Oakland Raiders WR Martavis Bryant can be a 'dynamic receiver' for quarterback Derek Carr, according to general manager Reggie McKenzie, and McKenzie said Oakland had been working on trading for Bryant for some time.

Huddle Up: Bryant has plenty of upside because of his big-play ability, but he has to stay on the field and show some consistency. He is worth taking a chance on as a WR4.

  • Posted: 1/23/2018 11:17am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) admitted that a back injury suffered in Week 4 did impact his play throughout the course of the season. 'Injuries will never be something I talk about, especially during the season, but since it's after the season, the [back issue] was one of those things that was there,' Carr said. The fourth-year quarterback suffered three transverse process fractures and said he wanted to deal with the injury instead of using it as an excuse.

Huddle Up: Carr's determination and toughness are admirable, but one wonders just how much the injury affected his play. At full health Carr is no more than a fringe QB1, but drafting him as a QB2 is on the safe side.

  • Posted: 1/18/2018 10:20am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr was given high praise from new offensive coordinator Greg Olson. Olson opined that Carr's football intelligence is 'off the charts' and spoke highly of the quarterback's physical talent, accuracy and quick release.

Huddle Up: It's encouraging for an offensive coordinator to speak fondly of his quarterback, but Carr has largely disappointed in fantasy circles, particularly in 2017. There is a good opportunity for a fresh start, though, with a new coaching staff. Oakland still has one of the best offensive lines and receiver duos in football. For now, view Carr as a high-end QB2 with QB1 upside.

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr's personality may not mesh well with Jon Gruden's style if Gruden becomes the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, according to a league source.

Huddle Up: Carr took a step backwards in 2017 and was one of the bigger disappointments in fantasy circles. If Gruden does become the coach, his tough love could bring out the best in Carr. He shouldn't be drafted as a QB1 next year, but Carr could be a nice buy-low candidate as a QB2.

  • Posted: 12/25/2017 9:12pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 15-of-29 passes for 147 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the team's Week 16 defeat Monday, Dec. 25, versus the Philadelphia Eagles. He also added three rushing yards on three carries.

Huddle Up: Yikes, this was arguably Carr's worst performance of the entire season, and it couldn't come at a worse time for owners who were electing to start him in fantasy championship matchups. Even with an upgrade in Oakland's running game this year, Carr took a notable step backwards after two terrific campaigns that led to a lot of people backing him. He certainly won't be a recommended QB1 going into 2018.

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr faces the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14, and the first time these teams met this season, Carr threw for a season-high 417 yards and three touchdowns.

Huddle Up: It has been a disappointing season for Carr overall, but a rematch with Kansas City could be just what the doctor ordered. The Chiefs have allowed the fifth-most passing yards this year, and Carr could be in line for another QB1 performance against his division rival.

  • Posted: 12/3/2017 8:20pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 22 of his 36 pass attempts for 287 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in the Week 13 game against the New York Giants.

Huddle Up: Carr has thrown at least one touchdown in each of his 11 games, but he has one or fewer TD strikes in seven of the past nine outings. His yardage totals have kept him in the mix as a low-end QB1 in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

  • Posted: 11/26/2017 7:03pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 18 of his 24 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-14 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 12.

Huddle Up: You have to go back to Week 7 to find the last game when Carr threw multiple touchdowns and didn't throw an interception. He could be a streaming option in Week 13 against the New York Giants, but make sure to check on the status of Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree before committing to Carr.

  • Posted: 11/6/2017 5:33am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr was 21-for-30 for 300 yards, a touchdown and one interception against the Miami Dolphins Sunday, Nov. 5.

Huddle Up: He's throwing for a ton of yardage, but his 13-to-7 touchdown to interception ratio in eight games leaves much to be desired. He's a midrange QB1 for now.

  • Posted: 10/29/2017 2:48pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 31 of his 49 pass attempts for 313 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Week 8 against the Buffalo Bills.

Huddle Up: Carr did a pretty decent job against a stout Buffalo defense in windy and cool conditions in Buffalo. He should find the weather and matchup more favorable on Monday night in Miami in Week 9.

  • Posted: 10/19/2017 9:11pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 29 of 52 passes for 417 yards and three touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, Oct. 19. Carr added a 15-yard run and did not turn the ball over.

Huddle Up: Completion percentage aside this was easily the biggest game of the year for Carr, who'd passed for fewer than 200 yards in each of his previous three games. We'll see if it jump starts the offense going forward. On the health front Carr now has 10 days to further heal up before the team travels to Buffalo.

  • Posted: 10/17/2017 11:08am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr and the rest of the offense have yet to hit their stride this year. On the season, there have been 42 300-yard passing games, 44 100-yard receiving games and 32 100-yard rushing games by individual players. The Raiders boast zero of those 118 such games.

Huddle Up: The struggles of Amari Cooper have been well documented, but it's somewhat of a surprise that Marshawn Lynch and Michael Crabtree have not reached the 100-yard mark in any game. Carr, Lynch, Crabtree and Cooper remain starting options, of course, but don't expect a big breakout in a tough matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday night.

  • Posted: 10/16/2017 4:13am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 21 of his 30 pass attempts for 171 yards and one touchdown, but he was also picked off twice in Week 6 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Huddle Up: It won't get much better for Carr, at least not yet. Carr has a Week 7 clash against the Kansas City Chiefs and it is a short week because of Thursday Night Football. Add to that Carr is returning from back spasms, and you might want to stay away until Carr gets his legs back.

