Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) is making progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury but is not expected to practice this week or play in the third preseason game.

Huddle Up: Austin has been sidelined for a little over a week because his injury and probably will not be back on the field until Week 1. He is expected to have a similar role this season than he had in 2016 but probably will lose some targets to Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods. He could be a late-round option in fantasy leagues but will not be a weekly starting option.

  • Posted: 8/17/2017 6:51am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) will be used in a similar role as he has in the past, according to general manager Les Snead. 'We haven't figured out how much he evolves as a receiver in this offense because he hasn't had a chance to play,' Snead said. 'Plan to see him used very similarly to how he's been used in the past. By that I mean, he's scored as a receiver, he's scored as a running back, he's scored as a returner. That's why we like him. He threatens the opposing team in many different ways. We've just got to get him healthy.'

Huddle Up: Austin offered a glimmer of hope of justifying his No. 8 overall pick status in 2015 with a 52-473-5 receiving line and a 52-434-4 rushing line. He's a small receiver that you can do a lot of things with, but the previous regime couldn't make him enough of a factor. He has WR5 viability, but it's unlikely he'll be a consistent fantasy source.

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (hamstring) will not participate in practice this week because of a hamstring injury. Head coach Sean McVay said the team is not sure if Austin will play in any preseason games.

Huddle Up: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Austin will be ready for the start of the regular season. He probably will be the No. 3 or No. 4 receiver for the Rams this season and may see fewer targets because of the addition of Sammy Watkins. He could be a No. 5 receiver in some leagues or a waiver wire option during the season.

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (wrist) was a full participant in practice Saturday, July 29, and he lined up outside and ran deep routes on several plays.

Huddle Up: It sounds like Sean McVay is indeed going to have Austin fill a DeSean Jackson-like role in the offense. However, that still makes him a boom-or-bust WR4.

  • Posted: 5/5/2017 12:34pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (wrist) will miss OTAs after undergoing surgery on his left wrist but is expected to be ready for training camp, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

Huddle Up: It's a setback for Austin - a player new head coach Sean McVay wants to use in the same way he did DeSean Jackson in Washington. Austin's absence should open up more reps for rookie Josh Reynolds, who is perhaps the team's best downfield threat anyway.

  • Posted: 5/5/2017 10:14am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is expected to establish himself as more of a downfield threat, similar to what DeSean Jackson for new head coach Sean McVay when he was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

Huddle Up: Austin has carried the ball 116 times (nearly three times more than any other receiver) and caught 75 passes behind the line of scrimmage (tied for second among receivers) over the last three years. Now, it appears McVay wants to see what the former first-round pick, who ran a 4.34 prior to getting drafted No. 8 overall in 2013, can do down the field. Expecting Austin to emulate Jackson may be too high of a standard to reach, but it does suggest McVay will use him more logically than Jeff Fisher ever did.

  • Posted: 4/29/2017 9:15pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin could move to the outside or be utilized more in the run game if WR Cooper Kupp is a better option as a slot receiver, according to beat writer Rich Hammond.

Huddle Up: The Rams have always struggled to find the best way to take advantage of Austin's game-changing speed, and the result has been an unreliable fantasy option dependent on breaking a long score. Austin is a WR4 who can be used as a Hail Mary flex play during bye weeks.

  • Posted: 12/24/2016 6:44pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin posted two grabs for 14 yards on seven targets in the Week 16 game against the San Francisco 49ers, and he added a 30-yard rushing score.

Huddle Up: Austin is a dynamic playmaker with speed to burn, but the Rams haven't been able to get him out into the open very much. If they can get better offensive line play and more stability at the quarterback position, Austin and Gurley would be the biggest beneficiaries going forward.

  • Posted: 12/8/2016 7:28pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Dec. 8.

Huddle Up: Austin is on track to return after missing Week 13. He has underwhelmed all year, but he could be worth a roll of the dice in DFS games against an Atlanta defense that has allowed the most passing yards and second-most passing scores.

  • Posted: 12/4/2016 8:11am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) will not play in Week 13's game against the New England Patriots, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Austin was listed as doubtful on the injury report and did not practice at all during the week. Kenny Britt should see most of the targets for Los Angeles and should be viewed as a WR3 or flex option in most fantasy leagues, while Todd Gurley and Brian Quick should also see more involvement in the passing game. Gurley is a viable starting option in all formats, while Quick is worthy of consideration as a flex player in deeper seasonal leagues.

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 2, and is listed as doubtful for Week 13.

Huddle Up: Austin was not able to practice this week, so there is a good chance that he will miss Week 13. Owners should still check on his status closer to game time but should have other options available. Kenny Britt probably will receive most of the targets among receivers and can be a No. 3 receiver or flex option in fantasy leagues. Todd Gurley and Brian Quick can also be more involved in the passing game. Gurley should be a starting option in all leagues, while Quick probably can only be a flex option in deeper leagues.

