a bulging disc, that plagued him the latter part of the season.

  • Posted: 1/2/2015 12:16am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and the team will work on a long-term deal, according to general manager Tom Telesco. Rivers is set to become a free agent after the 2015 season. Telesco noted he wants Rivers to retire as a Charger.

Huddle Up: Rivers, who will turn 34 next December, figures to land one final deal that will allow him to finish his career in San Diego. Playing with a bad back for much of the latter half of the season and tying for the league lead with 19 interceptions, Rivers still had one of his better campaigns with 4,286 yards and 31 TD tosses.

  • Posted: 12/23/2014 12:41am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back), who is playing with a bulging disc in his back, isn't dealing with a career-threatening injury if he continues to play, according to head coach Mike McCoy. Rivers is expected to play in Week 17 against the Kansas City Chiefs, but he may sit out of practice Monday, Dec. 22, and Tuesday, Dec. 23, to rest.

Huddle Up: With a number of QB situations unsettled going into Week 17, Rivers is certainly a strong final-week fantasy option as he will be counted on heavily in another must-win game for the Chargers.

  • Posted: 12/22/2014 5:12pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) will play Sunday, Dec. 28, according to head coach Mike McCoy. Rivers has been dealing with a bulging disk in his back.

Huddle Up: Rivers has been playing through pain but with the Chargers still in the playoff mix, he'll continue to gut it out. Rivers has a tough matchup against the Chiefs this week.

  • Posted: 12/19/2014 10:38am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) looked good throwing the ball in the practice Thursday, Dec. 18, according to head coach Mike McCoy. 'Philip had an outstanding day,' McCoy said. 'A ball did not hit the ground in all the throws he made today. Philip was Philip, so he'll be ready to roll.'

Huddle Up: We've been hearing the "Rivers is hurt" talk for a couple weeks now, but for championship week it appears all systems are go for him to be in the lineup as per usual.

  • Posted: 12/18/2014 10:12am ET

Updating previous reports, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back) is battling a back injury that is more severe than the team has acknowledged, according to a league source. Rivers' back injury was quietly added to San Diego's injury report last week, to go along with the rib injury he has been battling for weeks. By now, Rivers' rib injuries are improved, making his back injury the significant issue, a league source said.

Huddle Up: Rivers has played through a torn ACL before, so playing through a back injury seems like par for the course for him. However, you have to think such an injury impacts Rivers' effectiveness; so does losing Keenan Allen to a busted collarbone.

  • Posted: 12/17/2014 6:44pm ET

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (chest, back) took part in a walkthrough Wednesday, Dec. 17, but didn't take part in practice, but he fully expects to play in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers. 'At this point in the week I think there's no doubt,' Rivers said. TE Antonio Gates said Rivers has been dealing with a 'very severe rib injury' in mid-November. Rivers has started 142 straight games, and he thinks sitting out practice this week will help him play this weekend.

Huddle Up: Yeah, Rivers will be out there Saturday night, but his stock is lowered this week given his recent slump and the the loss of top WR Keenan Allen to injury.

  • Posted: 12/16/2014 7:35pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (back, chest) said he's in good health and ready to play against the San Francisco 49ers this week.

Huddle Up: Rivers will be good to go Saturday against the Niners, but it's been a struggle for the QB of late as he's thrown for only 421 yards, two TDs and three interceptions in back-to-back home losses to the Patriots and Broncos. Weigh your starting options carefully.

  • Posted: 12/2/2014 4:43pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers has been good all season long against blitzes, and the same rung true in the team's Week 13 win over the Baltimore Ravens. Rivers was 14-for-16 for 117 yards and two touchdowns against at least five rushers against the Ravens, according to ESPN Stats & Information. He was 12-for-13 for 172 yards and two touchdowns when Baltimore sent at least one defensive back as a pass rusher. Rivers also went 8-for-8 for 156 yards on third down in the game, and no quarterback has a higher completion percentage than him at 67.5 percent this year.

Huddle Up: In rallying the Bolts to a win this past Sunday, Rivers had his first multi-TD-pass game since Week 8 and his first 300-yard game since Week 6. Those who are starting him again this week can hope for an aerial shootout to develop between Rivers and Tom Brady on Sunday night.

  • Posted: 11/18/2014 12:19am ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (rib) is not receiving treatment on the rib injury he suffered in Week 11, according to head coach Mike McCoy.

Huddle Up: An MVP candidate and sure-fire every-week fantasy starter only a month ago, Rivers has thrown for a combined 338 yards, 1 TD and 3 interceptions over the last 2 games and all the injury reports have Bolt fans and fantasy GMs really wondering about the QB's health.

  • Posted: 11/16/2014 11:46pm ET

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers (ribs) suffered a rib injury in the fourth quarter of the Week 11 game against the Oakland Raiders. TE Antonio Gates said Sunday, Nov. 16, Rivers has been playing with a severe rib injury, but 'he's been toughing it out these last three or four weeks.' Rivers downplayed the situation, and said he is no more banged up than any other quarterback in the league.

Huddle Up: Rivers' play has declined after a torrid start to the season. The injury to his ribs could be a reason why. Rivers will be evaluated again on Monday. Rivers and the Chargers face a Rams defense Sunday that has been red hot of late.
