Updating a previous report, the Star-Ledger reports New York Giants DL Mathias Kiwanuka was able to walk around the locker room after X-rays came back negative on his left ankle.
The Huddle Take: Those watching last night's game—especially Giants fans or those who added Kiwanuka to their IDP squad when Osi Umenyiora went down—had to be concerned, because the injury did not look good. A negative X-ray is a positive, as is Kiwanuka walking around the locker room. And the Giants pick up a couple extra days for him to heal before next week's tilt.

The Associated Press reports New York Giants DE Mathias Kiwanuka (ankle) suffered an ankle injury on the final play of the team's Week 1 game.
The Huddle Take: The extent of Kiwanuka's injury will be evaluated further on Friday as this would be a huge setback for a New York defense that has fallen on hard times already with an injury to star DE Osi Umenyiora and the retirement of Michael Strahan. The Giants are a preseason No. 1 defense for fantasy teams but any further losses on the defensive front could spell trouble for the defending Super Bowl champs.

Giants.com reports that DL Mathias Kiwanuka worked at right defensive end Thursday, Aug. 28, for the first time since replacing DL Osi Umenyiora (knee). Kiwanuka recorded a sack in the Giants' preseason finale against the Patriots.
The Huddle Take: If any team has the personnel to absorb the loss of a Pro Bowl defensive end, it's the Giants. Make sure Kiwanuka is DL-eligible in your IDP league, because in his new role he won't log the tackles required from an IDP linebacker. That said, he's certainly in position to jack up his sack totals.

Giants.com, reports that LB Mathias Kiwanuka, who was drafted as a defensive end and played there during his rookie season, could replace DL Osi Umenyiora (knee). The report adds that head coach Tom Coughlin said he would like to talk to his players before making any decisions.
The Huddle Take: There is also talk the Giants could ask Michael Strahan to come out of retirement to help fill the void left by Umenyiora's season-ending injury. While it's never good to lose a Pro Bowl performer, the Giants' defense does have some options to prevent the wheels from falling off as they prepare to defend their Super Bowl title.

The Giants.com reports New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said LB Mathias Kiwanuka (groin) has a slight groin strain.
The Huddle Take: Kiwanuka has been a key part of the Giants steller defensive unit and looks to be more involved this season with Michael Strahan no longer part of the team. Hopefully the groin strain will not linger as Kiwanuka and the Giants defense are poised to be one of the leagues best this season. Fantasy owners should watch the talented linebackers' status through preseason to make sure he is able to participate at full strength to start the season.
