Los Angeles Rams impending free-agent WR Sammy Watkins could be given a franchise tag or transition tag this offseason if he and the Rams can't agree on a long-term deal. General manager Les Snead said the Rams have contacted Watkins' agent to discuss contract negotiations.

Huddle Up: Los Angeles had the most improved offense last season. Watkins played his part in that effort after being acquired from the Buffalo Bills, but his numbers didn't jump off the page. If retained, Watkins has WR2 upside but is a more reasonable WR3 draftee.

Los Angeles Rams impending free-agent WR Sammy Watkins may be given the franchise tag or a transition tag this offseason. The franchise tag would cost $16.063 million and a transition tag would cost $13.995 million. The NFL salary cap is expected to be $178.1 million in 2018.

Huddle Up: Watkins' first year with Los Angeles was mostly of the ho-hum variety, but his eight touchdowns saved his fantasy season. That many touchdowns on just 39 receptions is difficult to sustain, though, and Watkins is no more than a WR3 candidate.

  • Posted: 1/10/2018 5:54pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins believes he would 'most definitely' have a greater role in the offense if given another year to work with QB Jared Goff. 'I just think he got on a roll with the guys that he had during OTAs, and once a guy is used to throwing it to someone else, he throws to his guys,' he said. 'It's just part of the game where you need more time, or maybe another year.' Watkins just completed his rookie deal and may be tagged this offseason to remain with the club.

Huddle Up: It remains to be seen if Watkins will stay with the Rams, though it seems like there's a good chance of that happening considering how much the club gave up to acquire him in the first place. While he did manage eight touchdowns, the former Bill also had just 593 receiving yards, but he does have a point that a full offseason with Goff could do some good for both. Watkins would be in the WR3 conversation for 2018 if he continues his career in Los Angeles.

  • Posted: 1/8/2018 10:47pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent, said that it 'would be a pleasure to come back.' He also mentioned that 'it's a business' and that he's 'looking forward to talking to the coach' and seeing where his future is at.

Huddle Up: Watkins was a late addition to the Rams prior to the regular season, with expectations of being the club's No. 1 wide-out, but instead, the former Buffalo Bill ended up finishing fourth on the team in receptions (39) and receiving yards (593). His ceiling is far higher than that, though, and with quarterback Jared Goff in line for a solid third campaign next year, Watkins will have WR3 potential if fully utilized.

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins caught one pass on four targets for 23 yards in a 26-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, Jan. 6.

Huddle Up: Watkins was a touchdown-dependent option all season, so it was no surprise to see him fall flat. The big-play ability is still there, but he will have a hard time making a consistent fantasy impact as the No. 4 option in the passing attack.

  • Posted: 12/24/2017 2:48pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins finished with three grabs for 30 yards and a touchdown on seven targets in the Week 16 game against the Tennessee Titans.

Huddle Up: Watkins hasn't had huge yardage totals lately, but he has visited the end zone in four of his past five games, and six of the past eight. He remains a solid WR4 in all fantasy leagues heading into Week 17.

  • Posted: 12/17/2017 8:57pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins caught two passes for 14 yards in a 42-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 15.

Huddle Up: The lopsided nature of this game no doubt hurt Watkins, but now that Robert Woods is back, Watkins will be a risky, touchdown-dependent option over the final two games.

  • Posted: 12/10/2017 8:55pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins finished with three receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown in the Week 14 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Huddle Up: Watkins has scored in three consecutive games. While he hasn't done much in terms of yardage, he is a solid WR4 in deeper PPR formats since he has three or more grabs in each of the past four outings, too.

  • Posted: 12/3/2017 8:53pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins posted three grabs for 38 yards and a touchdown on four targets in Week 13 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Huddle Up: Watkins has touchdown receptions in four of the past five outings. Despite the frequent scores his catch totals and yardage make him more of a WR4 across more fantasy formats.

  • Posted: 11/26/2017 8:06pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins caught four passes on nine targets for 81 yards and a touchdown in a 26-20 win over the New Orleans Saints in Week 12.

