Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger, who is now the backup quarterback to QB Marcus Mariota, did not demand a trade and is adamant about going to training camp with a chance to compete against Mariota for the starting job, according to OT Taylor Lewan. Mettenberger took part in the team's voluntary workout program last Friday and Monday, May 4. Mettenberger was 0-6 in his starts last year as a rookie and threw for 1,412 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. Lewan also said Mettenberger lost around 15 pounds this offseason and looks leaner and stronger.

Huddle Up: The second-year QB, a sixth-round pick last season who showed flashes despite his 0-6 record as a starter, is being written off with the Titans using the first-round pick on Mariota and with good reason as the former Oregon standout is going to be given almost every benefit of the doubt at most every turn in the competition for the No. 1 gig. It's certainly not a fair fight, but that's how it goes when it comes to No. 2 overall picks in the draft -- especially at QB.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger was applauded by TE Delanie Walker for recently organizing practice sessions. Walker said he's excited about Mettenberger showing leadership and initiative, adding that Mettenberger could be the franchise quarterback the Titans need.

Huddle Up: We'll find out April 30 if the Titans agree with Walker's assessment, but in the meantime Mettenberger is doing all the right things if he is to take the helm for the Titans in 2015.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger has organized workouts with some of his teammates in Nashville this offseason.

Huddle Up: Mettenberger is taking charge in his second year as he should as the Titans' projected starter, and be certain that there won't be a more interested onlooker as to what the franchise does with the second overall pick on April 30.

According to a story in the Tennessean, Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger is viewed as the steal of the 2014 NFL Draft by head coach Ken Whisenhunt and general manager Ruston Webster, and they view him as a poor man's version of New England Patriots QB Tom Brady.

Huddle Up: Nothing like a little pre-draft chatter. Mettenberger, a 2014 sixth-round pick, was OK with an 83.4 rating and eight TDs and seven interceptions in his rookie season but had a 30.11 QBR and failed to guide the Titans to a win in any of six starts. In short, there aren't many outside of Whisenhunt and Webster who are making Mettenberger-Brady comparisons -- and that's if Whisenhunt and Webster are actually being semi-truthful.

Early indications are the Tennessee Titans are leaning toward giving QB Zach Mettenberger a chance to prove himself as the full-time starter rather than using the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft on Oregon QB Marcus Mariota or Florida State QB Jameis Winston. 'We like Zach, and I think Zach has the tools to play and start in the league,' general manager Ruston Webster said.

Huddle Up: Mettenberger, a 2014 sixth-round pick, averaged 232.5 passing yards and had eight TDs and six interceptions in six starts last last season while going 0-6 and looks as if he showed just enough promise to get another look-see as the starter.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger (shoulder) missed practice for the second straight day Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Huddle Up: The rookie isn't returning on a short week and could be done for the season, leaving Charlie Whitehurst to make his fourth start of the year Thursday against the Jags.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger (shoulder) is out for the year with an AC joint separation, according to a source.

Huddle Up: The Titans will likely go back to Jake Locker at quarterback. He has no fantasy value.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger (shoulder) suffered a sprained right shoulder in the Week 14 game against the New York Giants, and it is more significant than the one he suffered in Week 13. All indications are that he is likely done for the season.

Huddle Up: The Titans will likely turn back to Jake Locker for the final three games of the season. Locker is not on the fantasy radar.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger (shoulder) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 3. Mettenberger said he definitely will play in Week 14.

Huddle Up: The rookie is certainly optimistic, but let's see how the rest of the practice week goes.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger's (shoulder) injury isn't believed to be serious, and the team is hopeful he can play in Week 14 against the New York Giants, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Huddle Up: Sounds like good news for the rookie as he had been doing better than expected prior to his injury. It's likely all going to depend what he can do in practice this week. Stay tuned ...

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger needs to get the ball out of his hand faster and check down quicker, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Huddle Up: The rookie has been OK but certainly not great so far, completing 45-of-73 passes for 495 yards, 3 TDs and 3 picks in a two starts and a cameo relief appearance back in Week 4. He's also been sacked 7 times and a lost a fumble and falls in the large group of Titans offensive players who show flashes of potential but are not worthy of starts in the majority of fantasy leagues on a weekly basis.

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger turned the ball over twice (one interception, one fumble lost) in his first career start in Week 8 against the Houston Texans, but he also threw for 299 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Huddle Up: Mettenberger did OK for his first start and he did try to get the ball down the field more. It will be a learning process but Mettenberger will hopefully provide more big plays for the Titans receivers as the year goes on.

Updating a previous report, the Tennessee Titans plan to start QB Zach Mettenberger in Week 8 against the Houston Texans, a source familiar with the situation said Wednesday, Oct. 22. Indications are Mettenberger was informed of the decision Tuesday, Oct. 21.

Huddle Up: The Titans are looking to the future and will give the rookie Mettenberger a shot to start. He has a strong arm but not much mobility. Jake Locker has been demoted in his contract year and is likely done in Tennessee. Mettenberger's first start is at home but he'll face potential league MVP J.J. Watt and the Texans. Jadeveon Clowney could also return on Sunday, so the Texans defense is an option this week if you need them.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 2:32pm ET

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (thumb) will start at quarterback when he's healthy, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt. QB Charlie Whitehurst has filled in for Locker three times this year, but buzz continues to mount for QB Zach Mettenberger, the team's sixth-round draft pick this year. "We're trying to get him better as we go, knowing with the way it's gone for us at quarterback this year that's something that could happen at any time," Whisenhunt said. Whisenhunt doesn't sound concerned about playing Mettenberger too soon, either.

Huddle Up: Locker should be ready to return this week after missing the last 2 games, but it is Locker so his status is always in doubt. Whitehurst has either failed to throw for 200 yards or a TD in each of his three starts, so fantasy owners of Titans' pass-catchers really have nothing to lose if the team decides to go with the rookie.
