2007 Outlook
Once Garcia left San Francisco after 2003, he had two very mediocre seasons in CLE and DET before landing in Philadelphia last year. Ends up that was a good move by the Eagles coaching staff since Donovan McNabb suffered yet another season ending injury and Garcia started six games. While he had one 312 yard effort, he only had two others around 240 yards and the remaining three were very low – 189, 140 and 164 yards. But he threw at least one score in each game and half his starts resulted in two or more touchdowns. The Eagles opted to let Garcia leave since his impressive play made him a more desirable commodity on the free agent market. The 37-year old Garcia signed a two-year deal with the Buccaneers for an undisclosed amount.
While Chris Simms was the starter in 2006 before getting injured, there’s no guarantee he returns in that role. Garcia and Simms will battle in training camp for the starting role. Simms would seem to have an upper hand since he is familiar with the offense, but the Bucs are impressed with how quickly Garcia picked it up in the spring. He has spent all his time either at the team’s training facility or at home studying. Garcia has to make up ground in order to beat out Simms but so far he’s been doing exactly that. Simms busiest year was 2005 when he started 10 games but only had 2035 yards and ten scores. Garcia just did that much in six games last year.
The reality here is that the winner of the starter role still likely won’t merit anything more than being a very deep fantasy back-up. If you wait far too long to grab your back-up quarterback, make certain of the situation here before taking either Simms or Garcia. And know that there’s no guarantee that either would play the entire season anyway.

The Associated Press reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia went 15-for-20 for 173 yards and one touchdown in the team's Week 6 game. Garcia has won his last five starts against the Carolina Panthers.
Huddle Up: The Tampa Bay offense was clicking on all cylinders in Week 6 with the return of Jeff Garcia as the starting quarterback. Garcia, completed 15 of 20 passes for 173 yards and 1 touchdown as the Bucs totally dominated a very good Carolina Panther team in a 27-3 victory. Garcia has already been named the starter for Tampa Bay in Week 7 and will make a nice starting option against the Seattle Seahawks if your quarterback is off on bye week.

The Tampa Tribune reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia is expected to start in the team's Week 6 game, replacing injured QB Brian Griese (shoulder, elbow).
Huddle Up: Garcia, who was benched just a few weeks ago and replaced by Brian Griese, will once again get a chance to lead the Tampa Bay offensive unit. Look for the veteran signal-caller to look to shine and prove his worth to the Bucs since he will likely be a free agent when the season ends. He should not be considered worthy of starting for fantasy teams in Week 6 against a solid Carolina defense.
09/12/08
ESPN.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Jon Gruden denied he has a strenuous relationship with QB Jeff Garcia (ankle). "We have a fine relationship,'' Gruden said. "He knows exactly where I'm coming from. I'll be happy to talk about the Falcons and what we have to do to win this game. Jeff will not start. I expect him to be active. Hopefully, he can get back here soon and play with the style that we all know and need around here."
Huddle Up: Maybe these two guys can sit down and talk this out instead of trading quotes to reporters. From a fantasy perspective it's tough to count on a Buc quarterback for the long term because of the volatility of the situation; Brian Griese will need to shake off his rust to prevent those holding Joey Galloway or Earnest Graham from hitting their own panic buttons.
09/11/08
Charlie Campbell, of PewterReport.com, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia (ankle) feels he could play this week, and it was head coach Jon Gruden's choice to keep him out. 'Ive played through a lot worse before and that is not anything new,' said Garcia. 'Everybody in this locker room is going to play through some nicks, some pain, and some sort of injury. That is just the way that this game is and I dont expect anything less. I feel like there are some things that I can definitely play through.' Garcia said he will be ready to go if called upon.
Huddle Up: Sounds like trouble in paradise. It seems that, for whatever reason, Garcia's been in Jon Gruden's doghouse for a while. He's definitely not being benched this week solely due to his ankle problem. Fair or not, the job is probably Brian Griese's to lose. If he plays well this week, look for Griese to start in Week 3 and beyond.
09/08/08
ESPN reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia is questionable for Week 2 with a sprained ankle.
Huddle Up: Garcia has already battled calf and pinkie finger injuries this preseason, but he posted a solid game in Week 1 playing through the injury and has a fantasy-friendly home date with the Falcons on the docket for Week 2.
09/08/08
ESPNews reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jeff Garcia (ankle) is questionable for the team's Week 2 game.
Huddle Up: Since a lot of Garcia's effectiveness comes from his mobility, any kind of ankle injury is troubling. Luke McCown will likely get the start for the Bucs against Atlanta if Garcia can't go.