Huddle Up: Watkins has been a touchdown-dependent flex play since joining the Rams, but with Robert Woods nursing a shoulder injury, Watkins took advantage. Until Woods returns, Watkins is a lot easier to trust as a fantasy starter.

  • Posted: 11/19/2017 3:39pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins posted three grabs for 36 yards on four targets in Week 11 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Huddle Up: The three grabs tied his most since Week 3 when he had his best outing of the season with six receptions. Watkins hasn't been much of a factor in Los Angeles, certainly not nearly as quick to fit in as Robert Woods, but he did have two scores in the past two weekends. He remains more of a WR4 or flex option in deeper fantasy leagues at this point. The Rams host the Saints in Week 12.

  • Posted: 11/12/2017 8:10pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins caught two passes for 41 yards and a touchdown in a 33-7 win over the Houston Texans in Week 10.

Huddle Up: Watkins has now scored in back-to-back games, but he remains a touchdown-or-bust option. He simply doesn't have the volume to be trusted as a weekly starter.

  • Posted: 11/5/2017 1:34pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins caught one pass for 67 yards and one touchdown against the New York Giants in Week 9.

Huddle Up: Watkins reached the end zone for the first time in five games but was only targeted two times during the game. He is a risky option for owners because he has at least 60 yards in only two games this season but his big-play potential makes him valuable in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 10/22/2017 5:21pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins posted three catches for 42 yards on five targets in Week 7 against the Arizona Cardinals in London.

Huddle Up: That isn't a lot of production, but it's his second-highest yardage total since Week 1. He no longer warrants fantasy consideration outside of the deepest of leagues heading into Week 9.

  • Posted: 10/20/2017 6:10am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins is likely to be shadowed by Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson in Week 7.

Huddle Up: Watkins has six targets, two catches and 28 yards over the last three games, and he may need to be benched for this matchup. He is an interesting buy-low option on the trade market, though.

  • Posted: 10/10/2017 9:40am ET

Los Angeles Rams WRs Sammy Watkins was held without a reception on four targets in Week 6 and has one catch on six targets for 17 yards over his past two games. Watkins expressed his displeasure on social media by saying, 'Something (has to) be going on,' prompting a discussion with head coach Sean McVay on Monday, Oct. 9.

Huddle Up: For what it's worth, McVay doesn't believe the last two weeks are 'indicative of his production for the rest of the season.' It would not be surprising if Watkins got the squeaky-wheel treatment soon, but it may not be a good idea against one of the most difficult schedules for any receiver going forward. Over the next three games, he will likely see Jalen Ramsey, Patrick Peterson and Janoris Jenkins in primary coverage, meaning he should be on fantasy benches.

  • Posted: 10/5/2017 4:45pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (illness) fully participated in practice Thursday, Oct. 5.

Huddle Up: Watkins was held in check last week but will continue to be a top target for the Rams in the passing game. He will be facing a tough Seattle Seahawks defense in Week 5 but could be a No. 3 receiver or flex option in some leagues.

  • Posted: 10/4/2017 4:57pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (illness) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 4.

Huddle Up: Watkins should recover from the illness before the team's Week 5 game, but owners should keep an eye on the situation. He is coming off a disappointing Week 4 performance but is still one of the top targets in the passing game. He will be facing a tough Seattle Seahawks defense but should still be considered a No. 3 receiver or a flex option for owners.

  • Posted: 10/1/2017 5:29pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins managed just one catch for 17 yards on two targets in Week 4 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Huddle Up: Watkins was terribly disappointing after his 106 yards and two touchdowns last weekend. He'll look to rebound in Week 5, but he faces a tough matchup with the Seattle Seahawks coming to town.

  • Posted: 9/29/2017 2:55pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 29, and is not on the injury report for Week 4.

