2007 Outlook
Frye has played for the Browns for two years now and started 18 games. He played in 13 during 2006 and missed three games with a bone bruise in his wrist, returning just in time for the last game of the year. His first year as the unquestioned starter only resulted in 2454 passing yards with 10 touchdowns against 17 interceptions. As low as that sounds, realize too that he played in five games during his rookie season and had a 72 QB rating both years. Frye may not be entirely to blame since the Browns offensive line had injury problems and gave up 54 sacks last year to rank 30th in the NFL. But the Browns could not resist trading to get back into the first round last April so that they could select Brady Quinn with the 1.22 selection they got from Dallas.
Clearly the Browns want Quinn as the future franchise quarterback and it would not be that difficult to look good in comparison to Frye. It will be an open competition for the starting job in training camp according to HC Romeo Crennel and Frye will be the #1 entering August. If he will be the #1 entering September may be another story. This all plays out for great risk to rely on Frye this year (and maybe any future year at that) but chances are best he will start the year and at some point either surrender playing time to Brady if not the actual starting job.
Recent Priority News
10/16/08
The Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks QB Charlie Frye could start the team's Week 7 game if QB Seneca Wallace (calf) suffers a setback this week.
Huddle Up: Wallace was actually decent during a four-game starting stretch back in 2006, while Frye mustered all of 85 yards last week. When will Matt Hasselbeck be back again?
08/28/08
The Associated Press reports Seattle Seahawks backup QB Charlie Frye (knee) did not practice Wednesday, Aug. 27. He may be available for the team's final preseason game.
Huddle Up: Frye, who looked sharp in relief of the injured Matt Hasselbeck against the San Diego Chargers on Monday night, looks like the team will work him back slowly from his knee injury. Frye is battling Seneca Wallace for the backup role which could come down to the final game before a decision is made. Look for QB Seneca Wallace to get most of the work in the last preseason game. Quarterbacks Matt Hasselbeck and Charlie Frye are both expected to be ready to go when the regular season begins.
09/11/07
Cleveland has traded Week 1 starter Charlie Frye to the
Seattle Seahawks, reportedly for an undisclosed draft
choice.
Huddle Up: Talk about a free-fall. From the No. 1 guy one week to
buried on another team's roster as the No. 3
quarterback. This will probably pave the way for Brady
Quinn to start sooner or later, although it's still probable that Derek Anderson will start in Week 2 against the Bengals. But whether it's Quinn or Anderson, no
Browns quarterback is worth starting for your Fantasy
team.
09/03/07
To no one's surprise, Charlie Frye was named starting quarterback for the Browns for their week one match-up with the Steelers. Interestingly enough, HC Romeo Crennel would not say who the #2 is - Derek Anderson or rookie Brady Quinn.
Huddle Up: Expect this to be a weekly event with Crennel deciding who to start between the three players. Once Quinn gains the confidence of the coaching staff, that decision will stick but for now expect the quarterback situation to be unreliable in Cleveland from week to week.
08/31/07
According to an article in the Canton Repository,
Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel has made his
quarterback decision, and it's Charlie Frye.
Huddle Up: He's only keeping the seat warm for Brady Quinn, who
will be the man, and probably by the halfway point of the
season. Frye is a No. 3 Fantasy QB at best.
08/11/07
The Browns enter their first preseason game still without any clear starter for quarterback. HC Romeo Crennel said that he will literally flip a coin to see which one takes the field first between Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson.
"I think that's the fairest way because no one knows who's going to start ahead of time," said Crennel. "They'll both play the first half and alternate with the first team."
Huddle Up: While Brady Quinn has signed, he missed 11 critical days of training camp and is currently buried on the depth chart and not expect to see any significant action this week against the Chiefs. The season will open with either Frye or Anderson as the starter and every rep they take with the first team will help Crennel to decide who takes the field in week one. Either that or just another coin flip - this is a fantasy situation to avoid at all costs.
