Christopher L. Gasper, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee Week 1, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the injury. One source said Mayo was expected to be out six to eight weeks with the Grade 3 MCL sprain, but the other source said the timetable is "not that bad" and Mayo is expected to be back sooner.
The Huddle Take: Shocking that conflicting injury information is coming out of the Patriots' locker room. Here's what we know: Mayo is hurt, it's probably his knee, and he may practice today or require amputation. If the six-to-eight week timetable is accurate, it throws a real crimp in New England's plans; you saw how the Bills screened them ad nauseum in the opener. Even a month would be a blow, both to the Pats and to anyone banking on Mayo as a breakout IDP player this season.

The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo said he believes he has the ability to play better this season despite winning the Defensive Rookie of the Year last season. 'To be honest, I feel like I can get so much better,' Mayo said. 'Last year I felt like the season I had was ok, but I felt like I could have made so many more plays, big plays especially. I've just been watching the games from last year and [working] in the weight room, just trying to get better and learn from these vets.'
The Huddle Take: Whats not to like about the defensive rookie of the year in 2009. He burst onto the scene like and established himself as a budding star capable of building this defensive unit around for the future. If you are looking for a solid playmaker for IDP fantasy leagues then look no farther than Mayo as he is poised for appears to be another stellar NFL season.

The Associated Press reports New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo has been named The AP 2008 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. He earned 49 of 50 votes after leading the Patriots with 137 tackles.
The Huddle Take: The Patriots needed to get younger at linebacker this year and they did so in style by landing Mayo. Expect him to be the foundation of Bill Belichick's defense for years to come... or at least until his rookie contract expires and teams start backing up the Brinks truck to his front door.