Huddle Up: Watkins is coming off a terrific Week 3 performance and should continue to be a main target in the team's passing game. He can be considered at least a No. 3 fantasy receiver this week because of the injuries the Dallas Cowboys are dealing with in their secondary.

  • Posted: 9/29/2017 10:49am ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 28, and is expected to officially clear the concussion protocol Friday, Sept. 29.

Huddle Up: Watkins broke out in a big way in Week 3 against the San Francisco 49ers and could have another good day in Week 4 versus the Dallas Cowboys, but his road gets much more difficult after that with games against the Seattle Seahawks, Jacksonville Jaguars, Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants next up. He figures to be a low-end WR2 this week, but could slide down into fringe WR3 territory after that.

  • Posted: 9/28/2017 5:10pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) fully participated in practice Thursday, Sept. 28.

Huddle Up: Watkins appears ready for a full workload this week and will be facing a banged-up Dallas Cowboys secondary this week. He is coming off a terrific Week 3 game where he recorded 106 yards and two touchdowns. Watkins can be a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver for owners.

  • Posted: 9/27/2017 5:53pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 27.

Huddle Up: Owners will need to check later in the week to see if Watkins will be cleared to play in Week 4. He recorded 106 yards and two touchdowns in the last game and should continue to have a big role in the passing game if he plays in Week 4. He could be at least a No. 3 receiver in fantasy leagues if he is active.

  • Posted: 9/22/2017 5:05am ET

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) is in the concussion protocol Friday, Sept. 22.

Huddle Up: Watkins is coming off a 6-106-2 game in Week 3 but has a couple of extra days to recover. He'd be a WR3 option against the Dallas Cowboys if he's fit to go.

  • Posted: 9/21/2017 11:21pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) left the team's Week 3 game against the San Francisco 49ers with about eight minutes remaining after being evaluated on the sidelines for a head injury. Watkins went to the locker room and was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol.

Huddle Up: This isn't the news fantasy owners wanted to hear after Watkins enjoyed his best game of the season by far. The silver lining is that the team doesn't take the field again until Oct. 1, giving Watkins 10 days to recover. If he does, he has WR2 potential against the Cowboys. If he doesn't, Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp become interesting options.

  • Posted: 9/21/2017 8:58pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins finished with six catches on seven targets for 106 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-39 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 3.

Huddle Up: After two lackluster games to start the year, Watkins broke out against San Francisco. Chemistry between Watkins and Jared Goff should only improve as the season goes on, and Watkins has WR2 upside against Dallas in Week 4.

  • Posted: 9/17/2017 9:24pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins posted two catches for just 30 yards on two targets in Week 2 against Washington.

Huddle Up: Watkins has seven grabs for just 88 yards and he hasn't visited the end zone through two games. He is slowly getting up to speed in the team's system after coming over from the Bills late in the preseason. Eventually he'll re-emerge as a top fantasy option, but right now you can expect mediocre results until he gets up to speed.

  • Posted: 9/10/2017 7:42pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins caught all five of his targets for 58 yards in a 46-9 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1.

Huddle Up: Despite joining the Rams about a month ago, Watkins already showed solid chemistry with Jared Goff. A Week 2 meeting with Washington could mean a matchup with Josh Norman, but Watkins still has enough upside to use as a WR3.

  • Posted: 8/14/2017 6:56pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins is expected to play in the preseason game against the Oakland Raiders Saturday, Aug. 14, according to head coach Sean McVay.

Huddle Up: Watkins will need some time to learn the Rams offense, so it is not known how much playing time he will receive Saturday. Watkins probably will be the Rams' top receiver this season and should see plenty of targets. He probably should be considered a low-end No. 2 or a No. 3 receiver in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 8/12/2017 8:53pm ET

Los Angeles Rams WR Sammy Watkins said he can be 'that home-run guy' for the offense.

Huddle Up: Watkins has loads of talent, but staying healthy was already a problem, and the quarterback situation in Los Angeles is far from ideal. He should be considered a high-upside WR3 at this point.

