Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant are expected to compete for the starting split end receiver job during training camp.

Huddle Up: Wheaton caught only 6 passes for 64 yards as a rookie last season, while Bryant is an untested 4th-round pick out of Clemson so don't expect any 2013 Emmanuel Sanders' figures (67-740-6) from the winner here.

The Pittsburgh Steelers likely will give WR Markus Wheaton every opportunity to win a starting job during training camp.

Huddle Up: Wheaton has Mike Wallace-like speed, and with both Wallace and Emmanuel Sanders departing over the previous two offseasons Ben Roethlisberger has a need for a target to step up.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton underwent minor finger surgery this offseason.

Huddle Up: The Steelers have signed FA Lance Moore (Saints), but it's Wheaton -- the team's 3rd-round pick in 2013 -- who is primed to start opposite Antonio Brown after a 6-catch, 64-yard rookie campaign.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be content letting impending free-agent WR Emmanuel Sanders walk in free agency with WR Markus Wheaton waiting in the wings to take his starting spot.

Huddle Up: Sanders hit career highs across the board with 67 receptions for 740 yards and 6 TDs in 2013, and Wheaton -- a 2013 3rd-round pick out of Oregon State -- is still somewhat of an unknown quantity after logging only 6 catches for 64 yards as a rookie. In other words, fantasy GMs will have to draft Wheaton on his potential rather than production if he does indeed step in for Sanders.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (pinkie) has not been ruled out from returning to face the New England Patriots in Week 9 after rehabbing from a broken pinkie finger.

Huddle Up: Wheaton, a preseason sleeper on some lists, only has 3 catches for 26 yards in 4 games so far and his return could translate into a dip in targets for Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton (finger) said he will not play Week 6 because of a broken pinkie. He said he will not get the stitches out of the finger until next week.

Huddle Up: In case you were counting on Wheaton for Week 6, don't.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said WR Markus Wheaton will have a bigger role in the offense moving forward.

Huddle Up: The speedy Wheaton, the Steelers' 3rd-round pick, has yet to log a reception and he'll find it hard to consistently produce given the across-the-board struggles in the team's offense right now.
