Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (shoulder) has no structural damage to his shoulder, but he is dealing with a significant bruise suffered in the Week 16 game against the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Mike Pettine said Monday, Dec. 22, that Hoyer is 'very sore.'

Huddle Up: See how Hoyer progresses throughout the week, and if he can't go, rookie Connor Shaw will get the call against the Ravens, dropping the fantasy values of the Browns' surrounding offensive cast and raising the stock of the Baltimore D.

  • Posted: 12/9/2014 11:41pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer is unlikely to return to the team next year after being benched for QB Johnny Manziel heading into Week 15. Hoyer is expected to become a free agent.

Huddle Up: There should be some interest in Hoyer, but his NFL future is probably serving as a backup.

  • Posted: 12/3/2014 3:52pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will start in Week 14 over Johnny Manziel. According to a source, though, Manziel could start the team's final three games if the team were to lose in Week 14 with Hoyer as the starter. Manziel was 5-for-8 for 63 yards and a 10-yard touchdown scamper when he relieved Hoyer in Week 13. Hoyer has one touchdown and six interceptions in his last 15 quarters.

Huddle Up: Johnny Football fans will have to wait as Hoyer gets the call Sunday against the Colts. No pressure, Brian.

  • Posted: 12/1/2014 2:37pm ET

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer are in the dark as to who will start against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14, but head coach Mike Pettine said the team will make a decision on this weekend's starter Wednesday, Dec. 3. 'The door is definitely open for a change at the quarterback position,' Pettine said. 'It's not like we're just going to go back to Brian (Hoyer). This has been a cumulative thing where discussions about a change at quarterback have been more and more lively. We'll evaluate both quarterbacks and have a decision soon.'

Huddle Up: The smart money is on Manziel getting the nod. With the rushing numbers he'll provide, Manziel is worth picking up this week in two quarterback leagues or if you're starter has been shaky this year.

  • Posted: 11/25/2014 6:55pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer was never in danger of being benched in favor of QB Johnny Manziel in the team's Week 12 win over the Atlanta Falcons, according to head coach Mike Pettine. Hoyer threw three interceptions in the game. Pettine praised Hoyer for shaking off his mistakes and leading the team to a game-winning drive.

Huddle Up: Hoyer is the first Cleveland QB to post back-to-back 300-yard games in 31 years, but he needs to work in a few more TD tosses -- he has 1 in his last 3 games -- and cut down on turnovers to become a better fantasy bet.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 2:40pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel could see some action in Week 8 against the Oakland Raiders, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Pettine said Monday, Oct. 20, that QB Brian Hoyer is still firmly entrenched as the team's starting quarterback. Hoyer completed a career-low 39 percent of his attempts against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 7 and threw for 215 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He has completed only 41.3 percent of his passes in the last two weeks. Pettine blamed Hoyer's poor performance on the team's inability to run and set up play-action.

Huddle Up: Hoyer owners have known this is coming sooner or later, and the QB's poor performance last Sunday against previously winless Jacksonville looks to have jump-started the process. Hoyer, though, still has a chance to stave off the rookie with a strong bounce-back showing against the Raiders this week.

  • Posted: 10/21/2014 12:47am ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer completed only 39 percent of his passes in the team's Week 7 game, which is the worst completion percentage by any quarterback this season. The Browns, however, said Hoyer remains the starting QB.

Huddle Up: While Hoyer has certainly bought himself some time with the 3-2 start, he had best take advantage of favorable matchups against the Raiders and Bucs the next two weeks, or we might see Johnny Football starting in November.

  • Posted: 9/3/2014 5:44pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer won't receive a quick hook in the team's Week 1 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of QB Johnny Manziel, according to head coach Mike Pettine. However, Hoyer understands that he'll need to produce to hold off a quarterback change during the year.

Huddle Up: The Browns have 3 games before their Week 4 bye, so that might be the length of Hoyer's initial trial run.

  • Posted: 8/20/2014 10:22am ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer has been named the starting quarterback over QB Johnny Manziel. Head coach Mike Pettine wrote the announcement in an e-mail and said Manziel made great strides, but Hoyer had a decided edge.

Huddle Up: No surprise here, as Hoyer had the lead going into the training camp competition and neither quarterback stood out. Manziel will likely get his opportunity during the season after Hoyer struggles--which is bound to happen given the Browns' decided lack of offensive firepower. Now if Manziel can coordinate his ascension to the starting gig with Josh Gordon's potential mid-season return from suspension...

  • Posted: 8/14/2014 7:29pm ET

Cleveland Browns QBs Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel will reportedly split first-team repetitions Monday, Aug. 18, against the Washington Redskins. Hoyer will start the game, but Manziel will alternate every two series with the first-team offense.

Huddle Up: Alternating QBs rarely produces positive results, but at least it's not every other series. Either way, the much talked-about derby hits the stretch run on Monday Night Football as the Browns have said they'd like to name a starter before the third week of the preseason.

  • Posted: 8/6/2014 1:50pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback for the first preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine.

Huddle Up: No shocker here as Hoyer has been running with the 1s since OTAs, but definitely expect Johnny Manziel to get equal opportunity over the coming few weeks in the league's most-discussed QB battle.

