Rich Cimini, of the New York Daily News, reports New York Jets LB Jamaal Westerman may replace LB Vernon Gholston during certain passing situations during the team's Week 1 game.
The Huddle Take: The Jets need to fill Calvin Pace's spot for the first four games, and the hope was that last year's first-round pick would take advantage of the opportunity. However, if Gholston is being replaced in passing situations he'll lose what little IDP upside he had, as his potential for sacks is what makes him intriguing.

M.A. Mehta, of the Newark Star-Ledger, reports New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said LB Vernon Gholston will start at outside linebacker while LB Calvin Pace serves his four-game suspension.
The Huddle Take: Gholston was disappointing as a rookie, but Ryan hopes to work the same magic with him that he did with Terrell Suggs in Baltimore. At minimum, Gholston will have a four-game window to erase the memories of last season before the Jets can start thinking about working Pace back into the lineup.

The Huddle Take: This is just the opportunity that the rookie Vernon Gholston could have hoped for to open the door for him to get some consistent playing time. The highly regarded rookie was drafted by the Jets to solidify its defense for the future for a team looking to return to respectabilty in the strong AFC Eastern division. Consider Gholston an early sleeper for the rookie defensive player of the year award if he proves to be the force on the field he was drafted to be.
