The Buffalo Bills could consider using their franchise tag on impending free-agent PK Dan Carpenter.

Huddle Up: Because really, the Bills are just a kicker away from... oh, wait. Never mind.

Posted: 9/4/2013 2:22pm et

Buffalo Bills PK Dustin Hopkins (groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 4, and will not play Week 1. PK Dan Carpenter will handle all of the kicking duties.

Huddle Up: This is strictly for anyone who happens to have Dustin Hopkins. Dump him and grab another kicker for this week.

Posted: 9/2/2013 8:47pm et

Updating a previous report, the Buffalo Bills signed PK Dan Carpenter (Jets) Monday, Sept. 2. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Huddle Up: Carpenter has hooked on with his fourth team in less than a month shortly after rookie 6th-round PK Dustin Hopkins injured his groin in practice Monday. Carpenter already has been released by the Dolphins, Cardinals and Jets but looks like he'll have a Week 1 gig.

The New York Jets have released PK Dan Carpenter.

Huddle Up: Nick Folk remains the Jets' kicker after Carpenter was released by his third NFL team this preseason.

Posted: 8/25/2013 5:07pm et

The Arizona Cardinals released PK Dan Carpenter on Sunday, Aug. 25.

Huddle Up: Incumbent Jay Feely will hang on to his job after surviving the late-camp challenge from Carpenter, who was signed just this past week after losing his own PK job in Miami.

Posted: 7/6/2013 11:08am et

Miami Dolphins PK Caleb Sturgis is expected to have a big edge over PK Dan Carpenter for the kicker job during training camp because he is scheduled to make a lot less money than Carpenter this season. Carpenter is scheduled to make $2.68 million in 2013 while Sturgis is scheduled to make $405,000.

Huddle Up: Economics suggest that if Sturgis is remotely competent during training camp he'll claim the job. Carpenter is a decent enough kicker to latch on elsewhere, and Sturgis has some upside, but ideally this is a situation for fantasy owners to avoid until it's more clear who will be kicking for the Dolphins.

Posted: 6/21/2013 10:18am et

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said the kicker competition between PK Caleb Sturgis and Dan Carpenter will be determined by whichever one is more consistent. Philbin said coaches tracked every kick and kickoff both tried during offseason workouts. Sturgis appears to have the edge entering training camp.

Huddle Up: Carpenter dipped from an 89-percent success rate in 2011 to 82 percent this past season, opening the door for the Fins to draft Sturgis in the 5th round. If it's close, look for Miami to go with the younger and (more importantly) cheaper rookie.

Posted: 6/12/2013 1:08pm et

Miami Dolphins fifth-round pick PK Caleb Sturgis has a live, accurate leg and could emerge as the starter over more expensive PK Dan Carpenter.

Huddle Up: With the Dolphins hoping for a more explosive offense this season the Miami kicker might have a little fantasy value. Compare the Sturgis situation to Blair Walsh with the Vikings last year, and keep an eye on Sturgis heading into the season.

Posted: 5/16/2013 8:05am et

The Miami Dolphins could consider the salaries of PKs Dan Carpenter and Caleb Sturgis in their competition for the kicking job. Sturgis is scheduled to make one-fifth the salary Carpenter will make in 2013.

Huddle Up: It's a kicker, so if the performance level is close to similar expect Miami to save a few bucks and go with Sturgis.
