The Denver Broncos released TE Joel Dreessen with a failed physical designation Tuesday, July 22.

Huddle Up: No surprise here as the writing had been on the wall for the injury-hampered TE, leaving Jacob Tamme and Virgil Green behind stud starter Julius Thomas. Dreessen had a career year (41-356-5) two seasons ago in his Denver debut, but the emergence of Thomas and nagging knee issues limited him to a 7-47-1 2013 season.

Denver Broncos TE Joel Dreessen hasn't participated in the team's offseason program due to knee surgery.

Huddle Up: Dreessen, the Broncos' fourth TE on many depth chart, caught only 7 passes for 47 yards and 1 TD last season and is in real danger of not making the final roster.

The Denver Broncos may release TEs Jacob Tamme and Joel Dreessen this offseason in order to create some salary cap space. Tamme is scheduled to have a $3.5 million salary cap figure next season, while Dreessen is scheduled to have a cap figure of over $3 million.

Huddle Up: While both Tamme and Dreessen are solid players, neither is a must-have in the Broncos' Peyton Manning-led attack. Of course, the advantages to catching passes from Manning are obvious so one or both of the veteran tight ends could opt to re-work their deal in order to save the Broncos some money and remain in Denver.

Denver Broncos TE Joel Dreessen (knee) will try to play in the regular season opener Thursday, Sept. 5, against the Baltimore Ravens, but he will be listed as questionable at best, according to Denver Post beat writer Mike Klis.

Huddle Up: You can't count on Dreessen or even Jacob Tamme at this point, and the Mile High City TE to own right now is late-round sleeper Julius Thomas, who led the team in receiving (12-123) this preseason.

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos TE Joel Dreessen (knee) will have arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to further clean up the join, a person with knowledge of the situation said Sunday, Aug. 4. He is expected to miss the remainder of training camp as a result of the procedure.

Huddle Up: Dreessen should continue to drop like a rock on draft boards. In the meantime, with Jacob Tamme also currently sidelined with a quadriceps issue, the door has swung wide open for third-year TE Julius Thomas, a 6-foot-5 former college hoops player who already was making a bid for playing time before the injuries to the 2 TEs ahead of him on the depth chart. See if he can make more of his opportunity in the first few preseason contests.

Posted: 8/4/2013 3:58pm et

Denver Broncos TE Joel Dreessen (knee) is expected to miss at least two more weeks after suffering a setback in his recovery from kneecap surgery.

Huddle Up: This isn't your run-of-the-mill knee issue, and with Jacob Tamme (thigh) also missing time so far in camp, it's opened the door for Julius Thomas and Virgil Green to show what they can do with the No. 1 unit.