  • Posted: 8/11/2017 2:24pm ET

Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said the team is interested in signing WR Sammy Watkins to a long-term contract since he is entering the last year of his contract. The two sides have not had contract talks at this point.

Huddle Up: Watkins should be the No. 1 receiver for the Rams this season but is still a risky option because of his injury history. He has joined another team that likes to run the ball, but he should receive a solid amount of targets in the passing game. He can be considered a No. 2 receiver in most fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 8/11/2017 10:16am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins was traded along with a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Los Angeles Rams for CB E.J. Gaines and a 2018 second-round selection on Friday, Aug. 11.

Huddle Up: The Bills did not take advantage of their ability to pick up the fifth-year option on Watkins this spring, and it turns out it won't be a problem for them after all. Instead, they will likely move forward with rookie Zay Jones and the newly acquired Jordan Matthews as their starting receivers. Jones should now be considered a quality WR3 option in fantasy, while Matthews will likely settle in as a WR4, at least initially.

  • Posted: 8/10/2017 5:26pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins was targeted on each of Tyrod Taylor's first four pass attempts and finished with four catches for 39 yards in in the team's preseason opener versus the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Huddle Up: Unfortunately, we can Watkins' ADP to skyrocket over the next week. Watkins' ability has never been in question, but his ability to stay on the field has. He has always been capable of being a fantasy WR1, but owners need to remember he has played 21 of 32 games over the last two seasons due to foot injuries. Owners need to understand the risk he comes with before using a third-round selection on him in drafts.

  • Posted: 8/8/2017 6:37am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) will play about a quarter in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 10, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Huddle Up: Watkins turned his ankle over the weekend, but it's just another strand in a string of injuries. He has WR2 potential, but he can't be trusted as more than a WR3 in fantasy.

  • Posted: 8/7/2017 2:13pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 7, and appeared to be a full participant.

Huddle Up: Watkins has dealt with injuries in the past but it appears that the one he suffered this weekend is minor. He has been a productive player when he is healthy and should be the No. 1 receiver for the Bills in 2017. Owners in most leagues can consider him a No. 2 fantasy receiver.

  • Posted: 8/6/2017 1:26pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (ankle) left practice early Sunday, Aug. 6, after he suffered an ankle injury. Watkins said he believes he will be able to return to practice Monday, Aug. 7.

Huddle Up: It looks like Watkins suffered a minor injury, but owners should keep an eye on the situation. He was limited to 430 yards and two touchdowns in 2016 because of injury but will be the team's No. 1 receiver this season. Watkins probably can be considered a No. 2 receiver in most fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 8/2/2017 7:16am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) said his surgically repaired left foot is fully healthy. 'My job is really to get back in shape and be out there with the guys,' Watkins said. 'I don't want to hear no more about the foot. The foot is fine. I'm healed.' He'll be on a fluctuating repetition count during training camp.

Huddle Up: Watkins has WR1 talent, but he has been a walking injury report throughout his career. Give credit to him for playing through it until last season, but this is a prove-it year for him. He's a WR2 with significant risk and reward.

  • Posted: 7/27/2017 6:34pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, July 27, but he didn't look hindered by his surgically-repaired foot during drills, according to Joe Buscaglia of WKBW.com.

Huddle Up: Watkins is a high-risk, high-reward WR2, but if he can stay healthy for an entire season, he could put up WR1 numbers.

  • Posted: 7/27/2017 1:40pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is on schedule in terms of his rehab from his foot injury but will be limited during the early part of training camp, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Huddle Up: Watkins has struggled with injuries over the last year or two but appears to be on track to play in Week 1. He will be the top option in the passing game for the Bills and should see plenty of targets if he is healthy this season. Owners in most leagues should consider Watkins as a No. 2 fantasy receiver.

  • Posted: 7/22/2017 6:21pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is expected to be close to 100 percent healthy when training camp begins.

Huddle Up: Watkins has injury red flags galore, but he has WR1 potential if he can actually stay healthy. When it comes time to draft a WR2, you may want to roll the dice on Watkins and his upside.

