Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford is owed the remaining $17.5 million of his $27.5 million signing bonus Friday, March 1.

Huddle Up: Stafford this past season topped 4,500 passing yards (4,650) and increased his TD throws from 20 to 29, but did have a career-high 23 turnovers (19 interceptions, 4 fumbles) in the Lions' second- straight sub-.500 campaign (7-9). Those latter two numbers are going to need to change if Stafford expects to keep cashing the big-$$$ checks.

Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said QB Matthew Stafford needs to improve but also does not believe all of the interceptions Stafford threw are his fault. 'There are interceptions that happen because a receiver breaks his route off too early, or goes through a receivers hands or gets tipped at the line of scrimmage. So, I was a little encouraged after watching that. This was not an interception machine,' Lombardi said.

Huddle Up: Stafford's 19 picks were his most since tossing 20 in his rookie season of 2009 and combined with his 4 fumbles lost gave him a career-high 23 turnovers. Juxtaposed with his 29 TD passes, Stafford's TD-to-turnover ratio is far from ideal and certainly needs some work.

New Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi is excited to work with QB Matthew Stafford, and Lombardi insists that Stafford 'isn't broken.' 'The good news is that he's not broken, that much is clear' Lombardi said. 'There's an awful amount of talent there. His arm is something to behold. We used to sit in the Saints quarterback room and just marvel at his passes -- all the depths, the whole field in play. He really can sling it. That's a great thing to have.'

Huddle Up: Every OC in the NFL would love to work with a quarterback as talented as Stafford. It's a nice place to start when building an offense.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford finished 18-of-34 for 235 yards, 1 TD and 3 interceptions Monday. Dec. 16 in an 18-16 loss to the visiting Baltimore Ravens.

Huddle Up: Stafford's fantasy owners needing a big night from the QB saw him total fewer than 250 passing yards for the 4th time this season and negate his only TD with the 3 picks. He now has 21 turnovers on the season, with only the N.Y. QBs -- Eli Manning (27) and Geno Smith (25) -- having more.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford has sped up his release on his throws this season. He has been sacked nine times in 252 dropbacks, which equates to the second-lowest percentage in the league.

Huddle Up: Stafford's improved throwing motion has helped him regain a spot among fantasy's top QBs as he currently ranks 4th overall with 144 points (Huddle Performance scoring).

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford wants to throw the ball less than the 727 times he threw the ball in 2012. The hope is the team will be able to run the ball more in the late in the game and not be forced to throw because they are behind. 'A lot of the time, we were throwing the ball because of circumstance; we were behind in games late in the game and it's tough to justify handing the ball off a lot and trying to get back into it," Stafford said. 'That was kind of a thing of circumstance but at the same time we have to find a way to be more explosive in the run game and a little bit more balanced as well.'

Huddle Up: With 1,390 pass attempts over the past 2 seasons -- 63 more than any other NFL QB -- Stafford has racked up fantasy points aplenty for himself and wideout Calvin Johnson, but that isn't necessarily the best recipe for the team's bottom (W-L) line. The Lions haven't had a fantasy RB worth starting in years, but Reggie Bush figures to change that this fall, providing the squad with a little more of that needed balance.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's recent three-year contract extension will raise the average annual value of his deal to approximately $15.3 million. Entering 2013, only five of the league's other 31 starting quarterbacks have a contract that pays them more annually, according to info compiled by The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett.

Huddle Up: Does that translate into Stafford being the 6th-best fantasy QB available in 2013 drafts? Not quite, but don't discount Stafford's 10,005 combined passing yards over the past 2 seasons -- ranking 3rd among all QBs -- and the strong probability that his disappointing 2012 TD total of 20 is almost certain to take a jump after he tossed 41 only a year earlier.

Detroit Lions QB Matthew Stafford's new contract extension has $53 million worth of new money included in the new deal, including a reported $41.5 million in guaranteed money, according to ESPN.com. Stafford will be under contract with the Lions through the 2017 season.

Huddle Up: With 2 years remaining on Stafford's 6-year, $78 million rookie contract, the Lions locked up the QB for 3 additional seasons and securing the throwing half of arguably the league's top pitch-and-catch duos.

Posted: 7/9/2013 2:57pm et

Updating a previous report, the Detroit Lions are expected to sign QB Matthew Stafford to a 5-year contract extension that will pay somewhere around $75 million as soon as Tuesday, July, 9.

Huddle Up: Locking up the top QBs has been the theme all offseason, and it looks like the first-overall pick of the 2009 draft is next in line for the big $$$. Stafford was plagued by injury issues his first 2 seasons, missing a combined 19 games, but he's been healthy over the past 2 years, topping 4,900 passing yards each season.

Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand said the team is still talking with QB Matthew Stafford about a contract extension, but the team will have to turn its focus on the season if a deal can be done by a certain point. 'We've still got some discussion to have, but at some point in time we'll either get a deal done or we'll focus on football,' Lewand said. 'It's a different dynamic when you have two years left on a contract versus one. Most of them get done with a year left. And we've worked through a lot of those issues and continue to do that, want to continue the dialogue. But at some point in time we'll either have a deal or we'll agree that the focus needs to be on what's going on on the field.'

Huddle Up: Stafford, who's been a top-10 fantasy QB in each of the past 2 seasons, and his agent are trying to strike when the NFL QB market is hot (i.e. the recent deals for Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers and Tony Romo), but it's definitely not a pressing matter at this point.
