2007 Outlook
The first year in Scott Linehan’s offense and Bulger’s level of play did change from his old Martz-days. He got better. In fact, he had career highs in completions (370), yards (4301) and touchdowns (24). Bulger ranked #2 in completions last year, #3 in passing yardage and #4 in passing touchdowns. All this and only eight interceptions. Yes, the change did not hurt him at all.
While Bulger had a few uncharacteristic clunkers in 2006 (142 yards in CAR and 137 yards in OAK without any scores), he still posted eight games over 300 yards – half the time he played. He also had seven efforts with two or more touchdown passes. What has made Bulger even better is using Steven Jackson as a receiver and finally having a dominating rushing game that must be respected. The Rams have also acquired Drew Bennett to replace the departed Kevin Curtis so there should be no reason for Bulger to have a lack of targets this season. Even Randy McMichael comes over to shore up the tight end spot. Not only does he have all this going for him, he also has the softest passing schedule in the league this year. Consider Bulger a very safe and productive pick at quarterback this season.
Recent Priority News
08/18/08
Marc Bulger, STL - Strained Shoulder - Rams' QB Marc Bulger has been diagnosed with a minor shoulder strain but head coach Scott Linehan said that the injury isn't serious and that it won't affect his status for the start of the regular season. Bulger apparently hurt his shoulder at some point during Saturday's preseason game but he said it didn't bother him until the next morning. Linehan told reporters that an MRI was not performed but the medical staff tested his shoulder strength and it was OK. He went on to say that Bulger might be limited in practice today as a precaution, but that he expected him to "be just fine."
12/14/07
Bulger practiced today for the second consecutive day
with no apparent difficulty, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
reports.
"Marc threw well and looked good," head coach Scott
Linehan told the paper. "Things look real positive for
Sunday."
Huddle Up: Yeah, whatever. We heard the same thing last week,
then Bulger starting feeling bad in a Friday team
meeting and Linehan ruled him out for the Cincinnati
game. At least today we should have some definitive
news, because Linehan will reportedly name his starter
for this week after practice. It'll either be Bulger or Gus
Frerotte, who's shoulder injury has improved
significantly.
12/11/07
Bulger told head coach Scott Linehan that he feels
better and will try to practice on Wednesday. He
unexpectedly missed the Bengal game after suffering a
setback in his recovery from a concussion.
Huddle Up: Take this with a grain of salt, to put it mildly. Bulger was
looking good last week until Friday, when he started
feeling bad in a team meeting. It was then that Linehan
declared Bulger out for the Cincinnati game. If he can
play, he's a decent start at home against the Packers.
But don't assume anything. It's likely we won't have any
definitive word on Bulger's availability until Saturday or
possibly game time.
12/08/07
St Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Rams QB Marc Bulger has suffered a setback this week and is now listed as out for the game against Cincinnati. Bulger practiced Wednesday and Thursday but did not feel well after the practice Thursday. "Marc had really what I thought were two very good practices Wednesday and Thursday, but that’s the objective part," coach Linehan said. "I guess the subjective part is he didn’t feel really good after (Thursday) afternoon’s meetings. "Because of that, it puts some questions in my mind as to whether or not he should be cleared to play. . . .We’re not going to put a guy out on the field if there’s any doubt whatsoever when it comes to these kinds of injuries. Or any injuries."
Huddle Up: Fantasy owners should bench Bulger for the Week 14 game with the Bengals since backup QB Brock Berlin could see his first NFL start. Despite the favorable matchup with the Bengals subpar defense, no Rams quarterback is worth taking a chance on if you are in the playoff chase starting this week.
12/07/07
Updating earlier reports, Bulger was able to make it through a second consecutive practice on Thursday. While HC Scott Linehan would fully commit to saying Bulger was his starter this week in Cincinnati, he did say, "It looks very favorable."
Huddle Up: Expect Bulger to make the start in what should be a shootout against the Bengals. The only detriment to an offensive explosion would be the weather, and the current forecast calls for a high of 54 degrees with passing showers. If the rain holds off, or occurs at a minimum, feel confident in starting any Ram or Bengal you may have.
12/05/07
Updating an earlier report, St. Louis starting quarterback Marc Bulger passed his neuropsychological examination conducted on Tuesday and could play against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 14.
Huddle Up: With backup QB Gus Frerotte ailing due to a shoulder injury, Bulger could be a great lift to the St. Louis offense if he does not experience a setback this week leading up to the game. This game has all the makings of a shootout since both defenses can be exploited for big plays.
