San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) has informed the team that he plans to retire.

Huddle Up: Sadly, it looks like it just wasn't meant to be for Lattimore, the 2013 fourth-round pick who has been trying to battle back from the two serious knee injuries he sustained at South Carolina.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) has a $1.7 million insurance policy on his contract that will compensate him should Lattimore choose to retire. Lattimore took out the policy during his junior year at South Carolina. In order to collect on the $1.7 million, Lattimore would have to file a claim and to have a doctor physically rule him unable to play.

Huddle Up: Unfortunate that Lattimore could never make it back from the knee injury that prematurely ended his college career, if that is what ultimately happens here.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) will make his season debut on the practice field Wednesday, Oct. 29, and the team will have 3 weeks to evaluate whether to bring him off the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.

Huddle Up: It's unclear what kind of role Lattimore would have if activated, but it's ust another item for Frank Gore's fantasy owners to worry about as rookie Carlos Hyde is currently cutting into Gore's already reduced workload.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) will be cleared to practice from the Non-Football Injury list following the team's Week 8 bye. The team plans to activate him to their 53-man roster for the first time in his career. Lattimore has been working his way back from a gruesome right knee injury while in college in October of 2012. He is now weighing 220 pounds after reporting to training camp at 225 pounds, and he thinks he has added quickness.

Huddle Up: Get ready to add another RB to the mix in San Fran, further trimming Fran Gore's touches and fantasy value.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) and OT Brandon Thomas (knee) were placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Monday, Aug. 25.

Huddle Up: The long road back just got a little longer for Lattimore, who will miss at least the first 6 games of the season. Meanwhile, second-round pick Carlos Hyde is firmly entrenched behind veteran starter Frank Gore.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) did not play in the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 7, as he continues to rehabilitate his knee.

Huddle Up: The extended waiting game continues for Lattimore, opening the door for additional opportunities for second-round pick Carlos Hyde.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) has not been cleared to practice yet due to lingering concerns about his surgically repaired right knee. However, he appears close to joining his teammates.

Huddle Up: The Niners drafted a running back in the second round because they weren't sold on Lattimore's recovery yet, a move that at this juncture looks to be a wise one. Anything San Francisco can get from Lattimore would be a bonus, but with all the injuries in the 49ers backfield and Frank Gore in the twilight of his career there may be no better opportunity for Lattimore than right now.
