Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) has been more encouraged about the progress of his high right ankle sprain this week, even though he's been limited in practices so far. 'Good. We're doing everything from straight-forward running to moving laterally as well,' Johnson said. 'Things are going good. We're moving in a positive direction.' However, Johnson said a decision on whether he'll play in Week 8 against the Atlanta Falcons could come down to a game-time decision in London. Head coach Jim Caldwell said the decision will come down to doctors.

Huddle Up: Sounds like Megatron is improving, but it would still be a surprise if he plays Sunday with a bye awaiting next week.

  • Posted: 10/22/2014 10:24am ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is out of practice Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Huddle Up: Johnson's status for this weekend remains uncertain, and it's likely a situation you'll have to track right up to the Lions' early Sunday morning kickoff. The recent track record suggests if Megatron doesn't practice he either doesn't play or doesn't play well; plan accordingly.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 7:32pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) will only return in Week 8 against the Atlanta Falcons if he's 100 percent healthy, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. 'It's not going to be a thing of degrees,' Caldwell said. 'When they say he's cleared, he's ready to go and he's feeling great, when they doctors say, OK, that's when it's going to happen. It's not going to be a whole lot of in between.' Johnson has missed six straight practices.

Huddle Up: Johnson is doing more and getting closer to returning, but the 100 percent threshold is going to be awfully tough to attain this week. Prepare to be without him again.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 2:40pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) said he is back to running Tuesday, Oct. 21. Johnson sat out in Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints and appears to be trying to return sooner rather than later.

Huddle Up: Megatron did make the flight to London, but it still makes a lot more sense for the Lions to hold the star WR out for another game and then take advantage of the bye in Week 9 to get him another week of rest. Stay tuned, though.

  • Posted: 10/20/2014 10:44am ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) would not give any indication whether he would play in Week 8 against the Atlanta Falcons. After the Week 7 game Sunday, Oct. 19, he simply said, 'maybe' as he was asked about his playing status next week.

Huddle Up: Megatron was apparently not even close to playing this week; not playing in London next week, with the Lions on the bye Week 9, would give him almost a full month of recovery time.

  • Posted: 10/17/2014 2:13pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) didn't practice for the sixth straight day Friday, Oct. 17. Head coach Jim Caldwell isn't ruling him out for Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints, but did add it would take a "miracle" for him to play. Johnson said earlier this week that he sees no reason to rush back to the field until he's completely healthy.

Huddle Up: It's almost assuredly another Plan B week for Megatron owners, and, unfortunately, it's a drill they've become all too familiar with for nearly the last month now.

  • Posted: 10/15/2014 3:28pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) said there is no point in rushing back to play until he is fully healed and ready to compete at a high level. Both he and head coach Jim Caldwell have been non-committal as to whether Johnson will play in Week 7 against the New Orleans Saints. Johnson said there is still pain 'lingering there.' 'Not beating it up,' Johnson said. 'Not getting out there, rolling it again, it definitely helps you. More and more you can stay off that particular area, the faster it can heal.'

Huddle Up: While there's been no timetable set, Megatron owners need to be prepared to be without the WR until Week 10 as the Lions have 2 games, including a trip to London, before their Week 9 bye.

  • Posted: 10/13/2014 3:46pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) could miss the next two weeks after sitting out in Week 6, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. The team has a bye in Week 9. 'I do not hold a medical degree. It may appear I do from time to time to you maybe, but I don't,' Caldwell said. 'The fact of the matter is I leave it up to the doctors. Those are the professionals. They know exactly what it takes. Johnson suffered a high right ankle sprain in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers, and he's missed nine of the last 11 full practices.

Huddle Up: Owners have to play the waiting game with Megatron but it looks as if he'll miss at least one more game. That's also bad news for Matthew Stafford owners, whose numbers took a hit on Sunday with Johnson sidelined.

  • Posted: 10/10/2014 4:13pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) skipped his third straight practice of the week Friday, Oct. 10, for the first time this year. Head coach Jim Caldwell said a decision on Johnson's status for Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings has not been determined, however. 'And also, you never know. There's a possibility. A couple weeks ago, I really didn't think he'd be available but the fact of the matter is he came out after doctors looked at him and said, hey, you know what, he can go,' Caldwell said.

Huddle Up: Johnson isn't likely to play, and he can hardly be trusted in fantasy matchups even if he does, given his last 2 games. Corey Fuller, Ryan Broyles and Jeremy Ross all will see extra work if Megatron sits, but Golden Tate has been the huge beneficiary, totaling 19 targets, 15 receptions, 250 yards and a TD over the last 2 games.