  • Posted: 10/14/2017 5:41am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) will start Week 6's game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Huddle Up: Carr was removed from the injury report after serving as a full practice participant Friday, Oct. 13. Even though it's uncertain how close he will be to 100 percent, he should be viewed as a low-end QB1 in all fantasy formats due to his career success versus the Chargers.

  • Posted: 10/12/2017 4:31pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) was a limited participant in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 12.

Huddle Up: It looks like Carr will be back under center Sunday for the Raiders, but there's still a question as to how close he is to 100 percent health. Even so, the former Fresno State product has enjoyed splendid numbers opposite the Chargers since entering the league. In fact, he's thrown for more yards and touchdowns against them than any other opponent whom he's faced. Thus, as long as he's active, Carr is worth retaining his QB1 position in all lineups.

  • Posted: 10/11/2017 3:44pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) was able to take part in practice Wednesday, Oct. 11, on a limited basis.

Huddle Up: Head coach Jack Del Rio said earlier in the week that Carr is expected to be ready for Week 6, and that certainly appears to be the case. Originally he was diagnosed with an injury with a 2-6 week timeframe, and it appears he'll be on the short end of that.

  • Posted: 10/9/2017 3:22pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) is expected to play against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 6, according to head coach Jack Del Rio.

Huddle Up: Owners will need to monitor Carr's status during the week to see if he suffers any setbacks. He will be a risky option since he missed only one week because of the injury but can be a low-end No. 1 quarterback in deeper leagues if he is able to play.

  • Posted: 10/6/2017 2:47pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) was limited in practice Friday, Oct. 6, and is questionable for Week 5. He is a game-time decision.

Huddle Up: Consider this far closer to doubtful or out and a case of Jack Del Rio playing games with the injury report. EJ Manuel is expected to start.

  • Posted: 10/6/2017 11:32am ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) has 'improved' and could play as early as Week 6 versus the Los Angeles Chargers.

Huddle Up: Carr's initial timeline was two to six weeks, so this is definitely good news for owners of Michael Crabtree, Amari Cooper and Jared Cook. E.J. Manuel will get the start this week versus the Baltimore Ravens, which is a huge downgrade for the entire offense. Even though the Ravens' defense has fallen off dramatically over the past two weeks, Manuel should put them back on the map in DFS and redraft leagues.

  • Posted: 10/5/2017 11:41pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 5, after taking part in stretching and throwing passes to receivers. Head coach Jack Del Rio previously announced Carr would miss two to six weeks.

Huddle Up: While EJ Manuel is still set to start in Week 5, Carr's return to practice has to be seen as encouraging for his outlook going forward -- both Cam Newton and Tony Romo returned after just one game with the same transverse process fractures. While you'll need a replacement for this weekend, Carr's prospects for Week 6 look brighter.

  • Posted: 10/2/2017 4:24pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) will not be able to play in Week 5 because of his transverse process fracture, but the team is hoping he will only miss one week and return for their Week 6 game. The normal timetable for Carr's injury is two to six weeks.

Huddle Up: Owners will need to check on Carr's practice participation next week to see if he has a chance to play in Week 6. EJ Manuel will be starting in his place but does not have much fantasy value. Owners should be able to find a short-term replacement for Carr on the waiver wire.

  • Posted: 10/2/2017 3:16pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) has a transverse process fracture in his back and likely will miss at least the Week 5 game, according to head coach Jack Del Rio. The typical recovery time for Carr's injury is two to six weeks.

Huddle Up: Owners will need to monitor the situation to see when Carr will be able to return. E.J. Manuel likely will take over as the starting quarterback but should be avoided in all leagues. The quarterback change probably will hurt the fantasy value of Michael Crabtree and Amari Cooper.

  • Posted: 10/1/2017 4:34pm ET

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) is dealing with back spasms, and head coach Jack Del Rio said Sunday, Oct. 1, that he doesn't believe it is a long-term issue.

Huddle Up: That's great news for fantasy owners, as Carr took a knee to the back which forced E.J. Manuel into action. It sounds positive that Carr will be able to play in Week 5 against the Ravens, but we'll have a much better idea next Friday when the official injury report is released.

  • Posted: 10/1/2017 3:17pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr (back) suffered an apparent back injury in the fourth quarter of the Week 4 game against the Denver Broncos.

Huddle Up: Carr was laid flat on the ground after taking a hit in the back, but he was able to walk off under his own power before heading to the locker room. E.J. Manuel replaced him.

  • Posted: 9/24/2017 8:34pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 18 of his 30 pass attempts for just 110 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in the Week 3 game against the Washington Redskins.

Huddle Up: Carr was sacked four times and he turned in a dismal 50.7 quarterback rating, as the Redskins defense seemed to be in the backfield harassing him all evening. He'll look to bounce back in Week 4 on the road against the Broncos in another difficult matchup.

  • Posted: 9/17/2017 7:39pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr completed 23 of his 28 pass attempts for 230 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-20 win over the New York Jets in Week 2.

Huddle Up: Carr is completing 75.0 percent of his passes and has five touchdowns and no interceptions through two games. He is looking the part of a QB1 heading into a Week 3 meeting with Washington.

  • Posted: 9/10/2017 1:53pm ET

Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr went 22-for-32 for 262 yards and two touchdowns against the Tennessee Titans in Week 1.

Huddle Up: Carr continued his strong play from 2016 in Week 1 and has thrown at least two touchdowns in five of his last seven regular season games. Carr should be considered a No. 1 fantasy quarterback next week against the New York Jets.
