Background:   Jones spent the first three years of his prep career at Van Buren (AR) High School, splitting time as a junior between quarterback and receiver, gaining 520 yards and five touchdowns on 22 receptions while also becoming a finalist for McDonald’s All America Honors in basketball, breaking former Arkansas All America basketball player Corliss Williamson’s conference record for single season scoring average (24.5 points per game avg.).  Jones then transferred to Northside (Fort Smith, AR) High School for his senior year, earning All-Arkansas honors as a quarterback, completing 62 of 137 passes for 830 yards and seven touchdowns and 939 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns on 105 rushing attempts while ranking in the top five statewide in punt returns.

The 6-6, 242 pound athlete was a four year letterman in football at the University of Arkansas while moonlighting for two seasons on the Razorbacks basketball team.  Jones set school season and career rushing records for a quarterback in 2003 with 633 yards and eight touchdowns on 89 carries (7.1 avg.) while passing for 1,917 yards, 18 touchdowns and only seven interceptions becoming an All-American selection as an all-purpose back by the NFL Draft Report and All-SEC second team as a quarterback by the league’s coaches.  Jones was a career total yardage Hog, racking up 8,392 yards (smashing Clint Stoerner’s previous record of 7,049) while accumulating 77 touchdowns, bumping Stoerner again, from the top of the school’s all-time touchdown list.

Lost in the many records and padded statistics was the clutch leadership intangible that Jones displayed time and time again, rescuing the razorbacks countless times in big games, including coming off the bench in the fourth quarter to amass 171 yards of total offense in the seven overtime thriller over Ole Miss in 2001 and what’s considered in Arkansas country the most memorable Matt moment, the surreal comeback against LSU, after trailing 17-7 with 5:34 left in the third quarter, that ended with Jones finding DeCori Birmingham between a two defender sandwich for a 31 yard scoring strike with nine seconds left, giving Arkansas an improbable 21-20 win over LSU and the opportunity for the Razorbacks to play in the 2002 Southeastern Conference championship game.

After pre-draft workout numbers of 4.37 in the forty yard dash, vertical leap of 39.5 inches and a broad jump of 10’9”, Jones created a buzz amongst NFL scouts with his rare blend of size and speed and inspired the Jaguars to select him 21st overall in 2005, despite not having a clear cut position.

Even though Jones started the 2005 season as the third receiver in an lethargic Jaguars passing attack, he flashed his big play ability with all five of his receiving touchdowns going 20 yards or more with 432 receiving yards on 36 catches and he added 51 yards rushing on 12 carries and completed two of three passing attempts for 12 yards.

What’s new for 2006:   Jack Del Rio has maintained that he is not looking for free agent help with his receiving corps and he believes players like Jones, Reggie Williams and Ernest Wilford will continue to improve as Jimmy Smith has ended his long and productive career.  The former Razorback has the most upside out of Jacksonville’s young pass-catchers and offensive coordinator Carl Smith will continue to explore ways to get Jones as many in-game touches as possible. That being said, the second year receiver probably remains a year or two away from being a week-to-week scoring threat, but seven touchdowns and 7-800 receiving yards isn’t out of the question for this season.

ESPNChicago.com reports unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) said during a radio interview that his agent has spoken with the New York Jets, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears and Dallas Cowboys. He believes he will sign with a team sooner rather than later.
Huddle Up: The Titans are hurting for receivers more than the Bears or Cowboys, so that's probably the team where Jones will land.

The Florida Times-Union, reports free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) has spent more than $15,000 to train in seclusion with a team of specialists while at IMG Academies. Jones agent, Dave Butz, said he has spoken with several teams about possible interest in Jones, but nothing appears imminent. Butz said, "We've had dialogue with multiple teams. I think [his prospects for catching on with a new team] are excellent. We're excited now to find the best fit for Matt. He's scot-free as far as punishment and ready to have a great year."
Huddle Up: When Jones has been on the field he has been a solid contributor for the passing game prior to his release from the Jaguars. Look for the veteran receiver to find another team in the near future as he looks to be ready to play and could pose as a nice No. 2 wideout for an NFL team in 2009. Fantasy owners should watch Jones the next few weeks to see if he lands in the right situation which could make him at least fantasy relevent once again.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars) is free to resume his NFL career now that his graduation from Washington County Drug Court has wiped away a felony drug charge. Circuit Court Judge Mary Ann Gunn warned Jones Monday, July 6, that since he has completed the program, drug court is no longer an option if he is arrested again. Jones will remain in the league's substance abuse program until 2010.
Huddle Up: Jones had his best season as a pro in 2008, with 761 yards receiving and two touchdowns. But a team would have to be pretty hard up at the wide receiver position to take a chance on a guy who is one mistake away from, at the very least, being suspended for a year. On top of that is the probability of some significant jail time as well should he slip up. One team that could conceivably be interested, however, would be the Cowboys, since Jerry Jones loves those Arkansas Razorbacks and that's where Matt Jones went to school.

05/26/09
ESPN.com reports Dave Butz, agent for unrestricted free-agent WR Matt Jones (Jaguars), said the NFL told Jones he would be fined but not suspended as a result of his violation of a court-mandated drug program. Jones violated the drug program when he drank alcohol during an outing. Jones has been fined $50,000 but is appealing the fine.
Huddle Up: With Jones currently a free-agent and looking for a new NFL team this is the best news that he could have gotten. Look for Jones to land with a new team soon as he could help to solidify a receiving unit looking to add another solid receiving option to its roster. Jones is a high-risk wideout but could surprise if he lands in the right situation this year. Consider him a decent No. 3 receiver with limited upside at the present time.

The Associated Press reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Matt Jones was released from jail a day early Saturday, March 14. Jones was ordered to stay in jail until Sunday, March 15, after he violated his probation by drinking beer. Jones had asked to be locked up rather than spending six weeks in a treatment facility.
Huddle Up: No ruling yet on whether or not Jones' slip-up will cost him additional time courtesy of discipline meted out by Roger Goodell. But at least part of the reason he opted for the jail time as opposed to the rehab was a suggestion from the judge that six weeks at Trembling Hills might put a larger dent in his football future than a weekend in lockup.

03/16/09
ESPN.com reports the Jacksonville Jaguars have released WR Matt Jones, a league source told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
Huddle Up: Looks like the Jags are giving up on their troubled former first-round selection. This being the NFL, he'll find a second chance somewhere. And it puts a real emphasis on Jacksonville's need for a wide receiver or two in the upcoming draft.
