New York Jets QB Geno Smith's (jaw) broken jaw could force him to miss the first four games of the season, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan. The Jets have a Week 5 bye, so he could return for Week 6. Maccagnan also said the Jets could add another quarterback in light of Smith's injury.

Huddle Up: In other words, count on the Ryan Fitzpatrick Show running through at least mid-October.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) may not regain his starting job when he returns if Ryan Fitzpatrick and the team is playing well without him, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Huddle Up: The franchise, which hasn't posted a winning record since 2010, isn't about to mess with any success it stumbles upon. Meanwhile, it's only the latest hurdle for Smith, who's compiled an 11-18 record as the team's starter while tossing 34 interceptions and only 25 TDs over the last two seasons.

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) was punched in the face by former Jets LB IK Enemkpali because of a dispute over money. Smith accepted a $600 plane ticket from Enemkpali to appear at his football camp in Pflugerville, Texas, on July 11, according to sources. Smith didn't show up to the camp, which took place days after someone close to Smith was killed in a motorcycle accident in Miami. After Smith did not attend, Enemkpali demanded that Smith refund him the $600 he allegedly used to purchase the plane ticket. Smith told Enemkpali he would reimburse him the money, but he had not as of Tuesday, Aug. 11. Enkempali confronted Smith about the money, and the confrontation ended in a punch and a broken jaw. A source familiar with the situation told ESPN's Josina Anderson that at the start of camp, Smith approached Enemkpali, sensing tension between the two. The source said Smith confronted Enemkpali, tried to diffuse the situation and offered to pay Enemkpali the $600.

Huddle Up: Smith's slow pay will cost him six to 10 weeks, and for now at least the Jets' starting quarterback gig as Ryan Fitzpatrick takes over.

  • Posted: 8/11/2015 2:34pm ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (jaw) will miss six to 10 weeks after suffering a broken jaw Tuesday, Aug. 11, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Smith was 'sucker punched' by reserve linebacker IK Enemkpali and will have surgery. Enemkpali, a sixth-round pick in 2014, was immediately released by the team.

Huddle Up: Just when we thought we had seen it all from the Jets, the presumptive starting QB gets cold-cocked in a what's being described as a "childish" lockerroom altercation. Nonetheless, Smith figures to be on the shelf through at least Week 3 and likely until Week 5 (Oct. 18) with the Jets having a Week 4 bye.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is absolutely the starting quarterback for the Jets, according to WR Brandon Marshall.

Huddle Up: That is until Smith's first ugly interception during a live game, and then it won't even be a New York minutes before Ryan Fitzpatrick's name starts trending on social media.

  • Posted: 8/5/2015 12:26am ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith turned the ball over for the first time in more than four practices Tuesday, Aug. 4. It was a fumble, however, so Smith is still without an interception over the same time frame.

Huddle Up: So far, so good in camp for the QB who's tossed 34 interceptions in 30 career regular-season games but the Jets will be putting a little more weight on Smith's performance when the defense starts wearing different colored helmets next week.

  • Posted: 8/2/2015 7:20pm ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick have not thrown interceptions thus far in training camp, but Smith is still the leading candidate to open the year as the starter.

Huddle Up: Make that a "very early lead" as the Jets are still two weeks away from their exhibition opener. Expect plenty of ups, downs and N.Y. media-led drama as the battle plays out over the next few weeks.

  • Posted: 7/28/2015 11:19pm ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith could be benched if he struggles early in the season, according to head coach Todd Bowles Tuesday, July 28. 'If you feel that his position or any other position is hurting the team, as a head coach, it's up to you to do something about it,' Bowles said about Smith. 'It's not a year-long thing for anybody. You earn your keep by the week. You earn your keep by the day. Ö If somebody is not doing their job, itís up to me to rectify the situation,' said Bowles.

Huddle Up: Unlike a fading Michael Vick last season, the Jets now have a solid backup in Ryan Fitzpatrick, and they won't hesitate to go to the veteran if Smith isn't showing signs of progress and can't clean up his turnover act.

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty didn't thrill head coach Todd Bowles with their play during minicamp. 'It's been up and down,' Bowles said of Smith's performances. 'He makes good throws, he makes some bad throws. There has to be more consistency for the quarterbacks overall.'

Huddle Up: Another season, same QBs concerns for the Jets, but now the fantasy ramifications are magnified with team adding WRs Brandon Marshall and second-round pick Devin Smith to incumbent Eric Decker. There's still roughly three months until the games that count arrive, though, and the hope is either Smith or Fitzpatrick settles into the starting role and at least becomes a serviceable game manager.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith threw three interceptions during minicamp Tuesday, June 9, including two in the red zone.

Huddle Up: New coach Todd Bowles and the Jets have said the starting QB gig is Smith's job to lose, and failing to take care of the ball is the quickest way for the third-year QB to lose his tenuous grip on the position as he's posted an unsightly/league-leading 4.2 interception rate (34 in 810 attempts) over his first two seasons.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith believes the Jets are his team to lead, but acknowledges the competition he'll need to face in order to win the starting job. 'There's always other guys, and there's always going to be competition. I've always welcomed it, and I still do,' Smith said. The Jets brought in QB Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason to compete with Smith and could bring in more competition via the draft.

Huddle Up: New coach usually means new quarterback, but if the Jets don't land Marcus Mariota you would have to consider Smith the front-runner in New York. And given the receiving corps the Jets are providing him, he might actually be a low-end fantasy helper.

  • Posted: 4/6/2015 4:22pm ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has a lot at stake this offseason as far as money is concerned. About 32% of Smith's compensation this year is tied to offseason attendance. Smith must participate in around 80% of offseason workouts or he could miss out on approximately $276,328.

Huddle Up: Unless the Jets wind up with Marcus Mariota in the draft, Smith is the leading candidate to start at quarterback. So with a new coach to impress as well as money on the line it makes sense for him to participate in 100 percent of the offseason workouts.

  • Posted: 3/24/2015 4:02pm ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback ahead of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick entering training camp this summer, according to new head coach Todd Bowles. 'You can't have equal first-team reps with a quarterback,' Bowles said. 'Geno will start out taking them, but that doesn't mean that Ryan can't take his spot if Ryan's playing better and performing better.' Bowles continues to say that it's too early to judge Smith off his tape alone.

Huddle Up: Sound familiar? New offseason, same challenge ahead for Smith, who's now trying to hold off Fitzpatrick instead of Michael Vick. This time around the Jets have better WR weapons with Brandon Marshall added to the mix -- but that only puts more of an onus on the QB to get the ball where it needs to go.

  • Posted: 2/26/2015 1:54am ET

New York Jets QB Geno Smith may not have big competition for the starting quarterback job, because the team is not committed to selecting a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Jets are committed to make Smith a successful starting quarterback.

Huddle Up: If Marcus Mariota is still on the board at six it will be difficult for the Jets to pass. If they are truly committed to Smith, however, they could certainly entertain offers for that selection from, say, Chip Kelly and the Eagles.
