Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith may have fallen to third on the team's depth chart if the team's rotation during Week 3 is any indication. Smith did not have a carry during the game and had very limited snaps against the Tennessee Titans.
Huddle Up: Last week the Lions coaching staff seemed to indicate that Mikel Leshoure would be in line for a lot of work upon his return, and it wasn't just coach-speak. Smith appears to have truly been a stop-gap in the Lions plans, and barring an injury or another suspension to Leshoure, Smith isn't likely to be fantasy relevant going forward.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith (ankle) did not practice Monday, Aug.
27, due to an ankle sprain suffered in the preseason game Saturday,
Aug. 25.
Huddle Up: Smith was forced to leave Saturday's game early but is expected to
be good to go for Week 1 of the regular season a week from Sunday.
Even though second-year back Mikel Leshoure saw his first NFL action
Saturday after missing all of 2011 with a ruptured Achillies', he is
suspended for the first two games of the season, meaning the Lions
have all their chips in on Smith with Jahvid Best opening the season
on the PUP list.

Updating a previous report, Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith suffered an
ankle injury in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 25, and is
questionable to return.
Huddle Up: On the same night that QB Matthew Stafford suffers a hand injury,
the Lions' No. 1 RB goes down with an ankle ailment. That's not the
definition of a productive preseason game. This could be especially
bothersome for Smith, who injured an ankle shortly after his return
to the NFL last season, and wasn't the same the rest of the season.

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has been happy with RB Kevin Smith during training camp. "He's a very consistent player. He's very good mentally," Schwartz said. He went on to note Smith knows the team's offense inside and out and has done a nice job of picking up a few special teams. "Kevin has had not just a good training camp, but a good offseason program for us," Schwartz noted.
Huddle Up: With Jahvid Best yet to be cleared for contact and Mikel Leshoure facing an early-season suspension Smith is at minimum a sneaky late-round fantasy play; given the current state of the Detroit backfield, he could wind up with the feature gig for the bulk of the season.

Detroit Lions RB Kevin Smith worked with the first-team offense in practice Friday, July 27. With RB Jahvid Best (concussion) on the PUP list and RB Mikel Leshoure facing a two-game suspension, Smith might very well serve as the team's Week 1 starter.
Huddle Up: Smith is healthy and reportedly looked strong and quick. And so did Leshoure, coming off the torn Achilles' last year. So let's suppose Best is cleared for contact in a couple weeks: The scenario we fantasy owners dread is a three-headed monster at RB. Great for Detroit, toxic for us.