  • Posted: 10/8/2014 1:55pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is dealing with a high ankle sprain but said he hopes to play in Week 6. He also said he's not frustrated that he has been being used as a decoy when on the field.

Huddle Up: Rest is probably the best medicine, and after what we've seen the last 2 games, it would be surprising to see Megatron active and playing Sunday.

  • Posted: 10/7/2014 4:09pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) has been frustrated that he has had to play at less than 100 percent on his bum ankle. 'Players always want to play. You know he is a gamer,' NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said. 'But he wants to make sure he gets this ankle healed for the long haul.' It sounds as though it's unlikely that Johnson will play in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Huddle Up: The Lions' bye isn't until Week 9 and a week or 2 of rest for Megatron is looking like the best option for all parties involved -- fantasy or reality -- given his meager production (3 catches-19 yards) while trying to play through the injury over the last 2 games.

  • Posted: 10/6/2014 12:31pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) could miss a week or two after he aggravated his ankle injury in Week 5 Sunday, Oct. 5.

Huddle Up: Megatron missing time would be a big blow to the Lions offense. Matthew Stafford's fantasy value will take a hit if Johnson is out of the lineup.

  • Posted: 10/5/2014 9:55pm ET

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) re-injured his right ankle in the third quarter of the Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills while making his only catch of the contest. Johnson grabbed his lower right leg as he went down and did not return to the game. 'I won't be certain if it's a long-term issue, but he did take a pretty good whack right there on the side of his leg,' head coach Jim Caldwell said Sunday, Oct. 5. 'They looked at it, but they'll evaluated him further, probably tomorrow and get a good look at him.'

Huddle Up: Fantasy owners will have to hold their breath until Monday. If the Lions lose Megatron. Matthew Staford's fantasy value will take a hit as well.

  • Posted: 10/3/2014 1:14pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) could miss the team's Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills if he doesn't improve soon, according to head coach Jim Caldwell. Caldwell was non-committal when asked if Johnson will play this weekend. Johnson missed practice Wednesday, Oct. 1, and Thursday, Oct. 2, but returned to practice Friday, Oct. 3. He was targeted only twice last week and had two catches for just 12 yards. Johnson has 21 catches for 341 yards and two touchdowns this season.

Huddle Up: It's rough contemplating fantasy life without Megatron, but it looks like the WR's fantasy owners might have to do just that in Week 5. Check back Sunday morning to get the final word on Johnson's status, but even if he does play, a repeat of Week 4's disaster certainly isn't out of the question and fantasy GMs might have to make the tough call.

  • Posted: 10/2/2014 8:16pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) missed his fourth practice of the season Thursday, Oct. 2. He returned to practice last Friday and played in Week 4, but he was limited in what he could do.

Huddle Up: The news continues to be troubling for Megatron owners with the WR following the same pattern as last week leading up to his 2-catch, 12-yard outing Sunday when he was used as decoy more than anything. The conundrum is that Johnson needs to be started if he's playing, so see how the rest of the week plays out.

  • Posted: 10/1/2014 3:57pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) said he's feeling much better this week than he did at the same point last week.

Huddle Up: Megatron's fantasy owners certainly are hoping so after they were dealt a 2-12-0 dud on 2 targets this past Sunday against the Jets. Johnson has another favorable matchup this week against the Bills, who allow the 11th most points to opposing fantasy WRs.

  • Posted: 9/29/2014 10:17am ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) was used as a decoy for the most part in Week 4 Sunday, Sept. 28. He caught the only two passes he was targeted in for 12 yards and laughed when he was asked if he was close to 90 percent health. He rarely played on back-to-back plays in Sunday's game and had a noticeable limp.

Huddle Up: It's kind of early in the season for Johnson to be this banged up; moreover, if he's hobbled and willing to suit up as a "decoy" he's no longer a must-start just because he's active.

  • Posted: 9/27/2014 12:23am ET

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) appears to be trending toward playing in the Week 4 game against the New York Jets after a limited practice Friday, Sept. 26. 'It was good to see him moving around a little bit,' quarterback Matthew Stafford said.

Huddle Up: Johnson is known to play through injuries, so chances are he'll be in the lineup Sunday. Megatron is always a WR1 any time he's on the field, even if he's not 100 percent.