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (chest) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 1.

Huddle Up: It remains to be seen if Austin will play, but given his lackluster production in recent weeks, you may want to leave him on your bench in Week 13 regardless of his status.

  • Posted: 11/13/2016 1:30pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin caught two passes for 19 yards and carried the ball twice for 10 yards in Week 10 against the New York Jets.

Huddle Up: Austin is not playable at this point ... he cannot create plays on his own accord and is transparently used by the coaching staff.

  • Posted: 10/23/2016 10:45am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin caught 10 passes for 57 yards and one touchdown against the New York Giants in Week 7.

Huddle Up: Austin has been targeted at least 10 times in two of the last three games but has been held to under 60 yards in six of the seven games this season. He will continue to be the No. 1 receiver for the Rams and can be a No. 3 receiver or a flex option for owners.

  • Posted: 10/16/2016 6:25pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin posted three receptions for 24 yards in the Week 6 game against the Detroit Lions, and he added three runs for just two yards.

Huddle Up: The team wants to get the ball into Austin's hands, but Austin just cannot get into open spaces to take advantage of his blazing speed. He is only worth a look as a WR4 in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.

  • Posted: 10/9/2016 10:52pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin posted seven receptions for 59 yards on 10 targets in the Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills and he added three runs for 26 yards.

Huddle Up: Austin has 85 or more total yards from scrimmage in two of his past three games, as the team is starting find more ways to get the ball into the dynamic and versatile receiver's hands. Still, he remains more of a low-end WR3 in most fantasy leagues heading into Week 6 against the Detroit Lions.

  • Posted: 10/2/2016 10:13pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin had just two receptions for 14 yards on six targets in the Week 4 game against the Arizona Cardinals and he had one run which netted minus-6 yards.

Huddle Up: Austin is a dynamic and versatile playmaker who has the tools to be an asset to fantasy owners, but for whatever reason the Rams fail to use him correctly. He is only worth keeping around as a WR4 in deeper fantasy leagues at this point.

  • Posted: 10/2/2016 12:31pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) is officially active for the team's Week 4 game.

Huddle Up: Austin has posted decent numbers in the first three weeks of the season and has been targeted at least eight times in each of the games. He should continue to be one of the main targets in the team's passing game and can be a flex option for owners.

  • Posted: 10/2/2016 7:21am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) will play in Week 4's game against the Arizona Cardinals, according to a source.

Huddle Up: Austin had been listed as questionable on the club's most recent injury report but was a full participant in practice Friday, Sept. 30, after being limited in the two practices prior to that. He has been targeted 29 games through the first three games and should be viewed as a boom-or-bust WR3 option.

  • Posted: 9/30/2016 6:41pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) was a full participant in practice Friday, Sept. 30, and is listed as questionable for Week 4.

Huddle Up: Double check his status on Sunday, but Austin looks like a good bet to suit up. The speedy receiver can be big-play dependent, but with 29 targets through three games, the Rams are looking his way enough to take a chance on him as a WR3.

  • Posted: 9/29/2016 8:11pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin (shoulder) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 29.

Huddle Up: Austin can make big plays as a receiver, runner and returner, but he is a boom-or-bust WR3.

  • Posted: 9/20/2016 1:09pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is seventh among wide receivers with 21 targets through two weeks, but he has caught only nine passes for 63 yards.

Huddle Up: The volume is there, but Austin just hasn't gotten things going yet. The Rams as a whole have been stagnant on offense, which is a large part of Austin's early struggles. He has more value in return yardage leagues, but don't give up on him just yet. He faces a Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense that has yielded five touchdowns to wide receivers this year.

  • Posted: 9/12/2016 10:54pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin collected four receptions for 13 yards in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers and he added one run for two yards.

Huddle Up: It was an ugly night for the Rams offense, and Austin couldn't shake free in the mostly horizontal offensive attack. He has WR2 ability in fantasy leagues, but with shaky quarterback play he is more like a WR4 right now.

  • Posted: 8/27/2016 3:38pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is close to signing a four-year extension worth $42 million, including $30 million guaranteed, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Huddle Up: For an offense bereft of playmakers in the passing game, the Rams had little choice but to lock up Austin. Still, it seems like a pretty good chunk of change for a receiver who had as many carries last year as receptions (52 apiece, both career highs). The size of this contract suggests Los Angeles will continue finding ways to feed him the ball into space in order to take some pressure off Todd Gurley. While he figures to be inconsistent in fantasy again this year, he's a serviceable WR3 in most leagues.