  • Posted: 6/25/2017 5:52pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is unlikely to be ready for a full workload when training camp begins.

Huddle Up: His injury history is a major red flag, but Watkins has enough upside to take a chance on as your WR2.

  • Posted: 6/13/2017 11:56am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) participated in team drills at minicamp Tuesday, June 13. Head coach Sean McDermott said Watkins has responded well to a bigger workload and that workload will continue to be increased as long as Watkins can handle it.

Huddle Up: At this rate, it looks like Watkins will be able to make a full recovery in time for the regular season as long as he doesn't suffer any setbacks. He has a reputation for being injury prone, though, after missing 11 games the last two seasons. A Buffalo's No. 1 receiver, Watkins can be drafted as a low-end WR1 to high-end WR2.

  • Posted: 6/13/2017 8:33am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) remains limited in practice Tuesday, June 13. Watkins will likely be relegated to individual drills during mandatory minicamp with the potential to increase his workload in training camp.

Huddle Up: Watkins has battled a myriad of injuries in his brief career, but he has as much talent as risk as a low-end WR2.

  • Posted: 6/8/2017 7:46am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) will be limited in practice Thursday, June 8.

Huddle Up: Watkins has been injury prone throughout his career, but he played really well through them the first couple of years. He's a high-risk WR2 in fantasy.

  • Posted: 5/20/2017 6:36pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is not expected to return to the field until training camp begins.

Huddle Up: Watkins' upside is undeniable, but he is a high-risk WR2 because of his injury history.

  • Posted: 5/18/2017 8:30am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is not participating in the organized team activities Thursday, May 18.

Huddle Up: Watkins has shown equal ability on the field as his propensity for injury. His 60-1,047-9 campaign in 2015 over 13 games had him as a high-end WR2 last year before another foot injury. He'll enter 2017 as a high-risk WR2 that could fall into the WR3 area and handsomely reward you.

  • Posted: 5/5/2017 9:03am ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins is not expected to receive an extension offer during the season, according to the Buffalo News's Vic Carucci, who believes new head coach Sean McDermott's big-picture vision for the roster doesn't include a huge investment in a receiver.

Huddle Up: Watkins has proven to be a dominant force when he can stay on the field but playing 21 of a possible 32 games over the last two seasons isn't helping his cause. Buffalo recently declined his fifth-year team option, so it is beginning to look like they'll be one of the more sought-after free agents in 2018. Almost regardless of where he might land, he should be no worse than a fantasy WR2 this year and beyond.

  • Posted: 5/2/2017 12:25pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins will not have his fifth-year option picked up, according to a source.

Huddle Up: This move, or lack of a move, makes sense for the Bills. Watkins is easily Buffalo's best receiver, but he has begun a track record of not being able to stay on the field after missing 11 total games the last two years. Watkins is a high-risk, high-reward pick and should be drafted as a low-end WR2.

  • Posted: 4/28/2017 6:32pm ET

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins' (foot) fifth-year option likely will not be picked up before the May 2 deadline, according to sources.

Huddle Up: Watkins is recovering from foot surgery and has dealt with injuries over the last few seasons. He should continue to be the Bills' No. 1 receiver in 2017 and can be a No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in fantasy leagues.

  • Posted: 4/15/2017 7:04am ET

The Buffalo Bills have not yet determined if they will pick up the fifth-year option on WR Sammy Watkins' rookie contract but the matter will be discussed internally over the next few weeks, according to a source. He is currently under contract for one more season with a salary cap hit of $6.343 million but if the option is picked up, Watkins would cost the team approximately $13 million against the cap in 2018. A decision will be made by May 2.

Huddle Up: Although it appears likely that the club will pick up Watkins' option, the matter is up for debate because of his recent injury history. He has missed 11 games over the last two seasons and is currently recovering from a second foot surgery. When healthy, Watkins should be viewed as a low-end WR2 or high-end WR3 in most fantasy formats.