  • Posted: 9/26/2014 2:06pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) returned to practice Friday, Sept. 26.

Huddle Up: No immediate word on how much he was able to do, but definitely a positive development after he missed the previous two practices. Stay tuned for further updates.

  • Posted: 9/25/2014 3:34pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (ankle) is not participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 25.

Huddle Up: Red flag here as it's now back-to-back missed practices for the stud wideout, who typically sits out Wednesdays anyway. Definitely see how the situation looks after Friday's practice.

  • Posted: 9/8/2014 10:43pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson finished Monday night's game with 7 catches for 164 yards and 2 TDs, topping 100 receiving yards for the 40th game in his career. He is the third fastest in NFL history to 40 career 100-yard games (107 games).

Huddle Up: Yeah, Johnson delivered in a big way for those fantasy owners who went into Monday night's doubleheader needing a Megatron-sized night from fantasy's top-ranked WR. Johnson looked like he was clearly past last season's nagging health issues and both of his TD catches (67 & 16 yards) came in the opening 10 minutes of the game.

  • Posted: 9/3/2014 3:35pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (finger, knee) has practiced all week and said his body 'feels good' entering Week 1. He said he expects to practice regularly this season after missing a lot of practice time due to injuries in 2013. Johnson had finger and knee surgeries in the offseason.

Huddle Up: Fantasy's highest-drafted WR faces a challenge out of the gate Monday night vs. a Giants' secondary that allowed the fourth-fewest points to opposing wideouts last season.

  • Posted: 8/15/2014 9:38pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (finger) was inactive for the preseason game Friday, Aug. 15, against the Oakland Raiders. WR Kris Durham made the start in his absence.

Huddle Up: The Lions have been limiting Megatron while he deals with knee and finger issues. There's nothing for fantasy owners to worry about though. Johnson should be on the field next week with Detroit's starters when the Lions take on Jacksonville.

  • Posted: 8/13/2014 6:43pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (finger) has a fabricated splint to wear on his previously injured finger for protective purposes only. Johnson had surgery on the finger after last season, but it's unclear how often he plans to wear the splint. Johnson hasn't shown any ill efffects from his finger or knee in training camp, where he has consistently beaten the team's cornerbacks in practice.

Huddle Up: The overwhelming majority of owners certainly aren't concerned about any health issues with Megatron as he currently owns the top WR ADP -- and third highest of any player -- at 4.71.

  • Posted: 7/29/2014 11:47pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is taking part in fewer reps in training camp this year than in years past and said he is trying to be smarter about his approach to practice with the goal of staying healthy the entire season. 'I'm older now,' Johnson said. 'I'm not diving for the balls anymore (in practice). Coach Caldwell has a big emphasis about us staying off the ground. I'm not playing every play in practice but they're working me in. I'm out here trying to get my extra running in after (practice) so I can keep my wind up.'

Huddle Up: Megatron still will only be 29 in Sept., but is coming off a 2013 season in which he matched his career low for games played with 14 and had three-year lows in catches (84) and receiving yards (1,492).

  • Posted: 6/11/2014 12:46am ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson is happy to be healthy and back on the practice field after injuries to his knee and finger prevented him from doing so late last season. 'It feels great to be out here playing with the guys,' Johnson said Tuesday, June 10. 'I missed a lot of practice time last year before games. You definitely feel like you need that practice time before a game, just to get on one accord with your quarterback.'

Huddle Up: A healthy Megatron will leave opposing secondary coaches feeling ill, especially now with the complementary weapons (WR Golden Tate, TE Eric Ebron) the Lions have added this offseason.

  • Posted: 5/15/2014 11:17pm ET

Despite recent rumors of the Detroit Lions potentially trading WR Calvin Johnson, his contract makes that unrealistic. Trading Johnson would create $29 million is dead salary-cap space.

Huddle Up: Unlike the other Pro Bowl wideout named Johnson -- the Texans' Andre -- who could possibly land on the trading block, this seems far too far-fetched.

  • Posted: 4/28/2014 10:02pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) attended but did not take part in the Lions' three-day minicamp last week. He is recovering from surgery on his right knee and a finger on his left hand.

Huddle Up: No reason to tax Megatron at this juncture; just get him to the field in one piece on Sundays and it's all good.

  • Posted: 1/15/2014 10:32pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee, finger) underwent minor knee surgery last week and also had surgery on his finger this week. He's recovering nicely from both procedures.