  • Posted: 8/4/2014 2:36pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel worked with the first-team offense during practice Monday, Aug. 4. Head coach Mike Pettine said Manziel and QB Brian Hoyer will see time with the starters during practice this week.

Huddle Up: This was planned but it's further proof that the battle between Manziel and Hoyer is tight. The winner of the Browns' QB derby won't be decided until after the third preseason game at the earliest. If Manziel plays well in games, it will be hard to keep him off the field.

  • Posted: 8/2/2014 11:35am ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will take all of the team's first-team snaps in practice Saturday, Aug. 2. QB Johnny Manziel will continue to work with the second team.

Huddle Up: Hoyer is ahead of Manziel for now but this will be an ongoing battle throughout the preseason. The Browns starting quarterback competition between Hoyer and Manziel will be one of the most hotly debated position battles throughout the summer. Of course, you probably know that if you own a TV.

  • Posted: 7/31/2014 11:59pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer and QB Johnny Manziel remain in a close battle for the starting quarterback job, according to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan said the competition has been 'back and forth' and that he doesn't 'think one is in front of the other.'

Huddle Up: May be a little diplomacy on Shanny Jr.'s part as most reports out of Browns camp have had Hoyer with a solid lead. Shanahan did add, though, that Manziel will be spending some time working with the first-team offense to even up the competition. We'd say to stay tuned to this situation, but you really have no choice if you follow the NFL at any level.

  • Posted: 7/29/2014 2:00pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) is outperforming rookie QB Johnny Manziel so far in camp, and the starting quarterback job has been Hoyer's job to lose, as observed by Jason La Canfora. Hoyer looks crisper with his mental speed, including actions in the huddle, at the line and during plays. Hoyer is not gun-shy as his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament continues 'to wow the Browns,' according to La Canfora. Manziel also has acted somewhat guarded around his new teammates.

Huddle Up: Hoyer is certainly the man if you need to draft a viable starting QB for right now, but Johnny Football still remains the best option for those fantasy GMs looking farther down the line.

  • Posted: 7/22/2014 1:12pm ET

Cleveland Browns QBs Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer will know who is starting before the third preseason game, according to head coach Mike Pettine, though it could happen sooner. Pettine has expressed hesitation to name Manziel the starter immediately and thinks Hoyer's chances are underrated.

Huddle Up: The sooner the better for fantasy GMs, although many of whom are already banking on Manziel getting the bulk of the starts even if he doesn't win the job outright in the preseason.

  • Posted: 7/13/2014 10:39pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) said he knows that he will be pushed by QB Johnny Manziel for the starting quarterback job but is looking forward to competing during training camp.

Huddle Up: Of all the QBs currently sitting No. 1 on an NFL depth chart, none is under the gun like Hoyer, who's going to have to immediately pick up where he left off left season -- and then some -- to hold off the wildly popular rookie and keep ravenously hungry Browns fans at bay.

  • Posted: 6/11/2014 11:51pm ET

ESPN analyst Ron Jaworski said it is his opinion that Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer will be the starting quarterback Week 1 because he is far ahead of QB Johnny Manziel in terms of understanding the offense.

Huddle Up: Plenty of time for Johnny Football to learn the offense and win the job, but there's also no reason to rush him in Cleveland--other than to help The Mothership fill their daily quota of Manziel stories.

  • Posted: 5/9/2014 12:22pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) was informed by Browns general manager Ray Farmer via text message during the NFL Draft that the team would be selecting Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel, to which Hoyer responded by saying 'bring him on.' Browns head coach Mike Pettine said he expected such a response from a competitor like Hoyer.

Huddle Up: It would be a mild upset if Johnny Football isn't the Week 1 starter in Cleveland, but Hoyer showed enough prior to his injury last season to at least warrant the opportunity to compete.

  • Posted: 4/29/2014 11:23pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) was limited in practice Tuesday, April 29. Hoyer did not participate in team drills but was assertive on the field. Hoyer said he believes he is the starter. 'Until someone tells me otherwise,' he said. 'I feel like I'm the starter for this team.'

Huddle Up: Hoyer appears to have the backing of new Browns coach Mike Pettine, who has said he would like to avoid starting a rookie QB out of the gate, but they'll be plenty of pressure if the Browns select a QB in the first round, particularly at No. 4 overall.

  • Posted: 3/23/2014 4:00pm ET

Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer (knee) expects to take part in the team's organized team activities (OTAs) in May.

Huddle Up: It's obviously early, but Hoyer looks to be the early favorite to open the season as the Browns' starter with the team also expected to spend a high draft pick on a rookie.

  • Posted: 2/9/2014 4:52pm ET

Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said he liked QB Brian Hoyer coming out of college and believes he has a chance to become a successful quarterback in the NFL.

Huddle Up: Expect at least 2 things this coming offseason with the Browns' QB situation: A newcomer (likely via the draft) will be brought in as the team's projected franchise QB and Hoyer will be kept around to bridge the transition and serve as a valuable backup.

  • Posted: 1/26/2014 11:46pm ET

The Cleveland Browns are expected to pay QB Brian Hoyer the $250,000 roster bonus he is scheduled to receive in March.

Huddle Up: Hoyer's breakout season was cut short by injury, and he'll be in the mix to start 2014 with whatever QB the Browns' draft in May.
