2007 Outlook
The patience of the Chicago coaching staff paid off last year when Rex Grossman finally remained healthy for the entire season and ended with 3193 yards and 23 touchdowns – only six quarterbacks had more passing scores. The Bears advanced to the Super Bowl so there is absolutely no question this year as to who the quarterback will be.
On the downside though, Grossman threw 20 interceptions which ranked third in the league behind only Kitna (22) and Roethlisberger (23). And he averaged 231 yards over the first 8 games but only managed 187 yards in the second half of the season (excluding week 17). Grossman started the season out on a hot streak with his first four games totaling eight touchdowns and averaging 265 yards per game with only three interceptions. But Grossman’s performance down the stretch diminished significantly, propped up only by 339 yard game he had against the Buccaneers in week 15. That was the only game in the final seven weeks where he topped 200 passing yards.
Grossman gets the benefit of playing one of the softest passing schedules in the NFL this year but with a dominating defense and what promises to be no less than adequate rushing game, his outlook remains only average this year. The addition of top rookie tight end Greg Olsen should help, but likely more in future years than in 2007. And his injury history did not haunt him in 2006 but cannot be ignored.
Recent Priority News
12/08/07
Updating an earlier report, QB Rex Grossman of the Chicago Bears suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee against the Washington Redskins but will not need to have surgery to repair the damage. An MRI performed on the quarterback revealed the extent of the damage which will sideline him for the remainder of the 2007 season.
Huddle Up: The season-ending injury to Grossman could take 3-4 weeks to heal and will open the door for backup QB Brian Griese to start for the remainder of the season. Grossman, the former first-rounder of the Bears, will become an unrestricted free agent on March 1st. It is unclear at the present time if Chicago will attempt to retain him or cut ties and move in another direction for the 2008 season.

Grossman was knocked out of the Washington game with a knee injury. When asked about the injury, and whether or not Grossman would be able to return the rest of the season, HC Lovie Smith said, "Don't know enough about it. You know, it didn't look good."
Huddle Up: When the head coach says something like that, you know Grossman is in trouble. Look for Brian Griese to take over the last three weeks of the season. He's worth a look next week, as the Bears play the Vikings' suspect pass D.
11/15/07
The Chicago Bears will once again turn to QB Rex Grossman to lead the offense when the Bears battle the Seahawks Sunday. Grossman, who was benched earlier in the season in favor of the now injured Brian Griese, was named the official starter by coach Lovie Smith for Week 11. "I'm trying to keep this job for the rest of the season, I think that's a given. I've already been benched, what are they going to do to me? I've been there and I don't want to go back," Grossman said.
Huddle Up: The benching of Grossman could actually be the best thing to happen to the talented QB since he will most likely play harder and strive to make better decisions the second time around. Fantasy owners should still take a wait and see approach to find out which Rex Grossman will show up on Sunday.
11/13/07
According to the Chicago Tribune, sources close to
Grossman say he's preparing under the assumption
that he's going to start Sunday against Seattle. Brian
Griese hurt his shoulder against the Raiders, possibly
opening the door for Grossman's return.
Huddle Up: Even if Grossman plays, he's way too inconsistent to be
relied upon. And in Seattle against that attacking
defense, Grossman is definitely not worth starting.
08/23/07
Chicago QB Rex Grossman, who looked like a world-beater at times and a goat at others, was once again the subject of preseason speculations. The Bears quarterback had several problems in the victory over the Indianpolis Colts in their preseason tilt earlier in the week. Grossman threw an interception, lost a fumble and had two botched exchanges with C Olin Kreutz. "With the snaps, that should never happen," said Grossman. "It just looks sloppy. It doesn't look sharp. I want to come out and look sharp in the game against the 49ers, continue the progress that I made and take that next step."
Huddle Up: It appears likely that Grossman will start the season in the same fashion as he ended last season and that is up and down. Fantasy football owners should look at the Bears signal caller as a No. 2 quarterback with some upside if he can keep the mistakes at a minimum.
08/21/07
The schizophrenic nature of Rex Grossman showed
itself yet again on Monday against the Colts. Numerous
flubs, namely fumbled snaps, marred his performance.
Grossman finished 9-of-11 but for only 59 yards. He
also threw an interception.
Huddle Up: Grossman has a tendency to suffer from brain cramps
way too often for most fantasy players' tastes. He can
look great, then horrible -- often in the same drive. Pick
him as a No. 3 QB and start him only if you absolutely
have to. The headaches just aren't worth it.