Huddle Up: Megatron had the oil changed and his Fetzer valve treated with ball bearings, gauze pads and antifreeze. He should be more than ready to resume dominating opposing secondaries by the time next fall rolls around.

  • Posted: 12/30/2013 12:45am ET

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said Sunday, Dec. 29, that WR Calvin Johnson (knee) will need offseason knee surgery, but the procedure is not considered 'major.'

Huddle Up: It's good to see that this was minor. Hopefully this cures Johnson of some of his nagging woes and he will come back stronger than ever next season.

  • Posted: 12/26/2013 10:28pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 26.

Huddle Up: Johnson was a practice no-show for the second straight day and has to be regarded as a major Week 17 question mark amid reports that surfaced this week that Johnson has been playing with a partially-torn PCL in his right knee.

  • Posted: 12/25/2013 12:41am ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) declined comment on a report that he is playing with a partially-torn posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. "Y'all will have to ask me those questions on Thursday," Johnson said Tuesday, Dec. 23. "I don't want to talk about that stuff." Head coach Jim Schwartz has said offseason surgery is not required, and that Johnson could play in the Week 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Huddle Up: It was revealed that Johnson played most of last season with broken fingers, so it's definitely possible -- and even probable -- that he's more hurt than he's letting on this season. You're still starting him if he's active in Week 17, but he's mired in an end-of-season funk with a combined 12 catches for 193 yards and no scores over his last 3 games.

  • Posted: 12/23/2013 3:46pm ET

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the team will see how WR Calvin Johnson (knee) is during the week before deciding if he will play Week 17.

Huddle Up: There is little incentive to put Johnson out there with the Lions having been eliminated last week. Keep an eye on his situation, but you might want to find an alternative.

  • Posted: 12/18/2013 12:03am ET

With the exception of a 37-yard reception in the second half and an 18-yard catch that led to a go-ahead touchdown for the Detroit Lions in the final minutes, WR Calvin Johnson didn't have much of an impact during the Lions' 18-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, Dec. 16. He finished with six catches for 98 yards while being targeted a game-high 13 times.

Huddle Up: Johnson also had several notable drops in the game and now has put together 2 poor back-to-back games with a 3-catch, 52-yard effort in a snowy Week 14 loss in Philly. Still he remains fantasy's top- ranked WR, and his fantasy owners who have weathered those 2 sub-par showings in the postseason can only hope the law of averages produces a Megatron explosion Sunday vs. the struggling Giants.

  • Posted: 11/26/2013 5:14pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Huddle Up: Missing practices but still playing -- and playing to an All-Pro level -- in games has become SOP for Megatron all season, but with the fantasy matchups now taking on extra importance, be sure to check and double-check the WR's status if you have him on your squad.

  • Posted: 11/22/2013 2:49pm ET

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Darrelle Revis said he plans on being physical with Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson in their Week 12 matchup. Revis has been playing more press coverage in recent weeks as his knee returns close to 100 percent health. The two faced each other in 2010 and Johnson was held to just one catch for 13 yards. 'My thought was always just to be physical with them,' said Revis. 'They're big guys. I feel no receiver wants to get jammed or pressed at the line, so just be physical with those guys and match what they bring to the table.'

Huddle Up: Sure, Revis presents a tough matchup and all that, but don't get too cute by even thinking of benching Megatron -- especially at this critical juncture in the season.

  • Posted: 11/21/2013 1:36pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) practiced Thursday, Nov. 21.

Huddle Up: Megatron was back after his usual Wednesday absence. He had a strong Week 11 with 6 grabs for 179 yards and 2 scores but should've been even better with Johnson not catching a pass the entire second half.

  • Posted: 11/15/2013 5:04pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) is fully expected to play in Week 11 against the Pittsburgh Steelers after returning to practice Friday, Nov. 15.

Huddle Up: Johnson caused some minor alarm by missing both the team's Wednesday and Thursday workouts, but consider him ready to put up more points this weekend.

  • Posted: 11/5/2013 8:30pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) missed the team's practice Tuesday, Nov. 5.

Huddle Up: Should be no worries here as Megatron was given an extra day of rest with the Lions coming out of their bye week.

  • Posted: 10/24/2013 12:56pm ET

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson (knee) was participating in the portion of practice open to the media Thursday, Oct. 24.

Huddle Up: Johnson's missed game and mini-slump are in the rear-view mirror and receding quickly after his 9-155-2 TD performance in Week 7. He remains among the fantasy elite.
