NFL.com reports the New Orleans Saints have re-signed LB Jonathan Vilma to a five-year, $34 million contract that includes $17 million guaranteed and $23 million in the first three years.
The Huddle Take: The Saints exposed Vilma to free agency in order to avoid sending a second-round pick to the Jets—which would have then forced them to give their first-round pick to the Giants as part of the Jeremy Shockey trade. He'll return to the middle of the Saints defense, where he recorded 132 tackles a year ago.

The New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports Saints LB Jonathan Vilma's agent, Mitch Frankel, says Vilma will fight charges of reckless driving and resisting arrest. Frankel said, "When it occurred, he didn't know why he was pulled over. Clearly he's going to challenge the charges, and he doesn't agree with them."
The Huddle Take: Hey, if he challenged the officers at the scene it would only make since he would challenge the charges. However, since NFL czar Roger Goodell doesn't need to wait for a guilty verdict to level his own brand of justice, we'll see if this incident costs Vilma a game or a paycheck heading into 2009.

ESPN.com reports New Orleans Saints LB Jonathan Vilma was arrested Friday, Jan. 16, in Miami after a traffic stop, according to WSVN-TV in Miami. Vilma was speeding in and out of traffic and ran a red light, according to the police report. Police say Vilma became belligerent with officers and was arrested and booked on reckless driving and resisting arrest. A team spokesman said alcohol was not involved and that Vilma has been released from custody.
The Huddle Take: Looks like the Saints will have to reset their offseason "Arrest-Free Workplace" sign.
