San Diego Chargers LB Larry English said he hopes to earn the starting outside linebacker job that LB Melvin Ingram (knee) held before his season-ending injury in OTAs. 'I'm just concentrating on being able to provide what the team needs. [Head coach Mike McCoy] emphasized to all of us that now is the time for someone to step up and provide what we'll miss from Melvin, and I have that opportunity now to be the guy the team needs,' English said.
Huddle Up: Curb that enthusiasm as English's 4-year pro career has produced only 4 starts, 64 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and no interceptions -- not good numbers for the 16th overall pick in 2009.

San Diego Chargers OLB Larry English (hamstring) practiced for a second consecutive day Monday, Aug. 6.
Huddle Up: It's a vital season for English, the 2009 first-round draft pick who only has played in 13 games over the past two seasons due to an assortment of injuries. Last year, his production was limited to 7 total tackles and 2 sacks in 5 games before landing on IR with a broken foot. Partially as a result, the Chargers are moving forward at the position, drafting South Carolina's Melvin Ingram in the first round and signing free-agent Jarret Johnson. At the very least, English will need to stay on the field to make the final roster.
