Huddle Up: In other words, count on the Ryan Fitzpatrick Show running through at least mid-October.

Huddle Up: The franchise, which hasn't posted a winning record since 2010, isn't about to mess with any success it stumbles upon. Meanwhile, it's only the latest hurdle for Smith, who's compiled an 11-18 record as the team's starter while tossing 34 interceptions and only 25 TDs over the last two seasons.

Huddle Up: Smith's slow pay will cost him six to 10 weeks, and for now at least the Jets' starting quarterback gig as Ryan Fitzpatrick takes over.
Posted: 8/11/2015 2:34pm ET
Huddle Up: Just when we thought we had seen it all from the Jets, the presumptive starting QB gets cold-cocked in a what's being described as a "childish" lockerroom altercation. Nonetheless, Smith figures to be on the shelf through at least Week 3 and likely until Week 5 (Oct. 18) with the Jets having a Week 4 bye.

Huddle Up: That is until Smith's first ugly interception during a live game, and then it won't even be a New York minutes before Ryan Fitzpatrick's name starts trending on social media.

Huddle Up: So far, so good in camp for the QB who's tossed 34 interceptions in 30 career regular-season games but the Jets will be putting a little more weight on Smith's performance when the defense starts wearing different colored helmets next week.
Posted: 8/2/2015 7:20pm ET
Huddle Up: Make that a "very early lead" as the Jets are still two weeks away from their exhibition opener. Expect plenty of ups, downs and N.Y. media-led drama as the battle plays out over the next few weeks.
Posted: 7/28/2015 11:19pm ET
Huddle Up: Unlike a fading Michael Vick last season, the Jets now have a solid backup in Ryan Fitzpatrick, and they won't hesitate to go to the veteran if Smith isn't showing signs of progress and can't clean up his turnover act.
Posted: 6/12/2015 5:23pm ET
Huddle Up: Another season, same QBs concerns for the Jets, but now the fantasy ramifications are magnified with team adding WRs Brandon Marshall and second-round pick Devin Smith to incumbent Eric Decker. There's still roughly three months until the games that count arrive, though, and the hope is either Smith or Fitzpatrick settles into the starting role and at least becomes a serviceable game manager.

Huddle Up: New coach Todd Bowles and the Jets have said the starting QB gig is Smith's job to lose, and failing to take care of the ball is the quickest way for the third-year QB to lose his tenuous grip on the position as he's posted an unsightly/league-leading 4.2 interception rate (34 in 810 attempts) over his first two seasons.
Posted: 4/30/2015 12:11am ET
Huddle Up: New coach usually means new quarterback, but if the Jets don't land Marcus Mariota you would have to consider Smith the front-runner in New York. And given the receiving corps the Jets are providing him, he might actually be a low-end fantasy helper.
Posted: 4/6/2015 4:22pm ET
Huddle Up: Unless the Jets wind up with Marcus Mariota in the draft, Smith is the leading candidate to start at quarterback. So with a new coach to impress as well as money on the line it makes sense for him to participate in 100 percent of the offseason workouts.
Posted: 3/24/2015 4:02pm ET
Huddle Up: Sound familiar? New offseason, same challenge ahead for Smith, who's now trying to hold off Fitzpatrick instead of Michael Vick. This time around the Jets have better WR weapons with Brandon Marshall added to the mix -- but that only puts more of an onus on the QB to get the ball where it needs to go.
Posted: 2/26/2015 1:54am ET
Huddle Up: If Marcus Mariota is still on the board at six it will be difficult for the Jets to pass. If they are truly committed to Smith, however, they could certainly entertain offers for that selection from, say, Chip Kelly and the Eagles.
Posted: 2/2/2015 10:27am ET
Huddle Up: Don't expect a definitive answer until Bowles has a chance to see not only more film but also his quarterback(s) in person. At best Smith should be looking for an opportunity to compete for the starting gig in New York; he certainly hasn't done enough as a professional to be handed the job.
Posted: 1/22/2015 10:58pm ET
Huddle Up: Certainly look for the Jets to bring a QB or two this offseason -- maybe a free agent and a draft pick -- to give Smith some serious competition for the starting gig. Bowles saw first-hand with the Cards last season how bad QB play can short-circuit a team's season, and he'd rather not relive the anguish in debut year with the Jets.

Huddle Up: One big game and now it looks like the Jets' owner will force his new coach and GM to build around Geno. That might take a bite out of the potential talent pool, as most coaches/GMs prefer to base their success on a player of their choosing rather than an existing player with a sketchy track record.
Posted: 12/29/2014 9:24am ET
Huddle Up: What do you think the Vegas odds were of Geno posting a perfect passer rating in Week 17? "Astronomical" barely scratches the surface. And yet there were signs of life for the Jets' sophomore quarterback, enough so that Rex Ryan's replacement might just give Smith a spin in 2015.
Posted: 12/2/2014 9:04pm ET
Huddle Up: Smith or any other QB is definitely far from fantasy usable if a team is only going to call 15 passing plays and 49 runs as the Jets did Monday night.
Posted: 11/26/2014 4:05pm ET
Huddle Up: The Jets need to find out if Smith has a long-term future with the franchise, and need him off the bench and in live action to make that determination. It mainly boils down to decision-making and keeping the turnovers to a minimum. If he can do that, it shouldn't affect what limited fantasy values there are for the team's other offensive skill players.
Posted: 10/28/2014 11:53pm ET
Huddle Up: This could be a factor Sunday given Michael Vick's recent injury track record, but see what Smith can do in practice this week.
Posted: 10/27/2014 9:21am ET
Huddle Up: Regardless of whether or not it was a shoulder injury that ultimately landed Smith on the bench Sunday he certainly played his way out of the lineup with multiple first-quarter turnovers. The shoulder issue might be legit, or it could very well be the Jets' way of cushioning the blow as Smith gets benched for Michael Vick.
Posted: 10/6/2014 10:36am ET
Huddle Up: Business as usual for the Jets. Hey, it's not like Mike Vick came in and set the world on fire in relief of Smith during the shutout loss to the Chargers.
Posted: 10/5/2014 9:57pm ET
Huddle Up: The Jets really have nowhere to go. Mike Vick took over in the second half and couldn't move the offense either. The Jets lack of offensive weapons isn't doing its quarterbacks any favors. The offense is a mess and everyone in the organization is to blame.
